Building Champions Scout Day: Catcher's Analysis

On January 27, Prep Baseball Report - Kansas/Missouri held the Building Champions Scout Day.  Nearly 50 players attended in the 2021 to 2018 classes. 

Players can now updated their profiles with a ProspectPlus subscription, while scouts and recruiters can add players on the ScoutPlus dashboard.

Player profiles have been updated with profile picture, running times, velocities, and videos.  Today will take a closer look at the catchers from the event. Players are listed in alphabetical order below.

Catchers

Daniel Bebee C / RHP / Shawnee Mission South, KS / 2020

Bebee is a 6-foot-2 170-pound right-haded hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class. Bebee ran a 7.56 60 and has a 79 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, starts slightly open, pre-pitch rhythm in hands, controlled leg kick, body stays under control, in line stride, level path, stays on ball after contact, gap to gap approach.  Behind the plate, pop times between 1.98 to 2.03-seconds, 77 mph positional velocity, offset feet in set up, over the top release, quick jab step and exchange, footwork creates momentum to throw, mostly accurate throws. 

Evan Borberg C / RHP / Shawnee Mission Northwest, KS / 2020

Borberg is a 5-foot-7 165-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class. He ran a 8.31 60 and has a 79 mph exit velocity. At the plate, open stance, loads against back side with quiet hands, in line stride, accelerates to contact, swing produced mostly line drives to middle of the field.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.01 and 2.10-seconds, 70 mph positional velocity, square set up in feet, quick exchange, short over the top releasee on time with footwork, quick and soft hands, mostly accurate throws.

Jake Dolesh C / OF / Blue Valley Northwest, KS / 2020

Dolesh is a 5-foot-10 145-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 7.96 60 and has an exit velocity of 82 mph.  At the plate, balanced set up, simple and repeatable swing mechanics, quiet hands, loads against back side with controlled leg lift, consistent hard contact gap to gap, feel for the barrel. Behind the plate, pop times between 2.15 and 2.21-seconds, 71 mph positional velocity, staggered set in feet, high three quarters arm slot, quick transfer and throw with momentum in footwork, throws flash carry with accuracy, athletic build with room to add strength.

Gus Freeman C / OF / Blue Valley North, KS / 2019

Freeman is a 6-foot 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.39 60 and a has an 85 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, starts in a thin and balanced stance, hands walk away from in line stride, stays on ball after contact, level bat path.  Behind the plate, pop times between 1.94 and 2.20, 72 mph positional velocity, slightly staggered in set up, short over the top release, quick footwork on time with exchange, mostly accurate throws with carry.

Cole Moore C / 3B / Mill Valley, KS / 2019

Moore is a durable 5-foot-11 185-pound left-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.28 60 and has an 82 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced stance, no wasted movement in hands to load, short in line stride, quick hands, hard middle to pull side contact during batting practice, short and compact swing.  Behind the plate, 78 mph positional velocity, 1.98 to 2.03 pop times, over the top release, fluid exchange on time with footwork, aggressive through the catch with momentum, throws are accurate with carry.

Riley Rader C / 1B / Rockhurst, MO / 2019

Rader is a 6-foot-1 200-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 8.20 60 and has an 82 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced set up, short in line stride, level bat path though extension, body stays under control, no wasted movement, gap to gap line drives.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.10 to 2.20-seconds, 68 mph positional velocity, thin and offset set up in feet, quick exchange, over the top release, fluid actions.

Auggie Viles C / 2B / Rockhurst, MO / 2021

Viles is a 5-foot-11 186-pound switch-hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2021 class.  He ran a 7.70 60 and a has an 82 mph exit velocity on the left side and a 76 mph exit velo from the right side. At the plate, starts slightly closes from left side, minimal load, attacks ball, middle to pull side contact, quick hands and bat speed, hits with leverage off back side, similar swing from right side with more in line direction, no wasted movements.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.00 and 2.03-seconds, 70 mph positional velocity, short high three quarters release, quick exchange, thin and offset feet in set up, transfer and feet in sync, throws are mostly accurate

Ivan Witt C / Fort Scott , KS / 2021

Witt is a 5-foot-11 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2021 class.  He ran a 7.75 60 and has an 82 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, balanced set up, short in line stride, quick and compact swing, minimal load, gap to gap approach, feel for the barrel.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.02 and 2.15, 71 mph positional velocity, square feet in set up, sit low, flexible, quick transfer and throw,  over the top release, mostly accurate throws. 

Tucker Woods C / 2B / Blue Springs South, MO / 2020

Woods is a 5-foot-8 140-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 7.50 60 and has a 76 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, slight pre-pitch rhythm, balanced set up, short in line stride, loose and quick hands creating bat whip, gap to gap approach, repeats swing, Behind the plate, pop times between 2.06 and 2.16-seconds, 71 mph positional velocity, sit low with base offset feet, short over the top release on time with quick jab step to throw. Throws are mostly accurate.
