PBR OK Sandlot Scout Day Upgrade: Shortstops Analysis

The third annual PBR Sandlot Scout Day was held at Broken Arrow HS on May 18th and at Oklahoma Christian on May 19th. This two day event feature most players in Sandlot organization. Covered here are only those players who chose to upgrade to a PBR profile at the event.

Max Brown SS / C / Wagoner, OK / 2022

Top 5 SS in OK 2022 class. Displayed a 6-foot, 165-pound lean frame. The right-handed hitter starts from a tall, slightly-open stance and utilizes a leg-hang to initiate his swing. Demonstrated consistent weight shift to a soft-front side. Featured athleticism in the box with advanced barrel awareness, evidenced by an 82 mph bat-exit velocity. Recorded a 7.34 60-yard dash. Showcased fluid actions at shortstop with feet that arrived on time to the baseball. A quick high ¾ arm-stroke with smooth transfers allowed for 4.0-second plays to be made regularly. Notched an accurate 72 mph arm-strength across the infield.  The catcher flashed lightning-quick hands behind the plate registering pop times ranging from 1.95-2.06. Showed adequate receiving skills with a soft glove hand behind the dish. Moved feet well covering both sides of the plate on blocks. 

Jack Buck RHP / SS / Bixby, OK / 2023

A 5-foot-9, 165-pound frame. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from an open stance that uses a slight step back with lead foot tap for timing, ending up in an even stance in relation to the pitcher. Hands start at ear and lower slightly. Swing is balanced, level and quick. In BP, shows a middle of the field and flat approach, 79 mph exit velocity. Runs a 7.45 60-yard dash with short, quick strides. Defensively, footwork is smooth, along with glove. Receives ball with soft hands. Transfer is developing, as is throwing motion. Three-quarter arm slot generates above-average infield arm velocity for age at 74 mph. 

Bobby Byers SS / 2B / Cascia Hall, OK / 2021

The 5-foot-8, 135-pound right-handed hitter displayed a lean frame. The righty starts from a tall, slightly-open stance utilizing hands that start next to his ear. His swing initiates with the bat moving in a circular load coupled with a leg-kick. Gets connected in the zone behind the baseball allowing for consistent barrel awareness. In BP, shows a flat and middle of the field approach, 76 mph bat-exit velocity. Runs a 7.00 60-yard dash. Defensively, shows above-average athletic actions with precise footwork setting himself up for momentum towards the target. Displayed above-average hands that worked easy through the ball. On throws, utilizes a smooth takeaway with a moderate arm stroke coming through with solid arm-speed. Recorded accurate throws of 79 mph across the infield. 

Gage Dollins SS / 2B / Mcalester, OK / 2022

The 5-foot-11, 130-pound middle infielder has a tall, lean frame. The switch hitter is similar from both sides of the plate starting with a tall, slightly open stance which features a slight up, down wiggle for rhythm in his hands. Utilizes a moderate leg-kick to initiate his swing with a load that moves straight back. Displayed above-average hip, shoulder separation with a flat bat-path to the ball in BP, showing 80 mph exit velocities. Runs a 7.35 60. Defensively, shows a simple approach to the ball with adequate footwork and soft hands. Consistently fielded the ball on the center-line of his body. On throws, shows a quick and short arm-stroke coming through an accurate, high ¾ arm-slot on throws of 67 mph across the infield. 

Reese Donihoo SS / 3B / Mustang, OK / 2021

A 5-foot-10, 160-pound muscular and projectable frame. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from a wide stance that begins slightly open and ends slightly closed. Utilizing a very high leg kick, the hitter generates power with hand load from ear to rear shoulder and strong torque in the lower half. In BP, shows a middle to pull approach with mostly barrels and some pop, 83 mph exit velocity with room to improve by utilizing shorter stroke and smaller kick leading to more balance during swing. Runs a 6.88 60 with long, fluid strides. Defensively, shows intuitive footwork, great angles to the ball and smooth hands. On throws, shows an extremely strong arm with a quick, straight over the top stroke at 85 mph. 

Bryson Evans SS / OF / Comanche, OK / 2022

A 5-foot-9, 160-pound frame. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from an even stance. Uses a small stride forward and very slight hand load to generate a quick, flat swing that generates solid exit velocity (81 mph) for such a quiet swing. In BP, shows a flat and pull side approach. Runs a 6.91 60. Defensively, shows good hands and excellent range. Gets in position early, stays low to the ground with smooth transfers leading into fast low three-quarter throws with good accuracy. Infield throws clocked in at 75 mph. 

Jackson Grace SS / 2B / Lone Grove, OK / 2023

The 5-foot-9, 150-pound middle infielder features a solid, lean frame. The right-handed hitter starts slightly crouched with a slightly open stance and utilizes a lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing. Hands start next to the ear, just above the shoulder and move slightly up and back upon load. Hits to a stiff front-side while staying through his original setup height through a high finish. In BP, shows an opposite field and ground ball approach, 76 mph exit velocities. Runs a 7.28 60-yard dash. Defensively, shows adequate actions while playing low to the ground with average footwork. Fields the ball consistently on the center-line of his body with soft hands giving and taking depending on hops. Showcased a quick arm-stroke featuring a short takeaway on throws of 74 mph across the diamond.

Brody Green 3B / SS / Owasso, OK / 2021

Top 5 player in the 2021 class. The 6-foot-4, 170-pound infielder features a long and lean frame with obvious projectability. Offensively, the right-handed hitter starts from a slightly bent, square stance and utilizes a lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing. Hands are next to the ear to start and don’t move upon loading. The righty is athletic in the box hitting behind and through the baseball consistently.  In BP, shows a middle to pull approach with much more pop than his 82 mph bat-exit velocity would suggest, nearly all barrels. Runs a 7.05 60-yard dash. Defensively, showcases long, athletic actions with above-average footwork to the baseball. Soft hands and a strong lower-half allow for accurate 81 mph throws across the infield using a short takeaway while getting long out in front.

Caden Green SS / 2B / Berryhill , OK / 2020

Seminole State JC commit. The 5-foot-11, 155-pound middle infielder displayed a tall, lean frame with some twitch. Offensively, the right-handed hitter starts from a closed, crouched stance utilizing a leg-lift stride to initiate his swing. Hands start away from the body moving up and back upon load. Hits to a stiff front-side while staying athletic in the box. In BP, shows a middle to pull approach, mostly barrels, 82 mph bat-exit velocity. Runs a 6.87 60-yard dash. Defensively, shows easy, rhythmic actions with advanced feet that play through the baseball. Bends at the waist to field the ball on occasion. Demonstrated a quick, full arm-stroke on throws to first while registering accurate, 83 mph arm-strength that should give him the flexibility to play either MIF position at the next level. 

Caiden Hooker SS / 2B / Salina, OK / 2020

The 6-foot, 160-pound middle infielder displayed a solid frame. Offensively, the right-handed hitter starts from a crouched, slightly-open stance and utilizes a quick lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing. Hands are mid-helmet to start with varied circular rhythm followed by a straight back load. Pulls momentum away from the ball upon contact by rotating hips too early. In BP, shows a pull and flat approach, 73 mph bat-exit velocity. Runs a 7.25 60-yard dash. Defensively, showcased adequate footwork while playing low to the ground. Used a quick, full arm stroke while registering accurate 73 mph throws across the infield. 

Grady James SS / 2B / Rejoice Christian, OK / 2021

A 5-foot-8, 150-pound muscular frame. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from an even stance with lead foot very slightly open prior to hand load and stride and even more lightly closed after. Hand load is quiet with movement from shoulder to slightly lower position at start of straight, line-drive swing plane. Smoot, quiet motion with great balance leads to consistent contact out front. In BP, shows an all fields and flat approach, 83 mph exit velocity with very small stride and hip rotation. Runs a 6.97 60 with average strides and max effort. Defensively, shows good instincts, sometimes superfluous footwork covered up by incredibly smooth hands. On throws, shows an easy arm stroke coming through three-quarter arm slot with good accuracy at 78 mph. 

Braeden Jones SS / RHP / Mustang, OK / 2021

A 6-foot-1, 175-pound lean frame with lots or room to add size and strength. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from a shoulder width, slightly open, and balanced position with hands inline with shoulder height. Uses a short and soft stride before pulling his hands through a slightly uphill path through extension with a high finish. In BP shows an all fields approach with occasional lift, some barrels, 84 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.15 60. Defensively, shows confident actions with light and athletic footwork and soft and quick hands. On throws, shows an athletic arm with the ability to throw from different slots with different strokes with accuracy at  81 mph.

Wil Joplin SS / 2B / Roff, OK / 2021

Top 7 SS in OK 2021 class. 6-foot, 140-pound long, lean frame with obvious projectability. The left-handed hitter starts with a square, slightly bent stance with bat wiggle on the shoulder. Utilizes a leg-lift stride to initiate his swing. Displayed feel for the barrel using a strong top-hand to drive the bat through the hitting zone. Showed a stiff front-side upon impact with slight drift, allowing for 78 mph bat-exit velocities. In BP, shows a middle to opposite field approach  with occasional lift, and mostly barrels. Featured soft, quick feet during defensive evaluations which carried 80 mph accurate throws across the infield. Played low to the ground with range to both sides. Recorded a 7.02 60-yard dash.

Blake Lamb SS / RHP / Jenks , OK / 2023

A 5-foot-11, 150-pound lean body with plenty of room for more size on a long frame. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from an even stance that starts slightly open. Small stride and non-explosive back hip rotation in a young batter means that power will come with more swing development. Hand load is small with hands dropping significantly to reach swing plane, which is long and looks to become a power swing very soon. In BP shows, 82 mph exit velocity with more to come. Runs a 6.97 60 with lankiness not yet generating the speed that it promises. Defensively, shows deliberate actions indicating that a move to third base may be coming if he continues to put on size and strength. Shows well above average hands. On throws, shows quick stroke coming through a sidearm slot with middling accuracy, improving with age. Strong infield arm for age clocks in at 74 mph. 

Benjamin Lawson SS / OF / Bethany, OK / 2020

The 5-foot-10, 170-pound shortstop is physical with present athleticism. The right-handed hitter starts open with hands that are flat above the ear. A slight wiggle and move back to load coupled with a lift-and-replace stride initiates his swing. Displayed a smooth, repeatable swing while utilizing a strong lower half to drive the baseball towards the middle of the field. In BP, shows a middle of the field and flat approach, nearly all barrels, 90 mph exit velocity. Runs a 6.93 60-yard dash. Defensively, showcases advanced footwork with easy, athletic actions. Played low to the ground with soft hands allowing for above-average range. On throws, a quick, full arm-stroke comes through an over-the top arm-slot generating accurate 82 mph arm-strength across the infield. 

Hunter Lenochan SS / RHP / Edmond Memorial, OK / 2021

Displayed a 6-foot, 165-pound long frame with solid build. The right-handed hitter starts with a square, slightly bent stance and utilizes a leg-lift to initiate his swing. Bat-wiggle upon load creates rhythm coupled with feel for a strong lower half. Hit to a soft front-side upon impact while finding the barrel during batting practice. Registered a 77 mph bat-exit velocity. The shortstop featured easy, calculated actions during defensive evaluations with feet that played through the baseball. Soft glove hand turns over at the last second to field the ball. A moderate takeaway and quick ¾ arm-stroke forward allowed for accurate 77 mph throws across the infield. Recorded a 7.58 60-yard dash. 

Garrett Long SS / OF / Adair, OK / 2021

The 6-foot, 170-pound shortstop features a solid, physical frame. Offensively, the left-handed hitter begins with a square stance utilizing a leg-lift to initiate his swing. Hands start away from the body and get to the load using a shoulder turn. Hits to a tall, stiff front-side and gets a flat bat-path to the baseball on impact. In BP, shows a pull and flat/ground approach, some barrels, 81 mph bat-exit velocity. Ran a 6.68 60-yard dash, good for second-best at the event. Defensively, shows quick, controlled actions with advanced range. Displayed adequate footwork with soft hands. On throws, showcases a full arm-stroke coming over the top generating accurate 78 mph arm-strength across the infield. 

Michael Marin SS / OF / Barnsdall, OK / 2020

A 5-foot-8, 165-pound strong framed shortstop. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from an open stance with his weight shifted on his back foot. During his load he wraps his hands behind his head and has a straight to the ball swing path. He finished his swing with a high two handed finish his exit velo was clocked at 84 mph. Runs a 6.77 60. Defensively, shows confidence and the ability to move side to side. The strong shortstop showed some raw actions. On throws, shows a short arm stroke coming through a ¾ to over the top slot with good accuracy at 82mph from the infield. From the outfield he once again showed confidence and the ability to track balls. His throws from the outfield came in at 84 mph.

Diego Ramos SS / RHP / Vian, OK / 2023

A 6-foot-1, 150-pound athletic framed shortstop. Offensively, the switch hitter starts with his feet even and a slight bend in his knees. Uses a quick stride and a very short swing straight to the ball. To finish his swing he has a clean one handed finish. In BP, he showed a spray approach, some barrels71 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.00 60. Defensively, shows tons of athletic actions, quick footwork, smooth hands when he gets in good position. On throws, shows a quick arm stroke coming through a ¾ slot with  accuracy at 79 mph. 

Cade Smith SS / RHP / Purcell, OK / 2021

A 6-foot, 140-pound lanky shortstop. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from a balanced setup and his bat resting on his shoulder. Uses a leg kick and a slow controlled swing to initiate his swing. He has a level swing path and clean balanced finish In BP, shows a middle to opposite field and flat approach, some barrels, 78 mph exit velo. Runs a 6.95 60. Defensively, shows smooth actions, athletic footwork, quick hands. On throws, shows  fluid arm action coming through a ¾ slot with accuracy at 77 mph. 

Caden Storts RHP / SS / Piedmont, OK / 2020

Featured a 5-foot-10, 140-pound lean frame.  The right-handed hitter begins with a square, upright stance utilizing a short leg-lift to initiate his swing. Demonstrated feel for his hands with a line-drive approach during batting practice to register a 73 mph bat-exit velocity. Recorded a 7.60 60-yard dash. Showcased long actions defensively with soft hands and an accurate 80 mph arm-strength across the diamond. 

Devyn Trujillo SS / C / Bishop Kelley, OK / 2022

A 5-foot-7, 140-pound frame. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from an even stance. Uses no leg-kick, only a small lift of front heel before a vicious rear hip rotation. Hands start high, above ear, moving back slightly upon load and leading into a looping downward swing. Line-drive contact is consistently made out in front of the plate. In BP, shows and all fields and flat approach, mostly barrels, 76 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.09 60. Defensively, shows fluid movement and natural actions. Glovework is smooth and arm is quick with natural throwing ability from any angle in reference to first base. Throws from three-quarter arm slot with outstanding accuracy at 70 mph. 

Cole White SS / RHP / Broken Arrow, OK / 2020

The 5-foot-11, 165-pound middle infielder displayed an athletic and lean frame. The right-handed hitter starts from a square, crouched stance with hands at the shoulder. A rhythmic back, forward movement upon load coupled with a leg-lift initiates his swing. Consistently found barrels during batting practice while hitting into tall and stiff front-side. In BP shows a flat and middle of the field approach, 80 mph bat exit velocities that will increase with improved extension. Registered a 6.97 60-yard dash. Defensively showcased smooth, easy actions with advanced feet that arrived on time and played through the baseball. Utilized soft hands and above-average body control on the slow roller play with ability to throw from any arm-angle. Accurate 82 mph throws carried across the infield. 

Matthew Wilson SS / 2B / Yukon, OK / 2020

A 5-foot-8, 148-pound middle infielder has a lean frame with athletic ability. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from an even setup with a slight bend in his knees, he keeps his bat flat behind his head. During his load he slowly shifts his weight back and brings his bat upright. He uses a level swing plane with a high finish while staying balanced throughout. In BP, shows a middle to pull approach with some lift, mostly barrels, 82 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.14 60. Defensively, shows quick actions while staying low to the ball, solid footwork, hands work well while in good position. On throws, shows an aggressive arm stroke coming through over the top with consistent accuracy at 72mph.
