Instant Analysis: Triton Scout Day

On Tuesday, the PBR Illinois staff made their way to River Grove, Ill., to host another JUCO Scout Day, this time at Triton JC. We’re sharing with you our rapid analysis gathered at this event, mixed with some data captured by TrackMan. Take a look at our Quick Hits analysis below for more insight.

POSITION PLAYERS

+ Entering his freshman eligibility season, MIF Bobby Wisz (Lemont, 2019) looks the part of as true of a hitter as you’re going to see. From the left side, he has a pure bat control swing with a mature middle-of-the-field approach. It’s short and quick to the baseball and translated well to his live at-bats, scorching two balls to each respective gap in consecutive ABs. Wisz showed some of the best bat speed on the team with an average of 71.7 mph, per Blast Motion, and an average peak hand speed of 23.0 mph. He’s a hitter who seems to see the ball well, with an innate understanding of the zone. A prototypical lead-off bat, Wisz started his day running a 6.85 in the 60-yard dash as well.

+ A bat that looks to be nestled into the middle of the Trojans lineup, right-handed-hitting catcher Matt Flaherty (Lake Zurich, 2020). Flaherty easily recorded the loudest rounds of batting practice, and the analytics supported just that. He’s a physical 6-foot, 220-pounder with an intentful pull side approach. He launched several balls over the left field fence including his longest of over 396’ per Trackman. Flaherty registered three of his 11 swings at over 100 mph exit velocity with a top of 103.6 at a launch angle of 25.6 for a 390’ home run. His strength showed behind the dish as well with an 80 mph arm out of the crouch resulting in his best pop time of 1.97.

+ Left/left outfielder Adam Pottinger (Deerfield, 2020) is another Trojan bat that looks the part of a top-of-the-lineup hitter. He’s a well-above-average runner (6.80) who looks more than capable of taking away doubles in either gap while playing center field, possessing an arm that could fit a right fielder’s profile as well (89 mph), with carry and accuracy. His hit profile is similar to that of Wisz, an up-the-middle approach that will yield line-drive hits and his footspeed is capable of helping him stretch singles into doubles.

+ INF Joe Selby (Romeoville, 2020) is a candidate to anchor the infield defense at shortstop. Selby plays with a smooth glove hand that works reliably in conjunction with his accurate arm. He’s a line-drive hitter who uses a simple, well-connected swing to stay on top of the baseball and work the middle of the diamond.

+ Brock Wilken (Harvest Christian, 2019) is a returning left/left first baseman who is still a freshman eligibility wise due to COVID. Wilken hit .429 in eight games last season, including two doubles and 11 RBIs. He’s likely another middle-of-the-order bat to pair with Flaherty, and he stands at 6-foot-5, 200 pounds himself. He’s an imposing figure who flashes some pull-side juice and offers some pitchability on the mound.

+ Brett Morrison (Watkins Memorial, OH, 2020) is a candidate to swap time with Wilken at first. Essentially, Morrison is the right/right version of the aforementioned Wilken. He features a similar swing though he showcased a little more pop; he struck one of the day’s best batted balls that came off the bat hot at 94.8 mph and travelled almost 360 feet. He, too, can pitch and he sat 82-84 mph on the bump.

+ Ben Hetelle (South Elgin, 2019) adds to the Trojans left-handed-hitting outfield. He’s a wiry, strong bat who averaged an 87.9 mph exit velocity in BP. A likely left field candidate, Hetelle was 6-for-19 to start off last season’s shortened campaign and had one of the best on-plane efficiency scores, according to Blast.

PITCHERS

+ Logan Strutz (Lockport, 2019) and Nick Brazelton (Oconomowoc, WI, 2019) are two of the Trojans’ top returners on the mound. Strutz is a 6-foot-4, 185-pound righty who can create some tilt on the baseball with a loose and easy arm action. Brazelton is also a right-handed arm who sits in the 83-85 mph range and showed the ability to pepper the bottom of the zone. He’s got three pitches for strikes and will likely compete for a rotation spot again for the Trojans. 

+ LHP Ryne Singsank (Elk Grove, 2019) is a transfer from Southern Illinois who stands an imposing 6-foot-7, 240-pounds. He sat comfortably at 85-87 mph with a running fastball and complements it with a sweeping slider that averaged 2,191 rpm.

+ RHP Ryan Vice (Lincoln-Way Central, 2018) possesses the biggest arm strength on this staff. We saw him up to 94 mph last fall and he looks like he’ll be back there again this spring. He topped at 91.2 mph in this session, but it's a lively four-seam fastball that, when he stays behind it, comes out of the hand with finish.

+ RHP Panos Rokkas (Fremd, 2020) showed the makings of a swing-and-miss breaking ball. His curveball plays at 67-69 mph but spun at an average of 2,666 rpm, topping at 2,791 rpm, both per TrackMan. He showed the ability to land it for strikes and pitch off of it with a running low-80s fastball.

+ RHP Dax Meyer (Willowbrook, 2020) is an intriguing low-spin arm who showed off a couple heavy sinking two-seamers that felt like the bottom just dropped out of them. He topped at 86 mph and pairs it with a splitter/slider combo.

+ RHP Ryan Linkletter (Johnsburg, 2019) did not give up an earned run in 5.2 innings last season while striking out five. He showed one of the better fastballs of the day, at 86-87 mph to go along with a sinking changeup and 11/5 curveball at 72-75 mph.
