Grant Mixell had three hits with three RBI and Anthony Felitti pitched six innings giving up one run to lead the Gaithersburg Trojans to the Maryland Class 4A State Title.
Felitti showed plenty of grit in the first half of his start as the Severna Park lineup worked the count and forced the talented lefty to a high pitch count early in the game. Severna had runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings, but were only able to generate one run in the third after back-to-back doubles by Stephen Boushell and Kody Milton. Felitti thwarted a bases loaded rally in the first with an inning-ending strikeout, and the Falcons rally in the second was put to rest on throw at the plate from right fielder Aaron Vargas and relay partner Brad Sawyer.
The final three innings were a completely different story as Felitti (currently ranked No. 2 in the class of 2016 MD rankings) began to show better command and use of his breaking ball, keeping the Falcon hitters off-balance and allowed only one hitter to reach base after the third.
The games scoring started in the bottom of the second when Mixell knocked in a courtesy runner for senior Trey Martinez after he led off the inning with a double down the third base line. Severna Park responded in the third tying the game after Milton’s double to right.
The bottom of the third was the big inning for Gaithersburg as Tim Traynor and Sawyer reached base to start the inning. After Severna Park starter Spencer Dietrich struck out the next two hitters, Martinez would walk and Mixell came to the plate. A wild pitch would score one and Mixell then hit a line drive to center that just was out of the reach of diving center fielder Trae Singleton’s glove and two more runs scored. Sawyer would add an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to 5-1.
Severna Park started the top of the seventh inning by putting their first four hitters on base off Gaithersburg reliever Brandon Deyo. The Trojans turned to Sawyer to pitch and the left-hander would give up a sacrifice fly to Griffin Wild then strike out the final two hitters to secure the championship for Gaithersburg.
Gaitherburg was led by Mixell’s three hits, including a double, and three RBI. Sawyer also added a 3-for-4 day at the plate with an RBI. Felitti's final line was six innings one run off six hits, two walks, and two strikeouts.
Dietrich pitched well in the loss for Severna Park. The righty went six innings giving up five runs (three earned) on nine hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. Left handed hitters caused Dietrich problems as they accounted for six of the nine hits. Senior Brendan Clark led the Falcon offense going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
