NorthEast Senior Games: Quick Hits
August 15, 2023
This past week, our staff travelled to Cortland, New York as Canada took part in the NorthEast Senior Games for the third straight year. The event featured over 150 of the top uncommitted seniors in Ontario, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut and West Virginia.
Over the past two years at the event, Ontario has had 17 rostered players commit to US schools including six going the Division I route out of high school including Illinois, Michigan, Troy, Niagara, Ohio and North Dakota State. Our first year at the event also saw an MLB draft-pick on Canada's roster with Jonah Tong who's now in the New York Mets organization.
Each year, the event attracts a large number of college coaches from the NorthEast at all collegiate levels looking to get their hands on some of the top unsigned 2024s in the region.
Canada's team, made up entirely of prospects out of Ontario, had many standout performers at Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex and we begin to break it all down below with scouting notes and video on seven players who stood out to our staff and college coaches in attendance.
NORTHEAST SENIOR GAMES: QUICK HITS
Rocky Johnson 1B / OF / St Michael's College School, ON / 2024Rankings StateRank: 39 / POS: 1
2024 Rocky Johnson was dominant on the offensive side of the ball in both games of their doubleheader Wednesday afternoon. Rocky’s assertive lower-half and contact approach helped him rack up 2 XBH’s, one being a 2-RBI triple to CF, along with two hard-hit singles on both sides of the field. He was a big part of a commanding Canadian offence with an EV of up to 92.3 mph. Rocky’s no-fear approach at the plate made him one of the more intriguing bats this week.

Nicholas Moretto SS / 2B / South Carleton, ON / 20242024 Nicholas Moretto continues to show improvement every time he steps on the field. At a projectable 6-foot-4, 160-pounds, Nicky excels on both sides of the baseball. His versatile playstyle and confident hands mix in well with his whippy bat and consistent hard contact to all parts of the field. A gutsy play at SS along with two hits and an XBH shows a lot of potential in the growth of his game. Definitely a player to keep an eye on

Matt Barkley OF / LHP / Thousand Islands Secondary, ON / 2025Rankings StateRank: 79 / POS: 15
2025 Matt Barkley was one of the hottest Canadian bats on Wednesday. His low, powerful approach at the plate along with a smooth path to the baseball allows him to drive balls all around the field. Matt put up three hits, including one triple to CF, with patience at the plate working in deep counts and plenty QAB’s. Great vision in the OF, easy routes to the ball and solid body control. Quality overall showing on both sides of the baseball by the uncommitted 2025.
|
Derek Riesberry RHP / 2B / Notre Dame, ON / 20242024 Derek Riesberry took advantage of his 72-74 mph (2400+ max SR) slider which generated a lot of swings and misses. FB worked 74-78 T79, showing progress as his 5-foot-10, 170lbs build fills out. Keep your eye on him for more improvement.
|
Chase Mulligan LHP / 1B / Etobicoke Collegiate Institute, ON / 20242024 Chase Mulligan was on target all around the zone with lots of movement on his CB. Should improve with repetition and opportunity.
|
Jagan Chanderdat SS / RHP / Saunders , ON / 20242024 Jagan Chanderdat found the zone comfortably with his FB, topping out at 75 mph. Jagan has to ability to work the count in his favour to utilize his CB with lots of top-to-bottom movement late. Good vision at the plate, generating a lot of contact all around the park. Stay alert as more improvement is on the way.
|
Adriano Scola 1B / OF / Cardinal Carter, ON / 20242024 Adriano Scola mixes in a solid contact and power approach at the plate, raking balls to the middle and right side of the field. Adriano sent two hard hits into the field Wednesday with a very consistent bat. At 6-foot-2, 185 lbs, he has lots of room to increase his power and become a deep threat at the plate. Keep a close eye on the uncommitted 2024.
