LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - As we recently released our updated Class of 2020 state rankings we thought we'd provide you a closer look at a few of these prospects. Rankings are never easy and we certainly know they are not an exact science. Much of rankings is predicated on what our team of scouts have seen, but given the national scope of the Prep Baseball Report network, we are more than able to access a library of over 100,00 players nationwide to compare apples-to-apples.

It's a given that California is either 1 or 1a in terms of talent in any given year. There isn't that much debate as to who the top players are because they've generally been identified at a much younger age. After all, the top players are easily identified.

However, given the amount of games, innings, at-bats, and pitches our team has seen over the last two-to-three years of watching this class, we feel confident knowing that nobody in the industry has seen more players in addition to those easily identified from California than our collective team. 

And because of that level of confidence we feel our rankings best reflect the overall talent in the state.

THE PLAYERS

#2 KYLE HARRISON - DE LA SALLE - UCLA SIGNEE

As last summer went on, he got up to 94 mph and all the while maintained the touch, feel, and pitchability of his repertoire. Was more than solid in his starts this spring cementing himself as the top prep LHP in the state and possibly the country. 

#25 KYLE CARR - SAN MARCOS HS - SAN DIEGO SIGNEE

One of the fastest risers in draft discussions since last fall. Up to 93 this spring with an above average breaking ball. Also hits very well though his future is clearly on the mound. 

#28 RICKY TIEDEMANN - LAKEWOOD HS - SAN DIEGO STATE SIGNEE

Tiedemann has present mound presence, utilizes a high leg kick, hides the ball very well making it hard for hitters to pick up making his stuff play up a bit. Moves fastball around all quadrants of the zone, pounds right handed hitters inside.

#58 DREW DOWD - SERRA HS - STANFORD SIGNEE

Simple delivery from narrow start with high front knee and strong finish in extension down the mound; compact 3/4 arm with late quickness. Fastball shows life at the plate and excellent angle.

 

#67 RILEY COOPER - CLOVIS NORTH - ARIZONA SIGNEE

Stuff is crisp, goes in well vs right-handed hitters with the fastball (87-90 mph), hard curveball is one of the better ones in the 2020 class among left-handers.
