This Sunday marks the 15th annual Super 60 showcase hosted by Prep Baseball Report. The event has become the most heavily scouted preseason event for potential draft picks in the Midwest. The primary purpose of the Super 60 is to give professional area scouts and crosscheckers a head start on the high school season.
Illinois Super 60 History
Last season Illinois had 12 players at the Super 60, including each of the top ten ranked players in Illinois. Seven players from the event were taken in the MLB Draft. Cooper Johnson (28th Round, Reds), Tyler Fitzgerald ( 30th round, Red Sox), Ben Brecht (36th Round, Orioles), Brenden Heiss (31st Round, Cubs), Jack Suwinski (15th Round, Padres), Jordan McFarland (36th Round, Nationals), and Sam Ferri (38th Round, Yankees) were all drafted last year with only Suwinski foregoing his college commitment to sign with the Padres.
The 2013 Super 60 showcase had a pair of Illinois first round picks in 2016 with Corey Ray going 5th overall to the Milwaukee Brewers and Zack Burdi going 26th overall to the Chicago White Sox.
2017 Illinois Super 60 Participants
This year Illinois brings the No. 1, No. 3, and No. 4 ranked players in the state who all happen to be pitchers. No. 1 ranked Austin Marozas will impress before he even throws a pitch standing at 6-foot-7 and 240-pounds, the right hander possess a solid three pitch offering highlighted by a fastball that has sinking action and tops out at 91 mph.
No. 3 ranked Bobby Miller will be looking to turn some heads on Sunday, when his mechanics are in sync he flashes premium stuff that will have him climb draft boards this coming spring. Miller, a Louisville commit, has been up to 93 mph in the past with reports of him reaching even higher. At 6-foot-5, 190-pounds the highly athletic righty is poised for a big Super 60 performance.
Reid Detmers currently sits at No. 4 in the PBR Illinois rankings. This past summer Detmers made the 18U USA Baseball 40 man roster and pitched well at both TOS and the ensuing team trials. He is a high pitchability lefty with swing and miss stuff.
Some sleepers from Illinois are RHP Glenn Albanese and RHP Marius Balandis, who recently moved to the states from Lithuania.
