Bay Area World Series (CA): Uncmtd 2021 LHP's

New Episode LIVE now! - At The Yard Podcast
Lathrop, CA - Bay Area World Series (est. 2004) has seen its fair share of outstanding players over the years (38 MLB players and over 800 D1 players, including Stephen Piscotty, Marcus Semien, LHP Kris Bubic, LHP Robbie Erlin, Joc Pederson, Mitch Haniger, JD Davis, Max Stassi, etc.) and many are/were committed by the early signing period or much earlier in the process. Its no secret that Northern California is and has long been one of the nation's most fertile regions for talent.
As is the case all over, kids are always getting better, some later bloomers, some are a bit underexposed, even in California. Sometimes it just takes the right eyes on a player to give them that nudge toward colleges looking for one more potentially impact-type talent for their next incoming class. Maybe not necessarily even an impact talent, rather, adding quality depth to an incoming class, which ultimately, can be more important as injuries and attrition take place over a college career.
These uncommitted LHPs all threw in the games portion of BAWS 2020 (September 5-7). Videos from the games are in the editing process, though some have video from a BAWS bullpen or from a previous PBR event. Stats, both traditional mph and now Trackman data are all in the player profiles. The reports are a brief look at the standout qualities for these pitchers, listed alphabetically.
William Gnibus LHP / Bellarmine College Prep, CA / 20216-foot-1, 194-pounds; Big physical body type that immediately draws positive attn; then the raw stuff shows up, w/FB up to 86, sitting steadily in mid-80s. Didn't see CB from him but mixed in a few CHGs. The potential to get into upper-80s that's the main attraction. |
Cristian Machado LHP / Heritage, CA / 20215-foot-11, 190-pounds; Have seen multiple times in HS action, including outstanding performances in NCS playoff games, understands/trusts stuff, the raw velo was down in this look (could be lack of summer reps), but still showed pitchability w/full repertoire. Will look forward to seeing him at full strength in 2021. |
Syler Pillsbury LHP / Minarets , CA / 20215-foot-10, 165-pounds; There is a lot to like in regard to his arm speed and how aggressively he throws the baseball. Athletic delivery though it wasn't consistently in sync to allow for strike throwing. The spin rates and life on the pitches are also positives for projection. He's also very athletic, FB peaked at 83 mph. |
Ryan Shimabukuro LHP / Saint Marys College, CA / 20216-foot-0, 160-pounds; At first glance, the traditional metrics (mph) don't grab attention, but a look further and the 2431 max spin on the FB (T78), as a lean body LHP who is a ways from physical maturity, that spin paints a more full future picture. The arm works well too. Flashed feel for the CB, CHG, & SL. |
Carson Szeder LHP / Whitney, CA / 2021 |
Sam Winkles LHP / Acalanes , CA / 20216-foot-2, 170-pounds; Have seen him mix three pitches (CB/CHG) in multiple viewings during HS season and now the velocity is climbing, up to 84 in his outing, which again, showed his ability to 'pitch' and trust his stuff because of his plus feel for the zone. One of the better pitchers in the region among uncommitteds. |

5-foot-10, 190-pounds; Strong compact body type, has plenty of arm quickness and showed ability to get quality spin on the FB (max 2284, T81). CB flashed quick change of direction, aggressive thrower though feel for the zone was somewhat elusive for him in this outing.
