JOLIET, IL – Limestone, led by the left arm of Bryce Meyer, shut out St. Viator 6-0 (6 innings) in the 3A third place game on Saturday morning. The third place game was on an hour and a half time limit to ensure the 3A state title game started on time, so six innings was all Limestone and St. Viator (25-17) could get in.
Meyer, a senior left-handed pitcher, twirled a six-inning shutout, yielding four hits and striking out five, leading Limestone to the 6-0 victory.
Limestone (31-8) broke the game open scoring four runs in the bottom of the third inning. James Welton led off the frame with a home run to right field. After four of the next five hitters reached base safely, Brady Boyd drove a two-run single up the middle, stretching the Limestone lead to 5-0.
Limestone would tack on one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Blake Marsh led off the inning with an infield single. Calvin Peacock came in to pinch run and later scored on a wild pitch, stretching the lead to the eventual final of 6-0.
2016 was Limestone’s first state trophy in baseball since 2006 and the first for St. Viator since 1965.
