Day 1 at the Underclass Area Code at the Urban Youth Academy in Compton, California got off to a great start with hoards of talented players stepping up on a big stage in front of college recruiters and professional scouts. With many of the players already being committed to universities, the event serves as an introduction for the young players to the MLB scouts...and they did not disappoint. With the hitters having three days to perform while the pitchers get just one, On the Hunt, takes a look at some of the arms that stood out on the day:

+ 2019 RHP Michael Doolin (Andrean HS, IN) showed why he had many scouts calling him the biggest riser of the summer. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Vanderbilt recruit has an athletic, pitcher’s frame, and worked with zero effort to deliver heavy fastballs to the bottom of the zone at 86-88. He spotted up to both sides of the plate while showing control of a tighter 10/4 breaking ball at 75-76. He also demonstrated above average feel for his changeup at 78-79. He did walk one batter in his three innings of work which one scout noted to be “the first walk I’ve seen from him in five outings.” Doolin looks every bit the part of a weekend starter at the next level, right now, and if his secondary pitches continue their upward path, he could be a player to remember during the ‘19 draft.

+ 2019 RHP Wesley Scott (Woodcrest Christian, CA), a Vanderbilt commit, exhibited an electric arm that allowed him to run his fastball up to 92 mph in the early morning start. He shows advanced athleticism in his 6-foot-1, 180-pound frame as he bounces around the mound, and his whippy-loose arm is aided by it. The quickness of his arm leads me to believe that there is even more velocity in there, especially as he continues to fill out and add strength. He got under his 10/4 breaking ball as his arm drifted lower than his normal ¾ slot, and caused the pitch to back up on him at times. However, with the way his arm works, and the hand speed being so quick through the ball, I’d expect a firmer slider to be in his future.

+ Uncommitted 2020 RHP/OF Nate Wohlgemuth (Owasso HS, OK) picked up right where he left off at the PBR Future Games by showing off the same, electric stuff. His fastball sat 91-93 as he dominated hitters in his first inning where he broke a bat and struck out two. He showcased his usual plus-changeup with late, fading action at 82-84. Wohlgemuth shows supreme confidence in the pitch, and will throw it in any count, at any time. His slider was firmer on the day at 79-82 than when I last saw him in Indianapolis, and he showed the ability to bury it to the back leg of left-handed hitters.
