LYNDHURST - No better place to look for that perfect mix of academics and athletics than in the northeast. That was what Nick Fletcher found with Holy Cross.

“I’ve always been looking for a school that could challenge me academically and athletically,” explained Fletcher. “Coming from Saint Ignatius and being a Jesuit and Catholic school, I felt Holy Cross was a good fit.”

The connection between the Saint Ignatius senior and Holy Cross began last fall.

“I was pinpointing schools,” reflected Fletcher. “I was looking at Bucknell, in the same league as Holy Cross, at a Showball Camp in New England and I scouted out where Holy Cross was. There are a couple of teachers at Saint Ignatius that went there and I have a couple friends there now.

“I knew the level of baseball there and I knew I could be competitive. They’ve been really competitive in the Patriot League (winning the championship in 2017) the last couple years so there’s a shot to go to regionals.”

Holy Cross head coach Greg DiCenzo saw Fletcher pitch at a showcase in Chicago.

“We followed up with emails and I did a camp next,” explained the 6-1 200-pound right-hander. “I went on a visit in July and did the campus. They followed up a week later and gave me an offer. A day later I took it.”

The winning pitcher in the Division I state semifinals in June, Fletcher has a lot to bring to the table for Holy Cross.

“They like my athleticism,” noted Fletcher, who threw five innings of three-hit shutout relief in a 4-3 13-inning win over Hilliard Darby in the state semis en route to Ignatius winning the D-I championship. “I can run well and I’m a good athlete on the mound. I’m a strike thrower and able to pound the zone.”

Fletcher enjoyed his visit to Holy Cross.
