May 16, 2019
LAS VEGAS, NV – The 4A State tournament has taken on a bit of a different look in 2019. The new six team format includes two Northern Nevada teams (Reno, Bishop Manogue) and four Southern Nevada teams (Desert Oasis, Basic, Las Vegas and Arbor View). On Wednesday, the format utilized two sites (Centennial HS and Bishop Gorman HS). At Centennial, Bishop Manogue took on Arbor View with the winner slated to play Desert Oasis. At Bishop Gorman, Las Vegas opened up against Basic with the winner advancing to the nightcap against Reno.
In the first game of the 4A State Championship tournament the Las Vegas Wildcats took on the Basic Wolves. The Wildcats sent ’19 Daniel Jimenez to the mound to face ’19 Shane Spencer of the Wolves. Both hurlers performed admirably with Jimenez throwing a complete game shutout, scattering four hits, walking just one. Spencer threw the entire game for the Wolves, giving up six hits and two runs. The Wildcats pushed a run across in both the fourth and fifth innings and Jimenez made it standup. Wildcats’ leadoff man, “21 Joel Lindahl paced the offense with two hits, including a big two out single that plated the first run. Catcher, Leonel Anaya added an insurance run in the 5th. Wildcat centerfielder, ’21 Dalten Silet lent some standout defensive plays, including running down a “would be” RBI and extra base hit off the bat of ’20 Zach Hose (Basic).
Across town at Centennial, the visiting Bishop Manogue Miners lead the Arbor View Aggies headed into the bottom of the fifth 7-4. The Aggies erupted for an 11-run 5th. The Miners would scratch a couple of runs drawing to a 15-9 finish. Aggies’ ’19 Nick Cornman, ’21 Garrett Cutting, ’19 Jesse Pierce, and ’20 Payton Brooks each had multiple hit games, including homers for Cutting and Pierce.
After beating Basic, Las Vegas appeared ready for the double header. Daniel Jimenez had preserved the Wildcats pitching staff, allowing '19 Nate Freimuth to start against the Reno Huskies. The Huskies sent left-hander, ’19 John Barry to the hill. The Huskies struck first with a sac fly from catcher, ’20 Lane Oliphant. Reno starter, Barry held the Wildcats scoreless through 3. Las Vegas plated a run in the 4th, but the Huskeis answered with three in the bottom half. Reno tacked on one in the 5th as well as 3 more in the sixth. ’20 Skylar Hales came on in relief for two innings before giving way to closer, ’19 Ryan Hess.
