As OUA and OCAA clubs begin to announce their recruiting classes of 2020, we breakdown eight notable players to keep an eye on during their post-secondary careers. The list includes an outfielder, a pair of catchers, a left-hander and a right-hander, a first-baseman, and a couple of middle infielders.
Owen Ellis OF / SS / TA Blakelock, ON / 2021Rankings StateRank: 61 / POS: 8
Report: Ellis, a 6-foot, 187-pound outfielder, is heading to Guelph. A member of Team Ontario in the Canada Cup and the Future Games in 2019, Ellis will have a chance to be a top player in the OUA due to a well-rounded game. He’s a 6.79 runner with athleticism and body control, which shows on both sides of the ball. In the outfield, Ellis has the speed, arm strength, and overall defensive abilities to play in centre for Guelph. At the plate, it’s a compact swing, he stays inside the ball and works with bat speed. There’s strength, and power in his game, although he’s more of a gap-to-gap guy. Great get for Guelph, and Ellis will be a key cog for them for years to come. |
Tyler Chong RHP / C / Markham District, ON / 2020Rankings StateRank: 35 / POS: 12
Report: Chong, a two-way guy for the Toronto Mets, is joining a powerhouse OCAA team in the Durham Lords. Chong is coming off of a season in which he caught for Team Ontario in the Canada Cup. Behind the plate, he's solid. Chong receives and moves comfortably, and displays a clean transfer with quick releases, working in the 2.00-2.17 range with throws up to 77 on pop-times. At the plate, it's a flat path and a contact-oriented swing. He looks to use the middle of the field and is a line-drive type hitter. On the mound, he's a strike-thrower that sits 82-85, topping out at 86. He shows feel for a curveball with 11/5 shape. A two-way guy who will be a good player in the OCAA. |
Nick Fraser LHP / 1B / Nelson, ON / 2019Rankings StateRank: 21 / POS: 3
Report: Laurier recently announced that Fraser, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound left-handed pitcher from the Ontario Blue Jays, is headed to campus. Fraser has sat in the mid-80's, maxing out in the upper 80’s in the past. He throws a curveball with 1/7 shape and depth, making for a strong two-pitch combination when he’s at his best. It's a clean delivery and he works from a high 3/4 slot. Fraser has missed some time in the past due to injuries, but when he's been healthy, there's a lot to like. |
Cameron Faber 1B / RHP / Southwood, ON / 2020Rankings StateRank: 83 / POS: 2
Report: Faber, a two-way guy, listed at 6-foot-4, 225-pounds, is headed to McMaster. At the plate, there’s some strength and pop when he looks to elevate. He’s been up to 87 on exit velocities and has the capability to drive the baseball. In the infield, he can man first-base, he’s got good size for the position, and his hands work through the baseball cleanly. On the mound, he’s worked up to 80 in the past with good leverage from a high ¾ slot. Faber will be a nice piece for McMaster. |
Cole Carpenter SS / 2B / St. Francis Catholic Secondary (Ontario), ON / 2020Rankings StateRank: 100 / POS: 13
Report: Carpenter, an infielder for the Great Lakes Gators, is a new member of the Brock Badgers. 6-foot-1, 165-pounds, Carpenter is a 7.59 runner as well. At the plate, he works with some looseness and bat speed. He works short to the ball and has a smooth stroke with an 85 exit velo. In the infield, the actions are clean, he moves with comfort going both ways, glove-hand transfers work, and he lets off accurate throws. He’s got a chance to be a solid player for Brock going forward. |
Dylan Campese OF / C / St. Joan of Arc, ON / 2020Rankings StateRank: 102 / POS: 23
Report: Campese, a catcher for the Titans Baseball Club, is headed to Kingston as he joins the Queen's University Gaels. Listed at 5-foot-11, 170-pounds, Campese is an athletic backstop who moves well for the position. At the plate, it's a left-handed swing that works on plane with some whip through the hitting zone. There's some strength, and he's been up to 86 off the tee, but it's more of a line-drive, all-fields approach. Behind the plate, the actions are clean, and he displays accurate footwork and body control. He works up to 73 on throws and has been in the 2.10-2.25 range on pop-times. Campese is a good get for Queens at a premier position. |
Patrick Stasyszyn RHP / OF / Richview Collegiate Institute , ON / 2020Rankings StateRank: 143 / POS: 38
Report: Stasyszyn, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound right-hander out of the Ontario Terriers organization, is headed to the University of Toronto. The righty works with a longer arm action, and a slightly cross-fire delivery. He sits 75-77, maxing out at 78. He’ll mix in a slurve-type breaking ball with some depth and a changeup with some arm-side run. Stasyszyn will be a contributor for UofT throughout his OUA career. |
Ryan Kehoe 2B / SS / Brooklin High School, ON / 2020Rankings StateRank: 111 / POS: 1
Report: An attendee of the CDN Showcase, Kehoe, is now a member of the Waterloo Warriors. He works linear towards the mound at the plate, staying inside and through the zone with bat speed. It's a stroke designed to use the middle of the field, and he'll do so with solid line drive contact. In the infield, the actions are clean, his hands work, and the transfers are smooth. He'll hit at the OUA level while being a solid defender. |
