Cimarron at Bishop Gorman: Game Notes

Brett Harrison
Nevada Scouting Director

Opening Day vibes were electric as preseason #1 ranked Bishop Gorman faced off against a gritty Cimarron-Memorial squad. Uncommitted 2022 right hander, Tyler Avery, got the ball for the Gaels and after a leadoff walk, settled in as he worked quickly through the next three batters. In the bottom half they jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with a string of hits by Justin Crawford, Tyler Whitaker and Gavin Mez scoring UNLV recruit, Santino Panaro, who earn his way on via walk.

In the second, Gorman notched two more run after Santino Panaro, who lead off the inning with a line drive to centerfield, and Justin Crawford, who single through the 6-hole, both scored on a bases clearing triple over the centerfielders head.

Georgia Tech commit, Demitri Diamant, had himself a multi hit day including an RBI single to centerfield scoring standout sophomore, Gunnar Myro, extending the lead to 6-0 in the 3rd and eventually scoring himself on a sac fly by Freshman, Maddox Riske.

Avery continued to cruise through high first four innings of work allowing no hits while sitting 84-86 mph, commanding his secondary stuff that was working well off of his fastball.

But the Spartans did not go down with out a fight, after a string of quality at bats to load the bases in the top of the 5th, a clutch double by uncommitted 2021, Ethan Daniel, scoring all three runs and cutting into the Bishop Gorman lead bringing the score to 8-3.

In the 6th, Cimarron continued to apply the pressure after a leadoff walk was singled in by sophomore Jaryn McLaughlin, shrinking the lead to 8-4. A pair of single by Elie Kligman and Chase Duvall loaded the bases again for the Spartans with three hitter, Andrew Overland, at the plate. Overland laced what looked like a single to right center field that could have cleared the bases, but was snatched by a full extension jumping grab by Maddox Riske.

Top ranked Uncommitted 2021, Elie Kligman, may not have had his best stuff on the mound, but he did his part at the plate going 2 for 2 with a pair of singles to right field while showing quality place discipline as he drew two walks to go with knocks.

The Gaels were able to shut the door in the top of the 7th behind right hander Payton Riske, who relieved Avery and carried the load the rest of the way, sealing the victory for Gorman on Opening Day
