Ohio Spotlight Game: Division IV - #4 Ayersville vs #3 Hicksville
HICKSVILLE- In a battle of Green Meadows Conference rivals and top five ranked teams in Division IV, #4 Ayersville defeated #3 Hicksville 6-2.
A four run 4th inning proved to be the difference.
Back-to-back walks to seniors Tyler Brown and Eric Engel started it. Then an error on a hit to third, which could've been a double play loaded the bases.
A ground ball back to the mound was bobbled, allowing the runners to move up as the out was made at first.
With runners on second and third, junior shortstop Jacob Miller was behind in the count 1-2 before roping a shot towards third that went just of the glove, allowing two runs to score.
After Miller stole 2nd and third and a walk, Junior Dauson Dales plated Miller on a ground out back to the mound that the speedy Miller raced home on the throw to put the Pilots up 5-0.
As for when Hicksville was at the plate, Sinclair commit Jack Goonan had that under control, well sort of.
The projectable righty battled through four innings, allowing two or more runners in three of his four innings, but when the push came to shove, Goonan got out of the jam.
In the 1st inning, Hicksville's 1st two hitters Dakota Harvey and Logan Theil reached base, but a ground out, base running error and strikeout and Goonan got the Pilots out of trouble.
In the 2nd inning, after two quick outs, a hit by pitch and walk put two on. After a past ball, Hicksville 9-hole hitter Mason Hostetler lined out to second base on a 3-2 pitch.
Goonan also got in trouble in the 4th, as freshman shortstop Parker Thiel laced a single to right and sophomore catcher Lukas Yoder blooped a single to right. Goonan limited the damage, allowing just one run while striking out two in the inning.
One of Hicksville's bright spots came in the 5th when senior Wes Perry blasted a home run to left field.
Having 11 of 13 games cancelled due to weather, this wasn't the prettiest game played by the Aces. Five walks, 2 hit by pitches, 3 errors, being picked off, not covering the bunt correctly, you name it ... It just wasn't the Aces day.
Ayersville who is now 5-2, both of those loses coming to the hands of the 6th-ranked team in Division II will be in another contest against a ranked team in 5th-ranked Kalida tomorrow while Hicksville (1-2) travels to Continental.
