Max Hammond hit a game-winning single with the bases loaded and two outs to propel St. Mary’s to the 6-5 come-from behind victory over Boys’ Latin. The game was an exciting back-and-forth affair, with three lead changes in the contest.
The scoring wasted no time as Boys’ Latin scored a run in the first off St. Mary’s Starter Ryan Davis. Josh Smith knocked in Dominic Maggio on a single to left field to give the Lakers an early 1-0 lead.
St. Mary’s was able to tie the game up in the bottom of the second when Grant Donaldson scored on a wild pitch from third by Lakers starter Skyler Morris. Smith once again gave the Lakers the lead in the third off a single up the middle.
St. Mary’s took their first lead in the fourth off another Laker wild pitch and pass ball, after Devin Patrick reached with a single and Hammond got on base from a Boys Latin error.
The score stayed that way until the top of the sixth, where the Lakers loaded the bases and ended the day for Davis. Morris hit a sacrifice fly to center with one-out off reliever Kade Keys. Maggio then cleared the bases with a big two-out double that went to the wall in right field scoring two and giving the Lakers a 5-3 lead.
The Saints responded once again in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff double by catcher Brady O’Neil. Hammond knocked in O’Neil with a single up the middle and advancing to second on the throw. Donaldson came up next and lined a double down the left field line scoring Hammond and tying the game back up at five.
The bottom of the seventh saw St. Mary’s load the bases after two quick outs in the inning. A Ben Rankin single, HBP, and walk loaded the bases for Hammond, who launched a 3-1 fastball for the game-winner.
Hammond ended up 2-for-3 with two RBI and Donaldson had two RBI for the Saints. Smith was 3-for-4 with two RBI and Maggio 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead Boys’ Latin.
