No. 25 Zachary Defeats No. 17 Holy Cross 10-0

NEW ORLEANS–Monday marked the day teams across the state could play their first official contest of the 2017 season. Prep Baseball Report Louisiana headed to the campus of Holy Cross HS, the No. 17 preseason team, to see the Tigers host No. 25 Zachary.
2017 UTL Mickey Toscano, a Loyola commit, got the start on the mound for Holy Cross. A strong, athletic 6-foot-1 right-hander, Toscano ran his fastball up to 85 mph with late cutting action early, but struggled with command in his first outing of the young season.
A Preseason Power 25 club, Zachary made the Tigers pay for the free baserunners, ultimately bringing across eight runs in the first inning. The big blows came from 2017 OF Anthony Fidanza, a Holmes CC commit, as he sent a 3-1 fastball, with the bases loaded, into the left-center gap, bringing home three runs. The Broncos would load the bases again in the first inning and this time 2018 OF River Town sent another shot into the left-center gap for a three-run triple.
2017 RHP Robert Burke, a Northwestern State commit, had an 8-0 lead as he toed the rubber for the first time this spring, and it would be all the run support he needed. A strong, athletic 6-foot-4 right-hander, Burke showed a good fastball in his first outing, sitting 87-91 mph. Burke was efficient during his three-inning outing, striking out two batters, while only surrendering two hits and one walk.
Zachary would plate two more in the second inning, pushing the score 10-0, but that would be it for runs scored by either team on the day, as No. 25 Zachary took home their first win of the season against No. 17 Holy Cross in a five-inning mercy rule.
Offensively, Zachary was led by 2018 2B Rhett Hebert, as the scrappy infielder collected two hits atop the Bronco lineup. 2018 3B Joey Blanchard, 2019 C Alex Milazzo, 2017 1B Grant Quinn, and 2020 DH Keilon Brown would all collect one hit on the day.
2017 1B Trace Messina, a Loyola recruit, and 2018 OF Ashton Goldring, would collect the only two hits for Holy Cross on the day.
