This past Friday Fredericksburg Christian travelled to Powhatan for a scrimmage. It was a cold windy evening and some velocities were down, but it was easy to see the athleticism of FCS and a strong young core of players for Powhatan. On Saturday I travelled to Hanover to see come of the state's top committed and uncommitted players across a few different classes as well as had the opportunity to see King's Christian out of New Jersey.
Fredericksburg Christian
Vincent DiLeonardo OF/1B Fredericksburg Christian 2021 Elon
Athletic frame with some physicality. At the plate starts from an open athletic stance, leg kick to stride, and foot gets down on time. First at bat got his hands on plane with a high fastball and hit a line drive into center field. Next at bat recognized a breaking ball and hands stayed back before firing a single into deep center field. Shows some solid offensive promise and gap to gap power potential.
Elijah Pinckney SS/2B Fredericksburg Christian 2021
Compact athletic frame. Had solid lateral range at shortstop and a quick exchange and release. Flashed ability to throw from multiple arm slots with accuracy across. At the plate it was a short compact swing and is a contact line drive approach.
Sabin Roane 3B Fredericksburg Christian 2020 Old Dominion
Athletic frame with room to add strength. Rangy defender with average arm strength across. At the plate has an open athletic stance, hands load in rhythm, and a short level path to the ball. Line drive tendency and ability to stretch an extra base with high end speed on the bases. Had a RBI single to right and also lined out to left field.
Joel Tarrh RHP Fredericksburg Christian 2020 UNC-Pembroke
Tarrh possesses a projectable frame with some athleticism. On the mound he sat 79-82 mph and everything moved. Consistent cutting action on the fastball seemed to get a lot of bad contact and some swings and misses. Breaking ball had 11/5 shape at 73-74 mph and flashed solid arm speed on the pitch. He was efficient around the zone and the fastball worked to both sides and both ends of the zone.
Powhatan
Josh Boelt SS/2B Powhatan 2022
Athletic defender that will be a solid addition up the middle of the field for the Indians. Has solid lateral range and average arm strength across. At the plate started in a slightly open athletic stance. Strides in landing closed and hands loaded in rhythm. Has some balance in the swing and hits it where it is pitched. Had a line out to center that was barreled up well and his next at bat he pulled the hands in and turned on an inside pitch for a deep fly out to left field.
Brandon Eike RHP/SS Powhatan 2020 UNC
Impressive first day for Eike. On the mound he sat 88-90 mph with the fastball in the first two innings. In the third the velo sat 87-88 mph. Command was strong to both sides of the plate in the first two innings. Flashed ability to throw breaking ball for strike in any count. Breaking ball had 11/5 shape at 73-75 mph. Changeup is a really solid secondary pitch at 81-82 mph and ability to locate to both sides of the plate. Threw it multiple times to the glove side to right handed hitters. At the plate he took the first pitch he saw over right center field fence and his next at bat he hit a double to deep right center on a line. Advanced barrel awareness and displays power to all fields.
Hayden Wasson LHP Powhatan 2022
Athletic projectable frame. On the mound velocity was down just a touch from when we saw him last, but as noted it was a very windy cold night and I expect it to pick up some. Fastball was 76-78 mph with arm side run and worked well to the arm side. Breaking ball was 66-68 mph with 1/7 shape. At the plate has a simple efficient stride, short level path to the ball, and stayed inside well. Barreled up a hard hit ball right at the second baseman and had a ground ball to the left side in two of his at bats on the night.
Hanover
Cole Elrod 3B/RHP Hanover 2023
Strong athletic frame with plenty of projection left to it for the freshman. Two way potential. At the plate had solid feel for the barrel, has some power potential to the pull side, and is an above average runner. In their first game Elrod turned around a 87 mph fastball on the inner half and flew out to deep left. Pulled the hands in and attacked the ball out front. Defensively solid defender at third with above average arm strength across and accuracy on throws. On the mound Elrod sat 77-79 mph and had some arm side run. Breaking ball was 65-68 mph with bigger 11/5 break. Definitely a name to keep an eye on going forward.
Anthony Gabello RHP/1B Hanover 2022
Strong frame with some projection left to it. Broad shoulders and strong back. Pitches with some effort and intent. Quick arm speed throwing from a three-quarter arm slot. Fastball sat 86-88 mph and had carry through the zone with a spin rate that generally stayed between 2200-2350 and got up to 2444 once. Breaking ball was 65-69 mph with a 11/5 shape and 2200+ spin rate. Fastball got some swings and misses in his two innings of work.
Athletic left handed arm. Body moves quickly down the mound and works with some pace. Quick short arm action from a low three-quarter arm slot. Fastball was 82-85 mph and had some arm side run at times. Slider was 72-74 mph and had two different shapes. Occasionally had a slurve look with 2/8 shape and flashed a harder tighter slider with 1/7 shape, but showed ability to get both over for strikes.
Frank W. Cox
Ethan Anderson C/3B/1B Cox 2022 UVA
About as physical of a frame as you will see especially on a sophomore. Switch hitting catcher that has advanced barrel and zone awareness and does not swing and miss much. Similar stance from both sides. Sets up open and strides forward landing on line. Hands load back in rhythm and has some uphill tilt to the swing. Led off the first game with a double down the line, had a sac fly to deep right in his second at bat, and later on in the day stayed inside a fastball and barreled it up right at the short stop. Behind the plate shows some hand strength at the bottom of the zone and on pops it is a quick exchange and short arm action to release.
Josh Grosz RHP Cox 2020 East Carolina
Long athletic frame that still has some filling out to do. Tall upright delivery, down and out stride, and lands slightly closed. Short arm circle and quick arm speed from a three-quarter arm slot. Fastball was 86-88 mph on the day and had solid run especially to the arm side of the plate that got in on right handers. Slider was sharp and late at 75-78 mph and had above average feel for the pitch. Changeup is a plus pitch that paired really well with the fastball. Arm speed and intent on the changeup at 81 mph with some occasional late diving action. Is going to be a frontline arm for Cox this year and a lot of promise going forward.
Athletic frame with some projection left to it, standing around 6-foot-2. On the mound shoulders are uphill and closed moving towards the plate, engages backside well, and has an average arm circle. Throws from an over-the-top arm slot. Fastball played downhill with occasional arm side run and worked to both sides of the plate. Breaking ball showed a tight 12/6 shape at 68-69 mph and was a solid secondary pitch.
Compact athletic frame with two-way potential. On the mound Slevin works with a controlled pace. Strides down the mound landing closed. Arm path is short and throws from a high three-quarter arm slot. Fastball was 82-84 mph and had really nice arm side run with some sink to it. Breaking ball had 11/5 shape and depth to it. At the plate has a toe tap stride and lands slightly closed. Hands are short to the ball and the swing is compact with line drive approach. Hit for high average and showed ability to get down the line making him a threat on the bases.
King's Christian
Chase Cooper LHP/OF King's Christian 2020 Rutgers State-Camden
Thin athletic frame with room to add strength. Easy low effort delivery. High leg lift to balance, hips and shoulders show slight elevation down the mound, and lands on line. Full arm circle and throws with a loose arm from a three-quarter arm slot. Filled up the strike zone with two pitches. Fastball was 77-79 mph with some arm side run. Breaking ball had a bigger 1/7 shape at 64-68 mph with feel for the zone.
Joe Morrissey 3B/RHP King's Christian 2021
Strong physical frame. Really stood out defensively where he made multiple plays on the move, laterally and coming forward. Displayed above average arm strength across and accuracy from multiple arm slots. Offensively Morrissey has some power potential in the swing and frame with a slight uphill path. Had a line drive single in their second game of the day. On the mound Morrissey displayed some two-way potential. Normal effort to the delivery. Fastball was 80-82 mph from a three-quarter arm slot. Breaking ball had 11/5 shape at 65-68 mph and changed multiple planes.
Kaleb Willis OF King's Christian 2021
Compact athletic frame with some twitch to his actions. Plenty of range in the outfield. Moves well on the bases and out of the box. At the plate it is a short compact swing. Shows some doubles power at the plate with solid feel for the barrel. Led off their first game with a long double to deep left. Works at bats and battled counts when he got behind.
