Chicagoland Open: Statistical Analysis
August 24, 2021
On Sunday, August 22, the PBR Illinois scouting staff hosted the ninth annual Chicagoland Open at Triton College in River Grove, IL. Roughly 80+ prospects attended and provided our staff with an up-to-date look at their particular skill-sets or, for some, a first glance at the talents they bring to the baseball field.
Yesterday our scouting staff collaborated to provide you with our Quick Hits piece, highlighting several standout performances of the day. Today, we'll start our dive into the data side of things by looking at those who topped our traditional leaderboards from Sunday's showcases.
We'll also roll our TrackMan Files and Blast Motion Board pieces as the week rolls on, looking at players that stood out from a deeper, more analytically driven perspective later today.
For now, read below as we highlight the statistical leaders from Sunday.
+ OF Scott Newman (Glenbrook South, 2022) was one of the top performers Sunday. The 6-foot-1, 160 pound left-handed hitting outfielder got his day started with a 6.82 in the 60-yard dash and followed that up with a 96 mph max exit velocity in BP. He also uncorked amongst the hardest throws to home from the outfield, reaching back for an 86 mph bullet.
+ C Joseph Perona (Lane Tech, 2022) was one of four multi-positional players at our showcase, taking reps in the outfield and behind the plate. Last seen at our Class of 2022 Showcase back in October. Perona showed improvements in exit velocity and arm velocity from behind the plate. He ran a 6.86 in the 60-yard dash, led our catching crop in max catcher velocity (79 mph), and also finished towards the leaders in max outfield velocity, too.
+ OF Luke Leombruni (Boylan Catholic, 2022) ran the fastest 60-yard dash of the day, blazing his way to a 6.64 time on our lasers. He was also in the upper-tier of max exit velocities from the event, barreling one up at 94 mph in BP.
+ Four different outfielders recorded an 87+ mph high from the outfield, headlined by Von Steuben's OF Anthony Huerta (2022). The 5-foot-8, 165-pound Huerta utilized his wiry arm strength to reach back for an 88 max bullet to home. Huerta was also up to 84 mph on the mound.
+ In his first PBR showcase, RHP Tyler Haines (Burlington Central, 2022) made a big impression. The 5-foot-11, 160-pound, right-handed pitcher was the top pitcher Sunday and was the only pitcher to hit above 90 mph on the mound. It was a highly-intriguing initial look at one of the liveliest arms still available in the class.
