OK Summer Underclass Games Analysis: 2019 Corner Infielders

Prep Baseball Report Oklahoma hosted its first event of the summer at beautiful L.Dale Mitchell Stadium on the campus of OU. This event hosted nearly 80 of the top 2020 and 2019 graduates from around the state for a pro showcase followed by games. These talented underclassmen showed their skills in front of coaches from every level of college baseball as well as the PBR OK staff.
All of the video, stats, and pictures from the event have been posted on each individual player's profiles. Over the next week and a half, we will be taking an in-depth look at each player from the event position by position.Though a few of these 2019 grads listed below are two-way players, they will be covered here as corner infielders. Each player's full profile can be viewed by clicking on their picture. All exit velo's were taken from a tee and all the at bats in the game started with a 1-1 count.
2019 Corner Infielders
Gus Collins RHP / 1B / Pryor, OK / 2019A physically advanced 6-foot-3, 200-pound frame with strength throughout. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from a wide, quiet, and athletic stance. Uses a smooth load, some length, flat path to contact with a high finish, strong hands. In BP, showed a middle to pull approach with pop and strength, 89 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.76 60. Defensively, at first base, shows aggressive actions with active feet and good hands. Violent on the throw with a quick arm, 85 mph with accuracy. In the game, hit three balls to the shortstop, reaching base once. |
Zac DeLong 3B / RHP / Lawton MacArthur, OK / 2019A 5-foot-10, 185-pound frame with some strength throughout. Offensively, the left-handed hitter bats from an open, athletic stance with rhythm in his hands. Uses a big hanging leg kick for timing, short to the ball with quick hands, shows some strength. In BP, peppered the pull gap with line drives, some middle as well, 88 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.61 60. Defensively, above average hands, makes the backhand play very well, profiles to stay at third base. Throws from a high-3/4 slot, 80 mph with good carry and accuracy. In the game, went 1-for-2 with a single to left field. |
Wade Elliott 3B / SS / Deer Creek, OK / 2019A Missouri commit. Stands 6-foot-1, 205 pounds with strength throughout. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from a relaxed upright stance with rhythm in his hands. Uses a moderate hanging leg kick for timing and is short to the ball with very quick hands. In BP, shows a gap to gap approach with lift occasionally pulling down the line, big pop, multiple balls off the wall, exit velo of 91 at this event, previously 99 mph. Runs a 7.26 60. Defensively, shows elite hands and feet with rhythm and confidence making every play with ease. Throws from a low-3/4 slot with a very quick release, 77 mph, some accuracy. In the game, went 1-for-2 with two HBP’s, a strikeout, and blasted a double to the pull gap. |
Carson Funkhouser 3B / RHP / Fletcher, OK / 2019A physically advanced 6-foot-4, 210-pound frame with broad shoulders and strength throughout. The right-handed hitter bats from an athletic, balanced set-up with rhythm throughout. Uses a moderate leg kick and slight hand pump for timing, slightly uphill path with bat speed, high finish. In BP, lived in the opposite field gap with consistent pop, some lift, also showed the ability to turn on the ball when pitched in, 94 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.87 60. Defensively, deliberate actions with sure hands and some arm strength from a low-3/4 slot, 79 mph with accuracy. Could stick at third, but might profile better at first base at an elite level. |
Gage Messner 3B / OF / Edmond North, OK / 2019A 5-foot-11, 155-pound lean frame with room to add size and strength. Offensively, the left-handed hitter bats from a slightly open, wide, and athletic set-up. Uses a short stride, is short to the ball, good extension, high finish. Shows a middle of the field, flat approach in BP, mostly barrels, 79 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.03 60. Defensively, shows active feet and good hands, throws from a low-3/4 slot with a quick release, 77 mph across the diamond. An above average outfielder as well, charges the ball well, all around confident actions, 79 mph. In the game, went 1-for-2 with a single and a pop out to third base. |
Gage Ninness 3B / 2B / Westmoore , OK / 2019A 5-foot-9, 151-pound lean frame with a strong lower half. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from a relaxed, upright set-up. Uses a smooth load with a short stride and good leg drive. Shows a mostly pull approach with some lift and pop, finding mostly barrels, 86 mph exit velo. Defensively, at third base, shows above average hands, throws from a loose 3/4 slot, long release, 77 mph across the infield, some accuracy. Athletic enough to play the outfield as well, 79 mph on the throw. In the game, was 1-for-2 with a strikeout and well stuck single. |
Blake Robertson 3B / OF / Edmond Santa Fe, OK / 2019A lean 6-foot-4, 185-pound projectable frame. Offensively, the left-handed hitter bats from a slightly open, relaxed, upright set-up. Uses a short leg with a moderate stride, flat path through contact, wiry strength. In BP, shows a middle to opposite field, flat approach, pull on the ground, hit some balls very hard, 89 mph exit velo. Runs a 6.91 60. At third base, shows elite hands and improving footwork that has become above average. Throws from multiple slots with ease, 79 mph across the diamond, some accuracy. Athletic enough to play first base and the outfield effectively as well, 82 mph throws. In the game, was 1-for-2 with a single and a missile at the second baseman. |
Cameron Thompson 1B / RHP / Owasso , OK / 2019A 6-foot-2, 185-pound lean frame with long legs, very projectable. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from an upright, back leg heavy, quiet set-up. Uses a big leg kick for timing, stays inside the ball well, some bat speed. In BP, shows a middle to opposite field approach with some opposite field pop with more pop to come, barreled most pitches, 89 mph exit velo. Runs a 7.51 60. Defensively, shows above average feet and hands around first base, moves well, accurate arm, 75 mph. In the game, was 1-for-3 with a triple to the opposite field gap. |
Braylen Wimmer 3B / Yukon, OK / 2019 A 6-foot-1, 150-pound frame with long legs, very projectable. Offensively, the right-handed hitter bats from a balanced, athletic set-up with rhythm in his hands. Uses a moderate, hanging stride for timing, very quick hands, and flat bat path. In BP, shows a pull gap, flat approach, was consistently on time and found barrels, one of the best rounds of the event. Exit velo of 89 mph that will continue to rise as he puts on size and strength. Runs a 7.02 60. Defensively, shows advanced hands and feet with consistently clean and confident actions. Throws from a low-3/4 slot, 74 mph across the diamond with accuracy. |
