Wladyka Baseball: Pitcher's Showcase Top Performers

Wladyka Baseball had its annual pitcher's showcase in February. There was tons of talent in attendance. Here are some of the notes on the top performers.

Ryan Ramsey LHP / Pascack Hills, NJ / 2019Maryland recruit. Ramsey has a lean, athletic build at 6-feet, 180-pounds. Fastball sat 85-88 with a long, loose arm. Showcased a curveball with sharp 1/7 tilt with tight spin and a changeup with armside run at 78-79 with fastball arm action for strikes. Methodical, fluid delivery into a tall, athletic balance point. Lands slightly closed on foot strikes with a high front side as he goes down the mound. Creates extension on release. One of the top 2019s in the state.

Joey DeChiaro LHP / Hunterdon Central, NJ / 2019
DeChiaro is Old Dominion recruit. Strong 6-foot-2 175-pound frame with uniform strength throughout. Fastball sat 84-86 with heavy arm side sink and boring action. Throws swing and miss plus changeup with FB arm action and arm side sink at 78 mph. CB is hard and sharp with two plan depth at 76 mph. Young, explosive arm and body with high ceiling. Commands three pitches from low 3/4 slot. One of the top 2019s in the state.

Joshua O'Neill RHP / Nutley , NJ / 2019Stony Brook recruit. O'Neill has a broad shouldered, athletic build at 5-foot-11 180-pounds. Fastball sat 86-88 with late, heavy life from a high-3/4 slot. Showcased a big 11/5 curveball with tight spin at 67-70 and a changeup with armside run at 78-79. Also flashed a cutter with smaller 10/4 break at 80-82. Up tempo delivery into a high athletic balance point. Creates leverage with uphill shoulders as he goes down the mound. Shorter, quicker arm action.

Jacob Gomez LHP / Rutherford, NJ / 2020Old Dominion recruit. Gomez has an athletic build at 5-foot-10 165-pounds with room to fill out. Fastball sat 83-85 MPH with a quick arm action from a higher-3/4 slot. Sharp, downer breaking ball with tight spin at 68-72 for strikes, and a changeup with heavy armside run at 70-73. Creates power from strong lower half as he descends down the mound. Hides ball well behind body, tough to pick up. Level shoulders at foot strike with upper body slightly closed. Shows elasticity in torso that creates a "whip" action. Ball comes out clean. One of the top 2020s in NJ.

Mike Velez RHP / Union, NJ / 2019Wagner recruit. Velez has a broad shouldered, athletic build at 6-foo-1 200-pounds. Fastball sat 86-90 with late life and armside sink and run. Shorter, quicker arm action. Curveball showed 11/5 bite at 73-76 for strikes and a changeup with heavy armside fade at 77-80. Up tempo delivery into a strong, athletic balance point. Drives off back leg to descend down the mound. Lower, downhill shoulders at foot strike. Finishes with firm, strong landing leg and slightly closed.

Deenae Sujak LHP / Old Tappan, NJ / 2018Sujak has a lanky, athletic build at 5-foot-10 165-pounds. Burst on to the scene at the event with an up tempo delivery and a fastball that topped at 85 and sat mostly 83-85. Big velocity jump since we last saw him in winter 2017. Breaking ball showed 1/7 bite at 71-74 for strikes and a changeup with armside run at 78-79. Truly "gets-the-ball-and-throws-it" – Sujak wasted no time during his session to raise eybrows with his arm. One of the top uncommitted players in the state.

Zachary Fernandez RHP / Union, NJ / 2019Fernandez has a lean, athletic build at 6-feet 150-pounds. One of the top uncommitted 2019s in the state. Fastball topped at 86 MPH and sat mostly 84-86 with a smooth, athletic arm action. Everything about Fernandez's windup and delivery is fluid. Breaking ball was 75-77 with 11/5 tilt and a changeup showed some armside fade as well. Fernandez has some projection and plenty of room to fill out, but his arm works. Mechanics are sound and landing is firm and athletic.

John-Biagio Modugno RHP / Don Bosco Prep, NJ / 2019Modugno has a wiry-athletic frame at 6-foot-6 180-pounds. One of the top uncommitted 2019s in the state. Modugno sat 81-84 with a long, loose arm action. Stood out with his command of a sharp breaking ball with 11/5 shape at 70-73 and a changeup with heavy armside fade at 78-79. Modugno maintains his height throughout his delivery and uses it to his advantage to get on top of hitters. High-3/4 slot. Modugno oozes projection on the mound and still has room to grow into frame.

Devin Rivera RHP / Don Bosco Prep, NJ / 2020Rivera has a broad shouldered, athletic build at 6-foot-1 188-pounds. Fastball say 82-84 with armside sink and run. Showcased an 11/5 curveball at 67-71 for strikes and a changeup with fade action at 73-75. Up tempo delivery into a bent, athletic balance point. Drives down the mound using strength in lower half. Level shoulders at foot strike. High-3/4 slot with long, loose arm action. One of the top 2020 arms in NJ.

Mike Ruggieri RHP / Northern Highlands, NJ / 2020Ruggieri has a broad shouldered, full frame at 6-foot-5 240-pounds. Fastball sat 82-85 MPH from a high-3/4 slot. Breaking ball showed 11/5 spin at 71-74 and changeup flashed some armside sink as well. Ball jumps out of hand on release. Easy, repeatable mechanics with a firm, strong balance point. Will fade off to first base side on release occasionally. A lot to like about this 2020.

Jimmy Kemp RHP / Hudson Catholic, NJ / 2020Kemp has a broad shouldered, athletic frame at 6-foo-1 215-pounds. Fastball sat 82-85 MPH throughout his outing. Featured a curveball with 11/5 spin at 68-72 MPH and a straight changeup at 72-73. Tall balance point with uphill shoulders at foot strike. High-3/4 slot with long arm action. Creates extension into landing leg. Lands square to home plate showing exceptional body control for age. High riser in 2020 rankings.

Nick Scalabrini RHP / Ramapo, NJ / 2019Scalabrini has a lanky, athletic build at 6-foot-3 175-pounds. Fastball topped at 85 MPH and sat mostly 82-85. Curveball showed sharp 12/6 break at 72-75 and changeup showed late armside run at 78-80. Tall balance point – tall/fall type pitcher down the mound. Level shoulders at foot strike. High-3/4 slot with shorter arm action. Shows some projection with build and curveball shape as well.

Mark Alday LHP / St. Mary's (Ruth.), NJ / 2019Long, lean, strong frame at 6-foot-3 160-pounds with room to add bulk. Quick-actioned frame with loose, low 3/4 arm slot. Throws sinking 2 SMFB at 83 MPH and can get in on RH hitter with boring fastball. Fastball sat 80-83. Hides ball well with quick front side and herky-jerky delivery. SL is hard and sharp with diagonal movement and can throw to both sides of the plate at 72 MPH. Changeup shows arm speed and depth at the plate at 75 mph. Projectable body and fast arm. All pitches have sinking movement and makes it tough on hitters.

Michael Rodriguez RHP / Pascack Hills, NJ / 2019Rodriguez has an athletic build at 6-foot 169-pounds. Fastball topped at 83 MPH and sat mostly 80-83 in his session of work. Over-the-top slot with a short arm action. Curveball showed 11/5 spin for strikes and flashed a changeup with fade as well. Firm balance point – tall/fall type pitcher going down the mound. Level shoulders at foot strike, land square with foot straight.

Marco Siracusa LHP / Bergen Catholic, NJ / 2019Siracusa has a wiry-athletic build at 5-foot-11 155-pounds. Fastball topped at 82 and sat mostly 80-82 throughout his outing of work. Showcased advanced feel for a curveball for strikes at 68-70 MPH with sharp 1/7 spin and a changeup for strikes at 73-75. Up tempo delivery into an athletic and slightly bent balance point. Level shoulders at first foot strike. Lands closed with landing foot facing toward first base dugout.

Andrew Weland RHP / Don Bosco Prep, NJ / 2018Weland is one of the top uncommitted 2018s in the state. Broad shouldered, athletic build at 5-foot-10 190-pounds. Fastball topped at 82 MPH and sat mostly 78-82 and filled up the strike zone. Short, compact mechanics into an athletic balance point. High-3/4 slot with uphill shoulders at foot strike. Clean, loose arm action. Flashed a curveball with 11/5 action for strikes and a split-change with sinking action at 71-72 for strikes as well.

Zack Oswald LHP / St. Peter's Prep, NJ / 2020Oswald has a lean, projectable frame at 6-foot-2 175-pounds. Fastball topped at 81 MPH and sat mostly 79-81. Showed feel for a 1/7 breaking ball at 66-68 and a strong changeup with armside fade at 75-77. Oswald looks the part of a pitcher with a high ceiling – big, athletic frame with room to fill out and a long, clean arm action. High-3/4 slot. High riser in the 2020 rankings.

Joseph Connington LHP / West Essex, NJ / 2019Long, lean, athletic frame at 6-foot-3 160-pounds with room to add bulk. Pitches from low 3/4 arm slot. Throws sinking 2 SMFB from 78-80 mph and can get in on RH hitter with 4SMFB fastball. Effortless delivery with clean, repeated mechanics. Showcases top to bottom curveball at 64 to 66 mph and can throw to both sides of the plate. SL is commanded well with diagonal movement and can throw to both sides of the plate ranging 67-68 mph. Changeup shows arm speed and depth at the plate at 72-74 mph. Projectable body and quick arm. All pitches have sinking movement and commands down in the zone.

Matthew Gibney RHP / St. Joseph Regional, NJ / 2019Gibney has a muscular, broad shouldered frame at 6-foot-2 210-pounds. Fastball topped at 85 MPH and sat mostly 82-85. Showed a curveball with 11/5 bite at 66-70 and a straight changeup at 71-74. High front side at first foot strike. Uphill shoulders help him create some leverage down in the strike zone. Longer arm action at hand break, then brings up straight above ear as he descends down the mound. Lands slightly opened with a spin-off to first base side of rubber. Arm recoils on finish.

Parker Stemkowski RHP / Nyack, NY / 2019Stemkowski has a broad shouldered, athletic frame at 6-foot-2 220-pounds. Fastball topped at 82 MPH and sat mostly 80-82 throughout his outing. Showcased a sharp 12/6 breaking ball at 70-71 and a straight changeup as well at 76-78 MPH. Short arm action with level shoulders going down the mound. Creates some extension over lead leg on finish. Lands square but front foot will open toward first base side of rubber, causing him to fall of slightly to that side.
