OK Fall Top Prospect Games: Shortstop Analysis

PBR OK hosted the fourth annual OK Fall Top Prospect Games at beautiful Central Oklahoma. Over 65 invite-only players showcased their skill in front of the PBR OK staff, 6 colleges and two pro scouts. The talented event saw five sub 7.00 60s, 6 90+ exit velos, 14 infield velos of 80+, four outfield velos of 85+, six sub 2.00 second pop times, and five max fastballs at 85 mph. Players profiles have already been updated with stats and pictures with reports and video to be updated in the weeks to come. The number below do not represent a players all-time best, only what they achieved at this event. Today, we check out the 13 shortstops from the event.

Elijah Alexander SS / 2B / Westmoore, OK / 2021Primary middle infielder displayed an athletic and projectable 6-foot-2, 170-pound lean frame with room to add strength as he matures. The right-handed hitter starts with a loose, even stance utilizing a lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing. Loose hands at the shoulder allow for stretch upon load and a slightly uphill barrel-path through impact. Showcased advanced feel for the barrel during batting practice and registered a 78 mph bat-exit velocity from the tee utilizing an easy, repeatable swing. Recorded a 7.33 60-yard dash. The middle infielder played low to the ground with a solid first step allowing for range to both sides. Consistent rhythm while arriving to the baseball created momentum towards his target yielding accurate 80 mph throws across the diamond with more in the tank. |
Cal Birchfield SS / RHP / Rattan, OK / 2021Showcased comfortability in an athletic 6-foot, 170-pound lean frame with present twitch. The left-handed hitter starts with an open stance utilizing a leg-kick to initiate his swing. Quick hands whip through a slightly uphill barrel path in the zone creating backspin to the pull-side. A strong lower-half allowed for advanced barrel awareness during batting practice, registering an 85 mph bat-exit velocity from the tee. Recorded a 7.25 60-yard dash. The primary shortstop demonstrated fluidity in footwork and timing during defensive evaluations, showing off advanced control of his body. Evan Casey SS / OF / Sapulpa, OK / 2021Showcased obvious feel of a lean 5-foot-10, 150-pound frame with projectability, twitch, and advanced athleticism. The right-handed hitter begins from a balanced, even setup utilizing a leg-kick to initiate his swing. Generated easy bat-speed through a slightly uphill path in the zone coupled with present sink into a quick-twitch lower-half. Displayed advanced barrel whip evidenced by an 84 mph bat-exit velocity from the tee that will only improve as he adds strength to his frame. Recorded an impressive 6.43 60-yard dash flashing his ability to stick at any outfield position at the next level and top of the order prowess. The primary shortstop featured a low center of gravity and quick first step allowing for advanced range to both sides. Arrived to the ball on time generating accurate 88 mph throws across the infield out of a fluid, high ¾ arm-slot. Steven Colon Jr SS / 2B / Deer Creek, OK / 2020Displayed a long and lean 5-foot-10, 155-pound frame that can add additional strength. The right-handed hitter starts with a square, even stance utilizing a knee-knock stride to initiate his swing. Demonstrated a line-drive approach evidenced by a flat barrel-path and hitting into a front-side with give upon contact. Hands take over the swing at times with an early exit from the hitting zone. Raphael Dunlap SS / 3B / Mount St. Mary , OK / 2021Showcased a lean 5-foot-8, 160-pound frame with room to add strength as he matures. The right-handed hitter starts with a tall, even stance utilizing a short lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing. Generated a flat barrel-path through the hitting zone creating a line-drive approach during batting practice. Demonstrated feel for the middle of the field while notching a 74 mph bat-exit velocity from the tee. Recorded an 8.02 60-yard dash. Braydyn Escarcega SS / RHP / Allen, OK / 2020Demonstrated advanced feel of a long and lean 6-foot, 175-pound frame with projectability and athleticism. The right-handed hitter begins in an open stance utilizing a short toe-tap stride to initiate his swing. Solid separation and advanced bat-speed propelled the barrel through a slightly uphill path creating backspin deep to the pull side. An easy, repeatable swing with minimal effort suggests there is room to add onto an already solid 89 mph bat-exit velocity from the tee. Recorded a 6.96 60-yard dash showing comfortability in his current frame. The primary middle infielder displayed smooth, athletic actions during defensive evaluations with advanced range to both sides of the field. Soft hands and feet that arrived on time and played through the baseball set up a fluid 82 mph arm-strength across the infield out of a high ¾ arm-slot. Featured comfortability on the slow-roller play with a body and measurables that point to any of the three infield spots at the next level. |
Will Goodwin SS / 2B / Regent Prep, OK / 2023Displayed a lean 5-6, 130-pound frame with room to add size and strength as he matures.
