Middletown South and CBA Advance to Shore Conference Finals

RED BANK -- Yesterday the Semifinals of the Shore Conference Tournament were held at Red Bank’s Count Basie Park, home of this summer’s PBR NJ State Games. In the first game, Middletown South defeated Toms River South 8-0.

Senior lefty Ian Scheuer (Manhattan) threw a gem for the Eagles - complete game four-hitter, striking out four and walking two. The Eagles busted the game open in the sixth inning, when TRS starter Trevor Wagner (Monmouth) loaded the bases with nobody out. Middletown South put a six spot on the board in the inning, and saw three different TRS pitchers before the inning ended. The big knock came from C Zach Schild (Monmouth) in the inning, a bases clearing double.

Tom Gannon had two hits and two runs scored while senior SS Johnny Zega (Monmouth) had a hit and scored two runs. Wagner had two hits of his own to try to help the cause for the Indians, but TRS could not string together anything off the stellar performance of Scheuer.

In the night cap at Count Basie, CBA held on to defeat RBC 5-3 in the second Semifinal game.
CBA got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth. After RBC lefty Justin Liggett retired the first two of the inning, number three batter and opposing starter Luca Dalatri was intentionally walked, and number four batter Nick Hohenstein was hit by a pitch. DH Brian Golden then walked and Lafayette bound RHP/1B Kenny Campbell laced a bases clearing double to center.

 

RBC would answer with one in the fifth on the North Carolina-bound Dalatri, who coming into last night’s game had an ERA of 0.02 and had only walked two batters  the whole year. Liggett led off with a single and was eventually driven in on SS Evan Madigan’s RBI single with two outs.

 

CBA would put two more on the board in the sixth on a Golden RBI single and a sac fly by Campbell, his fourth RBI of the game.

 

Things would get dicey in the seventh, as Dalatri was sent back out to close out the victory. Liggett again led off with a single, his third hit of the day - and 1B Mike Veit would single as well. With one out, number nine batter Aiden Supp walked to load the bases. Madigan came up big again with a line drive two RBI single through the right side. With the score 5-3, junior CF Dom Caraballo would walk to load the bases again for the Caseys. With two down, catcher Doug Facendo hit a chopper up the middle that looked like it would squeak through, but CBA SS Sal Rinaldi scooped it up and fired to first to get Facendo by a half step, a game saving play to end it.

Dalatri, arguably the top pitcher in the state, uncharacteristically walked two batters in the seventh to double his walk total for the year to just four. The Caseys were able to make some noise in the seventh to take advantage, but a great play by Rinaldi made it too little too late.

CBA will face Middletown South in the Finals of the Shore Conference Tournament this weekend.
