PA Director of Scouting
Session One of the Winter College Prospect Showcase took place on December 12 a Keystone State Baseball Academy in Manheim, PA. Session Two will follow the same format and will showcase a new round of prospects on January 16.
Today we begin our analysis of the prospects in attendance by reviewing the Class of 2019. CLICK HERE to view complete results for all prospects in attendance.
Hunter Johns, LHP, Ephrata HS
6-foot, 130-pound lefty sat 71-73 from an easy, fluid high 3/4 arm slot. The lanky freshman displayed sound mechanics with a high knee stack and pounded the strike zone during the duration of his bullpen session. Johns' curveball sat 56-57 with 1/7 rotation and should develop as he gains the confidence to throw the pitch at fastball arm speed. He also showed solid feel for his 66 mph changeup thrown at near fastball arm speed. Johns is a solid follow in this class that will likely see significant velocity gains over the course of his four years of high school.
Cameron Barto, SS/OF, Lancaster Catholic HS
5-foot-11, 140-pound freshman displayed improved measurables across the board since we last saw him 11 months ago. The switch-hitter displayed above average abilities from both sides of the plate with a top bat exit velocity of 83 mph from the right side. He flashed a shorter, more compact stroke from the right side but in spite of some length to his left hand swing Barto does show some gap-power potential. The primary infielder showcased an 80 mph arm from the outfield and athletic actions at shortstop with the ability to play through the baseball. The 7.08 runner flashed a soft glove hand and solid feet while making throws from multiple arm angles.
Shaun Fedor, 3B, Manheim Township HS
5-foot-8, 165-pound right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and utilizes a short stride to initiate his swing. Some arm bar created by a deep load leads to some length in his swing but Fedor displayed the ability to barrel the baseball routinely when his front foot was on time. The solidly built freshman registered a bat exit velocity of 75 mph. Fedor will need to continue to work on his footwork (8.07 60-yard dash) and arm strength (67 mph) at the hot corner. Continued strength gains and physical maturity will benefit Fedor's all-around game moving forward.
Adam Maring, SS, Shippensburg Area HS
5-foot-8, 140-pound right-handed hitter takes a cut reminiscent of a cleanup hitter. Maring starts from a slightly open stance and utilizes a heel raise stride to initiate his swing. The freshman stays behind the baseball well and works hard to fully engage his lower half and stay through the baseball with a bat exit velocity of 83 mph. Maring ran a 7.43 60-yard dash and flashed an accurate 76 mph arm across the diamond. He shows a quick release and the ability to play through the baseball. Maring would benefit by working to field the baseball further in front to allow his soft hands to work freely.
CJ Saylor, C, Hempfield HS
5-foot-9, 185-pound catcher with physical build flashed above average foot speed for the position (7.15 60-yard dash). The freshman flashed a solid set up with sound catch and throw techniques. Saylor displayed quick feet, a clean transition and an accurate throwing arm with pop times of 2.12-2.22 on throws of 74 mph from the crouch. Work to eliminate a small hitch in his arm motion would lead to an immediate improvement in pop times. Saylor starts his right-handed swing from a square stance with a high hands load. He initiates his swing with a toe tap stride and struggles to be on time to the hitting zone with regularity due to a significant armbar.
