Freshmen Free Showcase: Catching Analysis

Jordon Banfield
Arizona Scouting Director

The Freshmen Free Showcase took place on December 10 at Sunrise Mountain HS in Peoria. This week we continue our positional analysis from the event with the catchers. As always contact [email protected] or direct message @PBRArizona on Twitter with any questions and/or information.

Zach Kress takes home the top spot on the list after a truly impressive defensive performance, posting the top pop time at the event and showing impressive flexibility and advanced receiving ability. Steven Stewart also stood out as a guy to dream on in the future with a projectable body that has a chance to hit. Tyler Dorsch's athleticism, Zac Rasmussen's skill level and Austin Thomason's physicality also stood out and are worthy of mention.

Zach Kress C / 2B / Corona Del Sol, AZ / 2021

Easily the top defender on the day at catcher, with a very quick transfer and elite accuracy on his throws to 2B. Kress posted a top pop time of 2.01 with 70 mph velocity and also excelled as a receiver, showing quiet hands and good flexibility.

Steven Stewart C / 3B / Centennial, AZ / 2021

Very projectable 6-foot, 135-pound frame with a high waist and long limbs. At first glance he looks more like a SS or CF, but is very comfortable behind the plate and has a loose swing with loft that projects for at least gap power as his body fills out. 2.13 best pop time.
