Team Select Game 2 Recap
August 3, 2019
Team Select were back in action at the 2019 PBR Future Games at LakePoint on Friday afternoon against Team Arizona. The team as a whole was able to generate more offense than their first game, but fell just short, losing 6-5. Without a doubt the top performers of the game were 2021 RHP Blake McGehee (Tioga, LA) and 2022 RHP Alex Stanwich (Lincoln-Way East, IL).
McGehee got the start on the bump for Team Select and was absolutely lights out. The 6-foot, 170-pound right-hander turned in the most efficient outing of the 2019 Future Games as he worked a perfect two innings in what felt like less than five total minutes. His fastball got on the plate in a hurry as it jumped out of the hand to the bottom of the zone. He threw strike after strike to both sides of the plate at 86-89, and there is likely more in the tank. Remaining compact throughout an uptempo, polished delivery, McGehee was able to find a consistent high ¾ arm slot throughout. His breaking ball backed up at times at 72-73, but it was thrown for a strike and played well of the fastball. He also showcased a 74mph changeup with fade that he showed comfort in throwing. Given his efficiency as a strike-thrower with three pitches, McGehee has a strong chance of continuing as a starter moving forward.

Stanwich put in one inning of work to close the game in the 7th that was nothing short of electric, just dominating the Team Arizona lineup as he struck out the side. The 6-foot-1, 185- pounder is a physical and athletic freak, as evidenced by his outrageous positional statistics on the workout day: 6.82 (60), 93 mph (outfield velo), 106 (exit velo). On Friday, it was his time to shine on the mound and he did just that. Stanwich does a nice job utilizing the strength in his frame and ultra quick arm speed to pitch downhill, creating difficult angles. He pounded the zone with his fastball to the tune of 86-87, touching 88 mph twice (2250-2400rpm). With Team Arizona trying to hunt fastball, he went to his curveball effectively at-times, a 12/6 breaker at 69-71 (2300-2400).

Sandwiched in between McGehee and Stanwich were 2021 RHP Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman(Riverside, VA) and 2021 LHP Josh Fischer (Hopkinton, MA). Lunsford-Shenkman is a big and physical 6-foot-3, 225-pounds, with room for more growth. A high upside prospect, he showed an interesting mix of three pitches. The fastball sat 87-89 and got up on batter in a hurry. He also offered up an 11/5 curveball with depth at 71-74 and had feel for a 79 mph changeup.
Lots to like about the power-arm on ‘21 RHP Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman (@PBRVirginiaDC). Big 6’3” 225 frame. Fastball getting on plate @ 87-89. 11/5 CB w/ depth at 71-74. Has also shown interesting chng at 79 for strikes to RHH. Lots to like. #PBRFutureGames pic.twitter.com/WAbvRf5atS

Fischer offered up a different look as he relied heavily on movement and command to work through Team Arizona. Using a fastball and slider combination he effectively tossed a high volume of strikes, allowing him to play around the edges of the plate and get batters to chase. The fastball sat 79-83 with run, and his calling card, his slider, played with late action, getting numerous swings and misses at 72-74 (2300-2500rpm).

Offensively, 2021 3B Jake Cooper (State College, PA) put together a number of quality at-bats as he collected two singles on the day. At 5-foot-11, 195-pounds Cooper carries strength throughout his frame. A solid approach at the plate and good hand-eye coordination, Cooper used more barrel control than power in his swing to find holes in the defense.

2021 OF Adam Moser (Fairview, CO) possesses premium bat speed at the plate, looking to elevate the ball from gap-to-gap. A high-end athlete, Moser stands 6-foot-1, 190-pounds with quick-twitch muscle throughout. With an athletic setup in the box, he gains extension through the zone and is able to drive the ball with ease. He has consistently found the barrel in his first two games this weekend, with only one hit to show for it.

To say 2022 OF Stone Blanton (Madison Ridgeland Academy, MS) is physical would be quite the understatement. The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder is built like an NFL tight end with a broad set of shoulders and an immense amount of raw strength throughout. At the plate he has quick hands and hits everything hard with his power bat. Presently a gap-to-gap type hitter, Blanton has the chance to put up huge offense numbers with improved launch angles and a pull approach.
#TeamSelect ‘22 OF Stone Blanton (@MRABaseball; @PBR_Mississippi) is as physical as they come at 6-3, 215-pounds. Generates hard contact with a power bat. Hits a hard grounder thru the 6-hole for a single. #PBRFutureGamespic.twitter.com/Fvm19UqDo7

The lone international member of Team Select, hailing from Calgary, AB, 2021 OF Jackson Clemett(Vauxhall, AB) put together a solid 2-for-3 afternoon, notching two singles. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound left-handed hitter is just beginning to realize his physical potential. His type of frame will continue to grow and make gains. Clemett has displayed a smooth swing, good barrel control and a keen eye.
