Scout Day: Prodigy - Catchers Analysis

Prep Baseball Report Missouri held the Prodigy Scout Day Scout Day on February 23 at the Prodigy Baseball Facility in Parkville, Missouri. Nearly forty players participated in the 2022 to 2018 classes.

Player profiles have been updated with running times and velocities along with a video of their performance. 

Players can now updated their profiles with a 
ProspectPlus subscription, while scouts and recruiters can add players on ScoutPlus.

Here is a closer look at the catchers from the event, listed in alphabetical order.

Catchers

Patrick Compton C / 3B / Oak Park, MO / 2020

Compton is a 5-foot-11, 175-pound, right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2020 class. He ran a 5.10 home-to-first and posted an exit velocity of 87 mph. During hitting evaluations, balanced set up, minimal load, some rhythm with hands, slightly closed off with stride, high finish with hands, mostly pull side contact during round. Defensively behind the plate, Compton has an athlete set up, fluid foot work, quick transfer to release, short arm action, over the top release, positional velo of 72 mph, mostly accurate throws

Logan Helman C / 1B / Platte County, MO / 2020

Helman is a big bodied 6-foot-1, 215-pound, right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2020 class. He ran a 4.81 home-to-first and posted an exit velocity of 82 mph. During hitting evaluations, Helman has a simple load with minimal movement, in line stride, balanced swing, level bat path. Defensively behind the plate, quick transfer to release, fluid footwork, over the top release, positional velo of 64 mph, mostly accurate throws

Benjamin Jones C / OF / Liberty, MO / 2020

Jones is a 5-foot-9, 175-pound, switch hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2020 class. At the event he ran a 4.46 home-to-first and posted an exit velocity of 93 mph on the left side and 86 mph on the right side. During hitting evaluations, Jones shows a balanced swing with quick bat speed from both sides of the plate, from the left side he uses a reverse toe tap to load, loose hands, extensions through the baseball, showed pop to mainly pull side, while on the right side uses a small leg lift to load, loose hands, barrel control, balanced swing, gap-to-gap pop. Defensively, athletic actions, fluid footwork, quick arm, high three quarter release, soft hands, very accurate throws.

Blake Morrow C / OF / Park Hill, MO / 2021

Morrow is a 5-foot-9, 180-pound, left-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2021 class. He ran a 4.64 home-to-first and posted an exit velocity of 89 mph. During hitting evaluations, Morrow starts in an athletic stance, quiet load, in line stride, very quick hands, ball jumps off barrel, showed high quality gap-to-gap contact during round. Defensively, athletic set up, clean transfers, quick arm, high three-quarter release, positional velo of 78 mph, mostly accurate throws.

Alex Schmitz RHP / 3B / Park Hill South, MO / 2020

Schmitz is a 6-foot-1, 205-pound, right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2020 class. He ran a 4.77 home-to-first and posted an exit velocity of 81 mph. During batting practice, starts upright, high set up with hands, quiet load, in line stride, leverages up front side, high finish with hands, produced hard contact during round. Behind the plate, athletic set up, clean transfers, quality footwork, over the top release, positional velo of 70 mph, mostly accurate throws.

Benit Thacker C / OF / Staley, MO / 2021

Thacker is a 5-foot-11, 180-pound, right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2021 class. He ran a 4.57 home-to-first and posted an exit velocity of 82 mph. During batting practice, Thacker starts with an open stance, quiet load with some rhythm to hands, in line stride, quick bat, in line stride, extension through baseball, showed hard contact during round. Behind the plate, quality foot work, clean transfers, short arm action, three-quarter release, fairly accurate throws.

Ethan Woodfine C / 3B / Raymore-Peculiar, MO / 2021

Woodfine is a 5-foot-10, 145-pound, right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2021 class. He ran a 4.72 home-to-first and posted an exit velocity of 80 mph. During batting practice, starts with an open stance, in line and longer stride, toe tap load, level bat path, controlled and repeatable swing. Behind the plate, athletic set up, quality foot work, clean arm action, three-quarter release, positional velo of 70 mph, mostly accurate throws.
