Truman Thomas gives up two hits and strikes out 10 to lead the Southern Bulldogs to their second state championship in as many years.
It was a pitcher’s duel through the first four innings as Thomas and Eastern Tech’s starter Jack Young went head to head, giving up no runs and only one hit apiece. The fifth inning is when the bulldogs broke the game open.
JC Dilts got it started with a one out single to right. After a walk and a fly out, runners were at first and second with two out and Brady Waters up to bat. Water would drive a single to right field scoring Dilts and making the score 1-0. Thomas was put on base to load the bases with two out and a wild pitch would score a run making it 2-0. Another walk would load the bases and junior DJ Coleman hit a 2-RBI single up the middle to increase the Bulldog lead. An infield error would score the fifth run of the inning making it a 5-0 lead.
Eastern Tech would get one run back in the bottom half of the frame and Southern would answer with their sixth run off a Dillon Waters sacrifice fly. Jon Artale would pitch a perfect seventh inning to wrap up the Bulldog’s championship.
Thomas ended up going six innings giving up one unearned run and scattering two hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts. The University of Maryland commit challenged hitters with his fastball and kept the Eastern Tech lineup off balance all game with good command of his breaking ball in all counts.
Eastern Tech’s Andy Corbett and Riley Hodge each had a hit apiece.
Southern was led by Coleman (2-for-3 two RBI), and Dilts (2-for-3, 2B).
