2018 Future Games: Team Carolina Catchers

Brandon Hall
North Carolina Director of Scouting

August 1 - 4 saw over 500 of the top uncommitted, underclass players in the country converge on Grand Parks in Indianapolis, IN.  North and South Carolina were represented by Team Carolina at the event, featuring 18 players from the two states.

Throughout the four days, players were tested, tracked, and watched as they went through workouts and played in game situations.  Team Carolina had several standout performances through the week and we continue the individual player analysis with two primary catchers from North Carolina who represented Team Carolinas at the 2018 PBR Future Games.

2018 Team Carolina - Catchers

Drew Bryan C / RHP / Southern Lee, NC / 2020

Sturdy 5-foot-11, 190 pounds with a strong lower half.  Advanced defensively with an above average arm that has elite accuracy in workouts and in game action.  Good bend in the hips. Easy setup and presents the target well. Arms tend to tick up a bit in their pitch-ability with Bryan receiving.  High transfer across the chest to a quick release and over-the-top slot. Positional velocity of 80 mph from the crouch with pop times ranging 2.00 - 2.09 in the workout.  Game pop times mirrored the workout at 2.06 and 2.10. Played some at a corner outfield with decent presence defensively. Ran a 7.58 sixty but tends to have a better first 20 yards that last 20 yards.  Right handed hitter is tall and balanced. Vertical bat. Rhythmic weight shift back with a small leg kick. Small stride. Direct path working for extension. Pull side tendency. Simple and repeats the swing.  Strength over quickness in swing right now. Good balance. Strength is present in the hands and he handles the barrel. Exit velocity peaked at 89 mph off the barrel.

Chet Sikes C / 3B / Wesleyan Christian Academy, NC / 2020

Some physicality in a 6-foot, 185 pound frame with strength in the lower half.  Decent athlete, showed an ability to play a corner infield position and ran a 7.20 sixty.  Easy actions receiving behind the plate. Strong hands, handles the bottom of the zone. Good bend in his hips.  Extremely quick exchange across his chest to a short arm action and over-the-top slot. Feet work to gain ground through the transition.  From the crouch throws peaked at 78 mph out of the hand. Pop times ranged in workouts at 1.98 - 2.01. One game pop of 1.97 on a breaking ball elevated that he received almost standing.  At 3B, average feet and the hips can play high but the hands work with some ease. Funnels to the midsection to exchange. Loads the arm up with long footaction, getting to an over-the-top slot.  Positional velocity of 84 mph across the field. Right handed hitter. Tall and balanced with a relaxed bat posture. Small load in the hands and a short stride gets to an easy launch position. Good barrel awareness.  Average bat speed with strength through the zone. Works for extension. Pull side tendency but stayed on balls in game situations. Some uphill leverage through the swing as the hands work to finish high. Exit velocity peaked at 91 mph off the barrel.
