Fall Kickoff Showcase Tournament Review: Team PBR Red

The Fall Kickoff Showcase Tournament on August 17-19 brought together six travel teams from across the state as well as a pair of teams constructed by Prep Baseball Report with prospects not on one of the six travel teams. Today we take a look at those prospects that played for Team PBR Red.

Team PBR RED
Ryan Basarab RHP / 1B / West Chester East, PA / 2020Rankings StateRank: 53 / POS: 13
6-foot-5, 195-pound righty sat 81-84 while touching 86 mph from a high 3/4 to over-the-top arm slot in rainy conditions. Basarab commanded the zone well with a three pitch mix working three hitless innings while striking out four. His curveball at 72-73 showed tight 12/6 rotation and got plenty of swinging strikes. The changeup at 74-75 was thrown with good sell as an effective third pitch. Basarab repeats his delivery well and showed the ability to get downhill creating tilt to the plate.

Drew Bechtold C / 2B / Donegal , PA / 2020Rankings StateRank: 71 / POS: 15
5-foot-10, 150-pound backstop impressed with his work behind the plate, throwing out several runners attempting to steal in game action with a top in-game pop time of 2.04. Quiet receiver blocks well and commands the game. The right-handed hitter went 1-for-5 with an RBI during tournament play.

Collin Beech 1B / LHP / Warwick, PA / 20206-foot-2, 245-pound left-handed hitter starts from an open stance and utilizes a lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing. Demonstrated a solid feel for the barrel in batting practice with a bat exit velocity of 78 mph. Also displayed an ability to drive the ball to the opposite field as evidenced by an in-game double to left-center field. Moves well around the bag at first base and showed confidence in his glove hand with accurate 77 mph arm strength across the diamond. Sat 74-76 out of a 3/4 arm slot with some backwards lean to his upper half in the stack position. Also displayed a curveball with 1/7 rotation at 61-62. |
Khaleil Blanding 2B / OF / Muhlenberg, PA / 2020Rankings StateRank: 99 / POS: 1
5-foot-9, 175-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a heel-raise stride. Showcased a solid feel for the barrel in batting practice with an 81 mph bat exit velocity. Ran a 7.71 60-yard dash and displayed the ability to handle corner outfield duties in addition to playing in the infield. Primary second baseman has confidence in his glove hand and showed the ability to make the routine play with regularity. Registered accurate 77 mph arm strength across the diamond.

Marc Caggiano 3B / SS / Gateway, PA / 2019Unfortunately an issue with traffic prevented Caggiano from participating on day one and weather limited the Red Team to only one game on the final day of game play. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound right-handed hitter took advantage of his limited opportunities going 1-for-2 with a triple and a walk with an RBI. Caggiano also barreled the ball to left in his first at bat of the day. |
Tony DeLawrence LHP / 1B / Perkiomen Valley, PA / 2020Rankings StateRank: 24 / POS: 7
Fresh off of an impressive performance as a member of Team Pennsylvania at the PBR Future Games where his fastball sat 87-88, DeLawrence was down in velo a bit on this day. The steady light rain had an effect but the lefty was still effect working at 82-84 from his high 3/4 arm slot. Workiing around four walks in three innings of work, DeLawrence yielded just one run while striking out four. His curveball was his go to pitch on this date sitting 71-72 with late 1/7 break.

Josh Farina OF / OF / Warwick, PA / 20195-foot-10, 150-pound left-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. Displayed a line drive approach with a feel for the barrel and a bat exit velocity of 82 mph. Went 1-for-3 with a walk in game action and ran a 7.20 60-yard dash. Moves well in the outfield and tracks the ball well. Showcased accurate 77 mph arm strength to home plate. |
Alex Hlivia 2B / SS / State College Area, PA / 20215-foot-5, 130-pound right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and initiates his swing with a short leg-hang stride. Displayed solid feel for the barrel with a line drive approach in batting practice with a 76 mph bat exit velocity. Ran a 7.69 60-yard dash and showcased sound defensive skills with accurate 76 mph arm strength across the diamond. |
Luke Holman RHP / SS / Wyomissing, PA / 2021Rankings StateRank: 5 / POS: 2
Member of Team PA at the 2018 PBR Future Games Facing a deep and talented Allegheny Pirates offense Holman was just as sharp as he was two weeks ago as a member of Team Pennsylvania at the PBR Future Games. The 6-foot-2, 170-pound righty sat 85-86 from a high 3/4 arm slot while getting repeated swinging strikes from his curveball at 72/73. Holman's curveball is an advanced pitch with a very high spin rate and a chance to be a difference maker at the next level. The sophomore also utilized a changeup with good sell at 71-73 and a splitter that showed tumbling action at 68-71. He allowed one hit over three innings while striking out four. |
Jake Madden RHP / OF / East Pennsboro, PA / 2020Rankings StateRank: 8 / POS: 2
Following a summer that saw the 6-foot-4, 160-pound righty climb up the PA Class of 2020 player rankings, Madden showed a loose, quick arm from a high 3/4 arm slot sitting 87-89 while touching 90 mph. His curveball with 11/5 rotation rolled a bit on this date at 73-76, but has the makings of a quality second offering. Madden also showcased a feel for his changeup at 79-81. Repeats his delivery well and gets a lot out of his lower half. His projectable frame will easily carry an additional 30-40 pounds in the coming years.

Kyle Mahady RHP / 3B / Nazareth Area, PA / 20206-foot, 175-pound primary pitcher unfortunately was scheduled to throw in game three, but weather forced the final game of the tournament to be cancelled. The right-handed hitter went 2-for-4 with a a walk and two RBI in game action while handling all chances cleanly at third base. |
Ryan MillerC / OF / ALLENTOWN, NJ / 20196-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. Showcased a direct swing path with a feel for the barrel. Registered an 87 mph bat exit velocity and ran a 7.53 60-yard dash. Impressed with receiving skills during game action while registering pop times of 2.07-2.15 on throws of 73 mph from the crouch during defensive evaluations. |

Cameron Panyko Morris OF / 3B / West Allegheny, PA / 20206-foot, 170-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. Showed an above average feel for the barrel in batting practice with an 83 mph bat exit velocity. Displayed the ability to handle defensive duties in the outfield (83 mph arm) and at third base (79 mph). Athletic defender will have opportunities to play a number of defensive positions at the next level. 7.25 runner went 1-for-2 in game action with a pair of walks while also swiping a pair of bases. |
Zach Shertzer 3B / 2B / Warwick, PA / 20206-foot-1, 175-pound left-handed hitter starts from a square stance and uses a heel-raise stride to initiate his swing. Displayed an above average feel for the barrel and the ability to backspin the baseball during a solid round of batting practice with a bat exit velocity of 80 mph. Went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in game action and ran a 7.54 60-yard dash. Showcased active feet and a solid glove hand defensively with accurate 77 mph arm strength across the diamond. |
Patrick Toal RHP / 3B / Haverford School, PA / 20206-foot-2, 175-pound primary pitcher did not get a chance to take the mound due to the final game of the tournament being cancelled because of rain. The right-handed hitter went 1-for-3 with two walks and an RBI in game action. Toal showed athletic actions defensively and the ability to handle chores at both corner infield positions. |
Evan Williams 3B / 2B / Downingtown West, PA / 2019Rankings StateRank: 196 / POS: 20
5-foot-9, 165-pound right-handed hitter went 1-for-3 in game action with two runs scored and twice was hit by a pitch. A 6.84 runner, Williams stole one base and flashed athletic actions defensively at the hot corner.
