Ohio Insider: Updated Class of 2016 Player Rankings (February)
As the winter showcase season comes to a close and the spring high school baseball season moves closer we at PBR Ohio would like to take a look at the class of 2016 Player Rankings.
Our staff evaluated talent all across the Buckeye state during the winter season and we have had the pleasure of seeing a number of solid players, both in the fall and winter. Prospects are popping up left and right, making velocity jumps, improving 60-yard dash times and showing more power with the bat.
With that being said, we will look into “What’s New At The Top”, some “Rising Prospects”, "The Newcomers" and take a look at some of the top uncommitted prospects.
What's New At The Top
The update 2016 Player Rankings did not have much effect on the top of the class. The only new face in the top 10 belongs to Moeller's power righty, Cameron Junker.
Junker (RHP, Notre Dame) recently participated in the prestigious Super 60 and performed well, sitting in the upper-80s. This summer the righty has seen the fastball top out at 92 mph. Junker comes in a No. 6 in the rankings.
The top five stayed the same with Junker's teammate at Moeller, Nick Bennett (LHP, Louisville), remaining at the top. Athletic two-way prospect Christopher Machamer (RHP/SS, Vanderbilt) comes in at two, followed by Ty Duvall (C, Vanderbilt), Chase Murray (OF, Georgia Tech) and Jackson Tedder (LHP, Virginia).
Each of the prospects from 7-10 slip a spot with Junker moving into the No. 6 spot.
Jimmy Crabtree (RHP, Kent State), Michael McDonough (LHP/Ohio State), Shay Smiddy (RHP, Louisville) and Jay Wilson (RHP, Georgia Tech) round out the top 10.
The Risers
With the numerous showcases we hold throughout the state, we see improvement from many prospects. In the Class of 2016's February rankings update, we see three guys who rose up the rankings in Scottie Seymour (Two-Way, Uncommitted, pictured right), Matt Phipps and Camden Clark.
Seymour has been a mainstay with PBR showcases this winter and has opened the eyes of all that work with PBR Ohio. The two-way prospect has dazzled on the mound this winter (mid-to-upper-80s) while also being a top MIF (6.82 60-yard dash, 86 SS Velo, 84 Exit Velo) at each of the showcases he has attended.
Phipps participated in the Final Event of the Winter and performered well. The 6-foot-3 catcher showcased a 1.97 pop time to go along with a 95 mph exit velocity.
Clark was a participant at the Unsigned Senior Games in November and looked the part of a nice two-way prospect. Clark sat in the low-to-mid-80s with the fastball on the mound. In the field, Clark had a velocity of 82 across the diamond as well as an 85 mph exit velocity.
The Newcomers
We see many new faces throughout the year during the numerous showcases we hold. In the Class of 2016, we saw a few prospects this winter go from unranked to ranked. Lucas Springer (pictured right), Andrew Wallace, Issac Hart and Cole Maxwell are just a few of those names.
Springer came to the Final Event of the Winter and stood out. The 5-foot-9 athletic prospect ran a 7.00 60-yard dash, had an 82 mph velocity in the outfield and had an 88 mph exit velocity.
Wallace was a participant at the Central Ohio Preseason Preview. The 6-foot-3 outfielder showed well in the outfield with a positional velocity of 83 mph to go along with a 7.16 60-yard dash.
Hart had a Winter Showcase Pass participant and made the most of it as the 6-foot-1 righty came to the Final Event of the Winter, Central Ohio Preseason Preview, as well as the Cincinnati Preseason Preview. On the mound, Hart sat in the mid-80s with a strong, athletic, projectable frame.
Maxwell was an Unsigned Senior Games participant in November The 6-foot-3 righty has a projectable frame and throws from a long, loose 3/4 slot in the low-to-mid-80s.
