Scouting Report
3/30/17 In an early season look at Stoner weather conditions hovered in the low 40s with a steady rain. The 6-foot, 170-pound righty still had good stuff sitting 89-91 early before settling in at 87-89 for the majority of his 5.2 innings. Showed solid command in bad conditions that got steadily worse with 13 strikeouts against two walks. Slider sat in the low 80s and changeup was 80-82.
2/5/17 PBR Super 60 Pro Showcase Participant
Stoner showcased his long, clean arm action while commanding a pair of breaking balls. Out of a high three-quarter slot, he pounded the bottom of the zone with a fastball that sat 88-90. Fastball and 83 mph changeup showed hard fading action while both breaking balls sat in the upper 70s. Curveball has 11/5 tilt at 79 mph while slider is more flat and touched 81. Plenty of room for development in his 6-foot, 170-pound frame. Arm action is quick and much of his velocity comes from solid leg drive.
8/19/16 Stoner was the top pitcher of the tournament, as the projectable 6-foot, 170-pound righty sports a long, clean arm action with an ability to spin his breaking ball. Out of a high three-quarter slot, he pounded the bottom of the zone early in his outing with a fastball that sat 86-89, touching 90 and settling in the mid-80s by the fifth inning. Secondary stuff includes a sharp, mid-70s curveball with 11/5 tilt and the occasional mid-70s change-up with sink. He struck out eleven in six innings, allowing two walks and four singles. The athletic right-handed hitter also went 3-8 with one double, three walks, and a hit-by-pitch.
7/20/16 6-foot, 170-pound Bloomsburg commit continues his upward trajectory. Super-athletic delivery with long, loose arm action. Collects himself over the rubber well and maintains direction to home plate. Fastball sat 88-91 with occasional biting armside run and he pitched to the bottom of the zone well. An upper-70s curveball acted more like a hard slider as he tended to get around the pitch on this day. Didn't feature his upper-70s change-up much, but it too has a chance to be a quality pitch for him.
Right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and strides to square. Has good bat speed and consistently barreled the baseball during his BP round. Battled well are rarely swung and missed during game play. Showed an ability to get inside a fastball on the inner part of the plate, as well as the ability to square up a pitch down in the zone. Recorded an 87 mph exit velocity and ran a 4.39 home-to-1B time.
6.4.16 - Bloomsburg commit 2017 Nick Stoner has a quick loose arm action on the mound with a fastball that got up to 89 mph that worked downhill with some arm side run. Showed a hard breaking ball that he uses as put away pitch to compliment his aggressive fastball. At the plate, Stoner showed some bat sped at the plate from a slightly open stance. Hands worked well at the plate
4/6/16 6-foot, 170-pound righty sat 86-87 early on touching 89 mph from a high 3/4 arm slot. Bloomsburg commit's fastball showed late life with occasional arm side run. 11/5 breaking curveball has two-plane break at 73-75 and was utilized as primary out pitch (11 Ks in 6 innings). Stoner flashed an occasional changeup at 77-79 with excellent arm speed and late sink. Command issues (5 BB, HBP) come from a deliberate delivery that includes a hitch from the point he reaches the stack position. Solid, long limbed frame should continue to fill out with maturity.
7/21/15-7/22-15
+ 6-foot, 160-pound right-handed hitter. Started from slightly open stance and strode to square. Inside-out stroke with hands in toward body; wore out right-center during BP. Ran a 7.00 60-yard dash and 4.44 in-game home-to-1B time. Showcased 82-mph exit velocity and 86-mph arm strength during workout. Solid defensive actions and fields the ball out front.
+ Loose, athletic delivery with a bounce at the top of his balance point. Pitched out of a high three-quarter slot with long, clean arm action and good extension on release. In first outing in over three months, fastball sat 84-86. Curveball at 71-72 had nice 11/5 shape in warm-ups, although less depth in game. Also mixed in a change-up at 73-74. Athleticism, immature frame, and arm action portend plenty more to come here.
11/1/14 Stoner ran the second fastest 60-yard dash of the day at 6.81, while showing good feet and hands on defense, and an 82-mph arm across the diamond. At the plate, the right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and stays inside the ball well. His hands work and he posted an 81-mph exit velocity. The 6-foot, 155-pounder sat 84-85 out of a high-3/4 slot with a long, loose arm stroke and a fluid, repeatable delivery. Stoner's 72-mph curveball showed biting 11/5 rotation with some two-plane break. His split-change sat 72-74 with some late down action, but his ability to apply the grip will need to improve in order to not tip the pitch.
