Mason Dobie SS / 2B / Georgian Bay Community, ON / 2021Rankings StateRank: 7 / POS: 3
MEAFORD, Ontario - Mason Dobie has the drive to play college baseball - literally. While most players have a short jaunt to get to practice, the Georgian Bay Community High School junior makes long rides with his parents just to be part of the game he loves. “We live two-and-a-half hours from where we play,” Dobie related. “We don’t have baseball in our town or any around, that’s why we have to travel so far. It’s not fun to do for a two-hour practice … like my teammates say, ‘you’re crazy to drive that far.’ “But we don’t see it as work any more. We love doing it and my parents love watching me play. We’re doing it for all the right reasons.” The desire to play has not gone unnoticed, helped out by participation in the Future Games which was followed by a commitment to the University of Dayton. “George Halim, my club coach, contacted them a year ago,” the seventh-ranked 2021 player in Canada explained. “I went to the Future Games and they saw me there. As soon as it was over we talked on the phone and they asked me to come for a visit. I found a day to visit and they offered. I slept on the decision and decided I wanted to go there.” Interest from Oregon, Virginia Commonwealth, Stoneybrook and Ohio University also followed the Future Games as well as a visit to Evansville. “It was awesome, I loved it down there,” Dobie said of the Future Games in Georgia back in August. “I didn’t really perform the greatest, I wish I’d done better, but it was an awesome experience. They were all great players and coaches there and it was a great atmosphere. It was a lot of fun.” The visit to Dayton, a nine-hour trip from his home in Meaford - located two-and-a half hours northwest of Toronto - was memorable as well for the 6-2 175-pounder. “As soon as I got there I felt really comfortable,” Dobie said. “It was just a feeling. The coaches were awesome and the facilities were really nice. I felt it was a good fit for me.” |
