Eastern KY College Prospect Showcase: Pitcher Analysis

By Chris Fuller
Kentucky Scouting Director

We traveled to the University of the Cumberlands for the first time on Tuesday, August 4 for the Eastern Kentucky College Prospect Showcase. The event afforded players the opportunity to showcase their abilities to the PBR Kentucky staff and college coaches in attendance. While it was a smaller event, there were certainly some players who stood out, including a few Class of 2018 players who have potential to be high-level prospects.

The following is a look at the pitchers from the event. This is pitcher analysis only. Those players who also participated as a position player at the event had that evaluation featured in a previous article.

Top statistical performers and complete stats were posted following the event. CLICK HERE to view that information.

Trae Harmon, RHP/3B, Somerset HS, 2018
6-foot-3, 225-pound RHP works through a ¾ to high-3/4 arm slot with long arm action, has regular effort in delivery, shows premium velocity for his age, fastball sat 86-87 mph touching 89 on his final pitch of the day, showed a 69-70 mph curveball with short 11/5 action and likes to drop arm slot slightly on 69-71 mph slider with short lateral action, tends to slow arm on 65-70 mph changeup that was erratic and needs further development. Harmon established himself as one of the top arms in Kentucky’s 2018 class at the event.

Tyler Morris, RHP, Raceland Worthington HS, 2016
6-foot-3, 185-pound RHP, frame projects well at the next level, works through a ¾ arm slot with long arm action, regular effort in delivery, fastball sat 84-85 mph with the two-seam fastball showing good arm-side run and sink, 70-72 mph curveball shows 11/5 action and tended to be up in the zone, showed better command of 68-71 mph slider with sweeping break, good feel for a solid 74-75 mph changeup thrown with good arm action with good arm-side life, arm works cleanly and has potential for more velocity heading to the next level.

Brandon Pingleton, RHP/SS, Garrard County HS, 2017
6-foot-1, 165-pound RHP works through a high-3/4 arm slot with a quick arm, arm is loose with clean arm action, regular effort in delivery, fastball sat 82-83 mph with some late sinking action, locates the fastball consistently at the bottom of the strike zone, curveball shows short 11/5 action at 66-70 mph, has a tendency to get around the 70-73 mph changeup at times with some cutting action. Pingleton’s arm is quick and is an interesting mound prospect, especially with continued development of secondary pitches.

Kyle Kelsey, RHP, Madison Central HS, 2016
6-foot-1, 175-pound RHP works through a high-3/4 arm slot with long arm action, regular effort in delivery, shows good pitchability, fastball sat 79-80 mph topping at 81 with good arm-side run, showed a 66-68 mph curveball that he locates down well with 11/5 action, changeup is a plus offering thrown with good arm action at 71-73 mph with excellent sink and fade. Kelsey has an advanced changeup for a high school pitcher and works both sides of the plate well.

Seth Hill, RHP, Knox Central HS, 2017
5-foot-10, 165-pound RHP works through a ¾ to high-3/4 arm slot with long arm action and easy effort in delivery, good rhythm and throws strikes with all pitches, fastball sat 77-80 mph topping at 81 with some occasional arm-side run, shows good feel for his 65-68 mph curveball that he locates consistently at the bottom of the strike zone with solid 11/5 action, throws a 69-71 mph changeup with good arm action that has good sinking action. Hill shows good overall pitchability and feel on the mound.

Hagan Elmore, OF/RHP, Pulaski County HS, 2018
6-foot-2, 165-pound RHP with projectable frame, works through a high-3/4 arm slot with long arm action, deliberate delivery with minimal effort, fastball sat 76-77 mph topping at 78 with some arm-side run, showed some feel for his 62-65 mph curveball that varied between gradual 11/5 and 12/6 action, changeup is solid with some sink and fading action at 65-67 mph, throws the changeup consistently for strikes, a 2018 prospect to keep an eye on.

Devin Ecklar, RHP/3B, Madison Central HS, 2019
6-foot-1, 155-pound RHP with lanky frame, works through a high-3/4 arm slot with medium backside arm action, minimal effort in delivery, above average velocity for age, fastball sat 75-77 mph and is straight, showed limited feel for 65-68 mph curveball that varied between gradual 11/5 action and short lateral action, changeup is best present secondary pitch with good sinking action at 67-69 mph. With a combination of projectable frame and clean arm action, Ecklar should have no problem gaining velocity moving forward.

Tyler Dean, OF/RHP, Trinity HS, 2016
5-foot-9, 180-pound RHP works through a high-3/4 arm slot with shorter arm action and regular effort, fastball sat 73-76 mph and is mostly straight, tends to get under 60-62 mph curveball leaving up with minimal action, changeup is best secondary pitch at 65-68 mph with some fading action and he shows good feel for it, also showed a 57 mph knuckleball.

Landon Adams, C/RHP, Raceland Worthington HS, 2016
6-foot-1, 175-pound RHP works through a high-3/4 arm slot with shorter arm action, fastball is straight and sat 71-73 mph, showed limited feel for 61-63 mph curveball with gradual 11/5 action, solid 66-69 mph changeup with some fade thrown consistently for strikes.
