On February 11th , Prep Baseball Report Oklahoma held its inaugural Preseason All-State Showcase, in Tulsa Oklahoma at the state of the art World Baseball Outreach indoor facility. An invite only roster of 50 players from around the state in the 2018-2020 classes attended the event while college coaches took note.
Player profiles have been updated with profile pictures, stats, and videos. In days to come, we will break down the event position-by-position. Today, we will take an in-depth look at the right-handed pitchers. Though many of the arms here are two-way players, they will be covered here as pitchers. Jordan Blom, NOAH Home School (2018)
A 6-foot, 175-pound lean and athletic frame. Works from a simple and controlled delivery, moderate leg-kick, and balanced finish. Full arm circle, some stiffness, high 3/4 slot. Fastball keeps is plane, 81-84 mph, above average command. Curveball shows 12/6 shape with rolling action, for strikes. Changeup flashes excellent fade, 76-77 mph. Cutter is thrown with full arm speed, true, late action, 80-81 mph. Slider sits 70-72 mph, 11/5 shape.
Gus Collins, Pryor HS (2019)
A 6-foot-3, 200-pound physically advanced sophomore with a strong lower half. Pitches from a slightly up-tempo wind up with rhythm and a violent finish. The arms circle is short with a quick change of direction in the back, comes through a high-3/4 window, fast out front. Fastball generally keeps its plane, flashes downhill tilt and life in the bottom of the zone, 80-83 mph. Slider shows late 11/5 shape, 74-75 mph. Curveball rolls, 70-72 mph, 12/6 shape with depth.
Jordan Compton, Carl Albert HS (2018)
A 5-foot-11, 170-pound lean athletic build with wiry strength. On the mounds, simple, up-tempo, smooth delivery, strides slightly closed. Arm circle is small in the back, 3/4 slot, very quick . Fastball shows consistent late sink and run, 82-85 mph, often in the bottom of the zone. Slurve has some depth, 11/5 shape, 66-70 mph. Changeup has late fade, 74-76 mph.
Wade Elliott, Deer Creek HS (2019)
A 6-foot-1, 215-pound frame packed with strength. Works from a deliberate wind-up, good lower half drive. Moderate arm circle, high-3/4 slot, quick out front. Fastball keeps its plane, 83-84 mph, well above average control. Changeup shows fade and sink with lots of depth, 73-78. Curveball rolls at times with 12/6 shape, 69-71 mph. Other times it shows a sharper 11/5 shape 72-73 mph.
Landon Grissom, Stonewall HS (2018)
A 6-foot, 164-pound lean frame with quick twitch athletic actions. Pitches from an average-tempo, max effort delivery with advanced leg drive down the mound. Quick to the plate out of the stretch. Arm stroke is long in the back, comes through a high-3/4 slot, fast, whippy, loose throughout. Fastball sits 86-88, slight late arm-side run. Slider is a put-away pitch, 74-76 mph, late 10/4 shape with depth, one of the best in the class. Curveball sits 73-74 mph, 11/5 shape, late, inconsistent. Changeup has consistent late arm-side run, 77-81 mph.
Morgan Grooms, Westville HS (2018)
A 6-foot-3, 165-pound frame with long limbs and plenty of room to add size and strength. Works from a simple, average-tempo delivery, closed-off finish. Arm circle is clean and loose, 3/4 slot. Fastball shows some run, 76-77 mph. Curveball has 11/5 shape, spins out at times, 59-61. Knuckball has downward action at 58-59 mph.
Dagan Hembree, Westville HS (2018)
A 5-foot-8, 160-pound average build with some strength. A submarine right-hander, Hembree works only from the stretch. A quick delivery with some violence. Throws from a knuckle scraping slot. Fastball sits 66-68 with sink and depth. Slider shows some East-to-West action, 59-60 mph.
Zachary Hoffman, Southmoore HS (2020)
A 5-foot-11, 150-pound frame with long arms and legs that will surely add both size and strength. Pitches from a controlled delivery with a short leg kick. Arm action has length in the back before coming through an over-the-top slot. Fastball sits 75-77 mph with downhill tilt. Curveball shows some late 12/6 action, 66-69 mph. Changeup was firm with some sink, 74-75 mph.
Evan Kowalski, Guthrie HS (2018)
A 6-foot-2, 207-pound broad shouldered, strong, durable frame. Pitches from a very smooth, average tempo delivery with excellent rhythm and below average effort. Uses a clean, fluid, uninterrupted arm circle, high-3/4 slot. Fastball sits 86-88 mph, downhill tilt, late run. Changeup is thrown with full arm speed, 77-79 mph, above average fade and depth. Slider ranges 72-78 mph, late break with depth, 11/5 shape. Kowalski shows exceptional command of all three pitches down in the zone.
Trevor Martin, Asher HS (2020)
A 6-foot-3, 200-pound athletic frame. Easily one of the most physically advanced freshman in the state. Uses a simple delivery, high leg kick, glides to the dish, lands slightly closed, spins to first base side on the finish. Full arm circle, drops the ball straight down out of the break, throws from a high-3/4, arm comes through with very little effort. Fastball sits 83-85 mph with tilt and late run when down in the zone. Changeup sits 76-79 with sink and depth. Curveball shows gradual break with 11/5 shape, 69-70 mph.
Blake McQuain, Dale HS (2018)
A 5-foot-10, 155-pound frame with some room to add strength. Pitches from an average-tempo delivery, well repeated. Arm circle is short with a quick change of direction in the back. Fastball show late arm-side run, 79-81 mph, well commanded. Cutter is thrown with full arm speed and has some late life, 73-75 mph. Slider shows 10/4 shape, 66-69 mph. Curveball rolls with 12/6 shape, 66-68 mph. Splitter has downward action, 67-68 mph.
Daniel Merrill, NOAH Home School (2019)
A 6-foot-5, 190-pound long limbed frame with wiry strength that will continue to fill out. Works from a simple, slightly up-tempo delivery. Arm action has a slight stab in the back, quick and loose, high-3/5 slot. Fastball has late arm-side run, 79-80 mph, has been up to 83 mph. Slider shows late 11/5 shape, with tight spin and late action, 70-72 mph. Changeup is thrown with full arm speed, sits 71-73 mph, consistent fade. Curveball has 12/6 shape with good depth, 66-68 mph. All four pitches are consistently in the zone.
Kyle Woods, Mound Saint Mary (2019)
A 6-foot, 165-pound frame with room to add size and strength. A very controlled delivery with very little effort that adds deception. Long arm stroke, over the top slot, some looseness in the arm, balanced finish. Fastball flashes some downhill action, 76-78 mph. Curveball rolls with 11/5 shape, 67-68 mph.
