The 2015 Eastern PA College Prospect Showcase took place on July 1 at War Memorial Field on the campus of Ephrata High School. Our rundown of the participants continues today with the seven catchers in attendance.
catchers: Class of 2016
Victor Gonzalez, C/1B, Berks Catholic
5-foot-11, 195-pound right-handed hitter. Starts from square stance with a lift and replace stride. Good rhythm and balance to swing with an 83 mph bat exit velocity. At times swing gets a bit lengthy, but flat swing plane allows him to stay in hitting zone for extended period of time. Showcased 7.50 foot speed and pop times of 2.20-2.26 on throws of 70 mph from the crouch. A tendency to fall off mid-line in delivering throws to second base is correctable.
Troy Lachenmayer, C, Spring-Ford
6-foot, 150-pound right-handed hitter. Starts from a slightly open stance and utilizes a toe tap stride with a weight shift to create a bat exit velocity of 77 mph. Showcased a 7.37 60-yard dash and 75 mph arm strength from the crouch with pop times of 2.05-2.12. Displayed athleticism and receives ball well behind dish. Additional work to shore up long arm throwing motion could see pop times drop below 2.00 level.
catchers: Class of 2017
Danny Doherty, C/1B, New Hope-Solebury
6-foot-2, 200-pound right-handed hitter. The primary catcher starts from a slightly open stance with a lift and replace stride to initiate his swing. Displayed a direct swing path and the ability to barrel the baseball routinely with a bat exit velocity of 77 mph. Doherty displayed quick release and active feet with pop times of 2.10-2.20. He showcased a 71 mph arm from the crouch but had some difficulty with transitioning from catch to throw.
Luke Trainer, C, Conestoga Valley
5-foot-11, 180-pound left-handed hitter. Starts from a square stance and utilizes a short lift and replace stride to initiate his swing. Showcased above average barrel whip with a bat exit velocity of 87 mph. Trainer ran a 7.51 60-yard dash and displayed pop times of 2.01-2.12 on throws of 73 mph from the crouch. Additional work to allow backside to finish on throws to second base would drop pop times significantly.
Stephen Williams, C/OF, Daniel Boone
5-foot-9, 150-pound right-handed hitter. Starts from a slightly open stance and utilizes a heel raise stride to initiate his swing. Displayed significant barrel drag with a bat exit velocity of 73 mph. Showcased a 7.78 60-yard dash and pop times of 2.35-2.50 on throws of 64 mph from the crouch. Defensive abilities will be aided by additional strength gains and physical maturation.
catchers: Class of 2018/2019
Nate Campbell, C/3B, Spring-Ford, 2018
5-foot-6, 180-pound right-handed hitter. Starts from a slightly open stance and utilizes a heel raise stride to initiate his swing. A bit of a hitch in his hands during the load phase leads to some barrel drag, but Campbell displayed some gap power potential with a bat exit velocity of 82 mph. Showcased pop times of 2.20-2.30 on throws of 71 mph from the crouch. Receives well and should continue to make strides with strength gains and physical maturation.
Casey Rother, C, Tamaqua, 2018
6-foot-3, 180-pound right-handed hitter. Starts from a square stance with some arm bar during load phase. Displayed above average feel for the barrel and an 81 mph bat exit velocity. Rother ran a 7.92 60-yard dash and flashed pop times of 2.15-2.25 on throws of 74 mph from the crouch. Receives well and shows some present arm strength. Will continue to develop with physical maturity and improvements on footwork and transition.
