Central Florida The College Destination For Shannon
NORTH LIMA - There were four offers for baseball and another four offers for football.
After weighing out all the choices, Brady Shannon - who also plays basketball in high school - found what he was looking for at a destination far from his home in North Lima, just south of Youngstown.
The three-sport standout at Youngstown Ursuline will be playing baseball at Central Florida.
“They reached out last June,” Shannon reflected. “They saw film of me through a Release Showcase and saw my stats at the Future Games (Shannon was the MVP for Team Ohio vs. Team New Jersey). Through PBR and Release, they saw live footage of me.
“After that I built a great relationship with the staff. We were texting weekly. We definitely communicated a lot in the fall.”
Choosing between two sports added to the arduous situation.
“It was difficult, I love football, too, and I’m going to keep playing it in high school,” Shannon explained. “But I’ve always loved baseball, that’s been my dream.”
It is a dream now realized for the second-rated 2022 outfielder in Ohio, who will be playing at the American Athletic Conference university in Orange County, Fla.
“They gave me the best opportunity to thrive at their school,” summarized Shannon. “I want to play in the south and they’re giving me an opportunity to play at a great baseball school. I like their coaching staff and I like the campus (Shannon went on a virtual tour).”
Admittedly, not being able to personally visit the university made selecting a future home difficult.
“It was tough, but I made the best of it,” Shannon noted in reference to the limitations in place due to the coronavirus restrictions in recruiting. “I feel I saw enough. I like what I was seeing over the screen and what they have to offer me.”
It was the same for Central Florida when it came to the recruitment of Shannon through films and live-streaming rather than seeing him in person.
“They like my strength at the plate and that I use all the field with my power,” the 6-3 212-pounder said about UCF. “They also like my athleticism in the outfield. I’m a big corner guy with a middle-of-the-order bat. They feel I can be good for their program.”
A quarterback in football and a shortstop and center fielder on the Ursuline baseball team, the recruitment of the 11th-ranked junior in the state began to soar in 2020.
“It blew up out of nowhere this past summer,” Shannon reflected. “I’m grateful to have so many schools reach out. It was stressful, but overall I enjoyed it. I’m so grateful to the schools that I talked to and I enjoyed learning about their programs and connecting with the coaches.”
A 3.81 student still undecided on a college major, Shannon had advice for others after going through the strenuous recruiting process.
“Build as many relations as you can,” explained Shannon, whose top schools in addition to Central Florida were Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. “Don’t single out one school right away. Be patient and don’t worry about how you’re playing and who is watching.”
When it all officially came to an end, Shannon admitted to a feeling of comfort.
“It was really exciting and also relieving to finally know that I’m going to a school that I’m in love with,” Shannon said. “I feel blessed.”
While thrilled to have a college home determined, the work is far from over for Shannon.
“I need to continue to work on improving my game,” Shannon related. “I need to get better with my speed and agility from a defensive aspect and keep my body 100 percent. I just want to get better all-around.”
