Commitment Analysis: LaVale Hodges

Now that we are getting closer to the second Wednesday of November and the early signing period for the class of 2016, PBR Maryland will begin breaking down player commitments across the state.

With this edition of the 2016 class we turn to LaVale Hodges, the No. 21 player in the PBR Maryland State Rankings. The outfielder played a key role for Archbishop Spalding in their MIAA championship last year, being a dynamic bat in the middle of the order providing a power presence with speed for the Cavaliers. Spalding will look to repeat as MIAA champs this season with Hodges being one of the many talented seniors on the roster. Hodges will spend his college career playing for coach Kenny Thomas at D-II power USC-Aiken.

Scouting Report

Solid frame at 6-foot 200-pounds. Has a short and quick arm action from the outfield throwing from a high ¾ arm angle. Throws have carry on them at 84 mph. Fluid footwork and plays thru the ball. Gets rid of the ball quickly. Hits from a balanced setup with a short stride. Short path with fast bat speed. Front hip leaks at times. Gap-to-gap hitting style with pull side power. Room to grow with the prospect. Was a 4.44 home to first and exit velocity of 91 mph.

Outlook

Hodges will be an athletic addition to the Aiken roster and should make an impact immediately into his freshmen year. His 6.85 60-yard dash and power potential at the plate should translate well to his future team. Still untapped potential in the player and looks to be a middle of the order bat with the ability to steal bases before his career is over.
