Ohio Spotlight Game: Padua Franciscan vs #7 Walsh Jesuit

Padua and outlasted Walsh in a very entertaining game yesterday between two of the better teams in northeast Ohio, 9-7.

The Bruins of Padua jumped out to an early 3-0 lead thanks to senior (unsigned) catcher Michael Kilner’s RBI line drive single to left, scoring senior pitcher Marc Ochoa (Heidelburg) who walked and stole second with two outs. Senior third baseman Michael Platten (Case WR) followed with a long 2-run home run over the wall in right, scoring Kilner.

Walsh battled right back when junior pitcher/shortstop Brendan Regan (Michigan State) drove a lead-off double off the fence in right center. Regan then scored on senior third baseman Dan Mendenhall’s (Earlham) RBI line drive single to left.

Senior centerfielder Chris Shorter (Case WR) followed with a 2-out single up the middle and both he and Mendenhall scored on junior DH Joshua Bennett two-out, two-run double to the gap in right center.

Padua regained the lead when second baseman Justin Beckwith walked, later moving around the bases on passed balls and wild pitches.

The Bruins added two more in the 3rd when Mendenhall and Ochoa scored on RBI singles by left fielder David Miller and first baseman Bogi Kazmour, making the score 6-3.

Walsh answered right back in the bottom of the frame when Regan doubled off the top of the fence in left, followed by a bloop double to left by senior first baseman Dominic Canzone (Ohio State).

Regan scored on Mendenhall’s grounder to short, which resulted in a throwing error to first. Canzone scored on Bennett’s groundout to second, while sophomore left fielder Nolan Quinn drove in the final run, scoring Mendenhall, with a single up the middle.

The scoring settled down as both teams made defensive plays to keep the other off the board over next couple of innings.

Kilner then delivered the big blow, as he drove a line drive into the trees in left field, scoring shortstop Kevin Houdek who single and center fielder Alex Ludwick who walked.

Walsh fought right back in the bottom of the inning, as Canzone knocked in Quinn who single and moved to third on a hit by senior right fielder Bryce Marshall.

Ochoa then gutted out the final inning, gaining a complete game hard-fought win.

Walsh outhit Padua 12-9, but Ochoa did not walk a batter while three Walsh pitchers walked six and hit two others.
