2019 Future Games Preview - Team Connecticut

One of Prep Baseball Report’s premier events has a new home in 2019.

The eighth annual Future Games, held previously at Grand Park north of Indianapolis, will now be held at LakePoint in Cartersville, Ga. on July 31-Aug. 3. Top uncommitted prospects in the classes of 2021, 2022 and 2023 will participate in one of the most popular events each year.

There will be 28 teams, including Team Connecticut, with players representing 38 states plus the provinces of British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec in Canada. Each team will play three games the final three days of the event after all position players are put through a showcase workout on Wednesday, the first day of the Future Games.

Connecticut will face New Jersey on Thursday, followed by New York on Friday and Massachusetts in Saturday’s finale. All three games are slated to start at 9 a.m.

More than 200 colleges from across the country will be looking on as approximately 500 players participate in this year’s event. In 2018, a record 253 college and professional coaches and scouts were in attendance, six more than the previous season and around 100 more than the year prior.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for high school players to work out and play in front of 200 schools,” Connecticut Director of Scouting Trevor Brown said.

Carlos Pena is the lone returnee on this year’s Team Connecticut.

“The tournament is constructed so all schools can see all players, working off of 1-2 fields,” Brown explained. “The competition is extremely high, with play featuring future first rounders and some will that play in the MLB at some point. PBR does it correct.”

While only one player on last year’s Team Connecticut back, nine of the 21 players not returning have made a college commitment. Connecticut, Hartford, Sacred Heart, Merrimack College, Wofford, Boston College, Central Connecticut State, Rhode Island and Fairfield all have commitments from 2018 Team Connecticut players.

Dillon Lifrieri of Wilton High School in Connecticut was the 2016 MVP of the Future Games. Aaron Downs of Pella High School in Iowa was last year’s MVP while Mac Horvath of Rochester Century High School in Minnesota was the 2017 most valuable player.

Sam Carlson of Burnsville, Minn. was the 2015 MVP, while Duncan Pence of Farragut High School in Tennessee won in 2014, Nolan Watson of Lawrence North in Indiana in 2013, Colby Fitch of Hickman, Mo. in 2012 and Ryne Roper of Harrisburg, Ill. in 2011.

“The arms look to be high quality with solid infielders that hit from the left side,” Brown said of this year’s Team Connecticut. “This looks to be one of the better teams that I’ve brought out.”

Following is a look at Team Connecticut and the thoughts of each player heading into the Future Games.

Team Connecticut

James Aselta SS / RHP / Weston, CT / 2022

PBR: Give a short report on your spring baseball season and what you have done this summer.
Aselta:
During the spring season I played varsity baseball for Weston as a freshman. You had to earn your position ever practice and game. This summer I have been playing for BVSA in Stamford, Ct. I have been playing up on the 17U team and playing very well. I have played down in North Carolina at UNC which was awesome. For the season I have a .389 average and 18 RBIs.

PBR: What are your thoughts about being part of Team Connecticut for the Future Games?
Aselta:
It is an amazing opportunity for me as a player and a person. When I went to the Junior Future Games last year my goal was set to make it to the Future Games the following year. Being around all the top players is a rush. I believe the Future Games provides me the exposure I would never receive anywhere else. I know after the Junior Future Games I was noticed by two top D1 schools. I also enjoyed talking to the players after the games and meeting new friends. Some of the older players last year gave me some good advice that has helped me improve my game this year.

PBR: What are your expectations for the event?
Aselta:
My expectations for this event are just to enjoy myself, learn from the other players and play hard, not try to overdo too much and just present myself as best as possible.

Some PBR events that I participated in are the New England Top Prospect Games 6/2019 ( ranked in the top 5 for exit velocity) and the Junior Future Games 8/2018 (ranked in the top 10 for position and exit velocity).

For the summer I play for the Ocean State Makos. I am a starting pitcher and first baseman. We are doing well and have won some tournaments.

PBR: What are your thoughts about being part of Team Connecticut for the Future Games?
Brutti:
I am very excited to play for Team Connecticut in the Future Games. I played in the Junior Future Games last year and it was a big goal of mine to make it back this year to play in the Future Games. It will be a great experience to play with the best players from southern New England.

I attended one PBR showcase my freshman year but  I was uneducated with the recruiting process. After my freshman year I discussed with my high school coach on the importance of getting my name out. The fall of my sophomore year I attended one PBR showcase at the University of Rhode Island and gained a greater appreciation of showcases. Most recently, in June I went to a showcase at the Sportsplex in North Branford and found myself with tons of exposure. From that event I also received an invite to be a part of the Connecticut Future team.

We have been playing up in the older brackets and I feel I am handling the competition just fine.

It’s an honor to be selected to play for Team Connecticut. Ever since I heard of the PBR Future Games I wanted to be apart of it. I set a goal to be selected and that goal came true. I am very excited to be able to represent me, my family and my state in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

PBR: What are your expectations for the event?
Gaudreau:
I expect this event to be very beneficial for my recruiting process. I have heard nothing but positive feedback on the Future Games. I personally know a few players who have gone in years past and they have said nothing but positive reviews. I have heard of many kids receiving offers and talking to many different colleges, so I really would like to put my name out there and grab the attention of colleges around the country.

PBR: What PBR events have you participated in prior to the Future Games?
Gaudreau:
Every winter my summer team, the Rhode Island Prospects, holds a PBR Scout Day and I have participated in that the past three years. I have also done two other events, one being the Academic Games held at Brown University and just a few weeks ago I participated in the New England Top Prospect Games.

PBR: What colleges have you heard from and considering attending?

Declan O'Hara OF / Fairfield Warde, CT / 2021

PBR: Give a short report on your spring baseball season and what you have done this summer.
O'Hara:
I played my second year of varsity this past spring, playing left field for the most part, with a few games in center. I hit in the leadoff and nine hole, as it was more of a down season for me, only hitting .238 with an OBP of .377. I had a week to reset before summer started, which really helped. I had the opportunity to play for the 18U team this whole summer, which was great as I got to play kids older and better than me every game, challenging me to get better. So far this summer, I’ve played almost every game. I hit second in the lineup and play center field. I’ve been hitting a lot better with a .342 average through 30 games. I’ve also had more opportunity to knock in runs with 22 RBIs and 18 stolen bases on the year, while improving my OBP to .452.

PBR: What are your thoughts about being part of Team Connecticut for the Future Games?
O'Hara:
I am super excited to have the opportunity to play on Team Connecticut. Some of my teammates have played on it and have had a great experience with it. I’m honored to have been chosen to play with the best players from Connecticut and Rhode Island. I hope to learn a few things and will play as hard as possible to help best represent the state of Connecticut.

PBR: What are your expectations for the event?
O'Hara:
My expectations for the event are to run a solid 60-yard dash, hopefully in the 6.7 to 6.9 range like I’ve done before. I hope to also have about one to two hits a game, as the level of competition will be high I know. Overall, I’m looking to play as hard as I can all the time and use my athleticism to my advantage, as those are just two aspects that have helped me be successful in my career.

PBR: What PBR events have you participated in prior to the Future Games?
O'Hara:
I haven’t had the chance to do a PBR event yet this year but I’ve done two in the past. One was an indoor showcase in New Haven, Ct., and the other was an outdoor showcase at Central Connecticut State University.

PBR: What colleges have you heard from and considering attending?
O'Hara:
This summer I’ve had a great opportunity to play for the Connecticut Blue Jays 18U team as a 16-year-old. It’s helped me get a lot of good looks and experience against older players. I have three great coaches this year, and they’ve worked tirelessly to provide opportunities for me to play in front of college coaches. Some schools that I’ve been told by my coach are interested are UConn, UMass-Amherst, Lafayette, Siena and the University of Hartford. Four schools I’m interested in attending are the University of Rhode Island, Creighton University, University of Pittsburgh, and UConn. I do not have a favorite school yet, so I am looking for any school that has exercise science, kinesiology, or anything that leads to a Doctor in Physical Therapy Degree, as that is my desired grad degree after four years of exercise science or kinesiology. I will play wherever, as long as it has a solid program for my major. I am not picky about who I play for or with on the field. I really hope to have an opportunity to play at the next level.
