2019 Preseason All-State Showcase: LHP Analysis

The 2019 Preseason All-State Showcase took place February 16th and 17th at Keystone State Baseball Academy in Manhiem. Today we conclude a series of articles analyzing the prospects in attendance with a look at those players that participated as primary left-handed pitchers.

Top Prospects

Ty FedericiChase Kriebel

Ty Federici, Lake-Lehman HS, Class of 2022, LHP/OF
The top ranked prospect statewide in his class showed exactly why putting together the most impressive two-way performance of the two day event. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound lefty used his strength in his lower half to create drive to the plate with a quick repeatable delivery. Out of a high 3/4 arm slot his fastball sat 88-90 with some effort. The pitch is currently relatively flat. Slider at 82-84 showed late, sharp break which was two-plane at times and was thrown with advanced arm speed. He is still working to find a feel for his third pitch, a changeup at 79-83.

The right-handed hitter took the most impressive round of batting practice over two days, and it was not close. Starting from a slightly open stance he initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. Utilizing an explosive hip turn and strength in his lower half to create barrel whip he punished baseballs repeatedly with advanced power for his age. Registered a bat exit velocity of 100 mph and ran a 7.62 60-yard dash. Federici finished his impressive day by showcasing capable defensive actions in the outfield with 93 mph arm strength.

Chase Kriebel, Clarion Area HS, Class of 2022, LHP
6-foot, 160-pound lefty is just beginning to fill out into his mature frame. The member of Team Pennsylvania's 14U roster at the 2018 PBR Junior Future Games impressed sitting 80-84 from three different arm slots. Kriebel changes effortlessly without losing his feel or command from high 3/4, to low 3/4, to sidearm and showed the same ability in game action last August. All three fastballs show significant arm-side run with the two lower slots also producing above average sink. Kriebel throws a pair of breaking balls from each slot as well with his curveball sitting 70-71 and his slider sitting 70-73. His shows advanced feel for a nasty changeup at 76-77 which has both arm-side run and sink. Kriebel's current mix of pitches and arm angles make him one of the most interesting follows in this class. As he continues to mature physically additional velocity should follow.

Additional Left-Handed Pitchers (in alphabetical order)

Josh Beck, Lancaster Catholic HS, Class of 2021, LHP
Projectable 6-foot-6, 180-pounder sat 81-82 from a high 3/4 arm slot with a low leg stack. A long arm takeaway and long levers leads to an inconsistent release point and some command issues at this point in his development. Delivery is controlled and far from max effort projecting for increased velocity in the future. Curveball shows 1/7 shape at 75/76 with some depth at times. Changeup is thrown with good arm speed but lacks any movement and is stiff at 78-79. Definite follow in this class.

Colton Book, Manheim Central HS, Class of 2021, LHP/1B
6-foot-3, 190-pound two-way prospect sat 81-83 out of a 3/4 arm slot with a deliberate, repeatable delivery. Fastball showed some arm-side run and was commanded with regularity. Curveball shows late, slider break at 71-75. Changeup is thrown at near fastball arm speed at 74-77. Right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. Displayed balance throughout with a feel for the barrel and some gap power. Registered an 86 mph bat exit velocity and ran a 7.22 60-yard dash. Showcased athletic actions around the bag at first base with accurate 76 mph arm strength across the diamond.

Teagan Duffie, Daniel Boone Area HS, Class of 2020, LHP/1B
6-foot-2, 190-pound two-way prospect sat 81-82 off the mound out of a 3/4 arm slot. Begins with a side rocker step and repeats delivery well with some hip coil action. Curveball shows some depth with 12/6 rotation at 70-72. Changeup is thrown with slower arm motion at 74-76. Left-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a short, lift-and-replace stride. Showcased balance throughout while staying in the hitting zone for an extended period of time with a feel for the barrel. Registered a bat exit velocity of 90 mph and ran a 7.34 60-yard dash. Showcased capable footwork around the bag at first base with 78 mph arm strength across the diamond.

Eric Gustofson, Easton Area HS, Class of 2020, LHP
5-foot-11, 182-pounder sat 81-84 from a high 3/4 arm slot with a wrap in the back and a quick arm. Showcased a feel for the zone with arm-side run to his fastball. Curveball showed 1/7 rotation with average depth at 69-72. Changeup sat 75-77 at fastball arm speed with arm-side run from a slightly different arm slot. Athletic frame has room to continue adding strength. Additional velocity spikes are likely.

James Lordi, Jim Thorpe Area HS, Class of 2022, LHP/OF
5-foot-11, 165-pound primary pitcher sat 80-83 from a high 3/4 arm slot with some arm-side run to his fastball. Delivery is balanced, efficient and repeatable. Curveball sat 68-70 while showing 2/8 rotation with feel and has a chance to be a swing and miss pitch. Slider has similar shape at 70-72. Also displayed feel for his changeup at fastball arm speed sitting 74-77. Left-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a heel-raise stride. Dead pull oriented swing. Blocks lower half preventing full hip rotation. Registered a bat exit velocity of 89 mph and ran a 6.85 60-yard dash. Showcased athletic defensive actions with good carry on throws of 88 mph. Advanced two-way abilities for a prospect his age. Athletic frame with broad shoulders. Penn State commit.

Matt Mosholder, Bishop McCort HS, Class of 2019, LHP
Uncommitted 5-foot-11, 180-pounder sat 79-82 from a 3/4 arm slot with some arm-side run to his fastball. Repeats well with an up tempo delivery and showed a feel for the zone. Curveball showed short 1/7 break at 69-73 while slider had cutting action at 71-72. Does not throw a changeup.

Joshua Rankey, Loyalsock Township HS, Class of 2021, LHP/1B
6-foot-2, 150-pound two-way primary pitcher sat 73-74 out of a deliberate, easy delivery from a 3/4 arm slot. Also showcased a two-seamer at 71-73 with some arm-side run and sink. Curveball showed rolling 1/7 break at 64-65 and changeup with cut action sat 67-69. Right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and showcased a flat barrel path through the zone. Registered a 76 mph bat exit velocity and ran a 7.31 60-yard dash. Displayed capable glove work around the bag at first base with accurate 70 mph arm strength across the diamond.
