Last week we took one final look at the roster from our Maryland Eastern Shore Showcase at Salisbury University. Today we conclude our coverage with a full analysis of the dual players from the event.
MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE SHOWCASE DUAL PLAYERS (LISTED ALPHABETICALLY)
Michael Birchfield SS/RHP Eastern Tech 2019
Athletic body type and 5-foot-10, 170 pound frame. Hits from an athletic, balanced, open and slightly crouched stance at the plate. Minimal movement in load. Short stride and creates nice separation. Short, uphill swing path with some lower half involvement. Showed some quick bat speed and an 80 mph exit velo. Does a nice job staying behind the ball and took two really nice rounds of line drives. Gap-to-gap line drive type hitter with occasional pop. Surrounds the ball and works through it in the infield. Athletic set-up, solid base, and showed soft hands and a quick funnel to the belt. Throws with short arm action from a high three-quarter slot at 71 mph. Ran a 7.12 60-yard dash. Small side-step wind-up and controlled leg kick into a compact balance point. Clean hand separation and down to out lower half drive. Throws downhill with shorter arm action from a mid three-quarters slot with regular effort. Lands square to the plate with a forwards, uphill lean. Fastball sat 79-80 mph and change-up was 73-74 mph. Breaking ball showed tight spin and sharp 12/6 break at 69-70 mph.
Blake Corbin RHP/SS James M. Bennett 2019
Athletic, solid body type and 6-foot-2, 190 pound frame. Hits from a balanced, athletic, slightly open stance at the plate. Smooth, rhythmic back load creating nice separation. Average stride length and strong lower half involvement. Short, slightly uphill swing path. Quick bat speed with an exit velo of 90 mph. Stays behind the ball well and gets good extension through contact. Gap-to-gap type hitter with some power. Works through the ball in the infield with fundamental footwork and funnels the ball to chest. Showed soft hands and quick, clean exchanges. Throws with short arm action from a high three-quarter slot at 79 mph. Showed the ability to throw accurately from the side on slow-rollers. Side-step wind-up and high leg kick into a tall balanced position. Pitched mostly from the stretch. Clean hand separation and strong lower half drive. Throws with shorter arm action from a high three-quarters slot with some effort. Fast arm speed and lands open falling off slightly to the first base side. Fastball ranged 82-85 mph and breaking ball had sharp 12/6 shape and tight spin at 69-70 mph.
Patrick Defeciani 1B/LHP Clarkstown North 2019
Athletic, solid body type and 6-foot-1, 185 pound frame. Hits from the left side in a balanced, athletic, square stance with a wide base. Small leg kick load with hands pre-set. Creates nice separation and showed excellent balance throughout swing. Strong lower half involvement and some bat speed. Short, slightly uphill swing path with an exit velo of 84 mph. Stays behind the ball well and gets good extension through contact. Gap-to-gap type hitter with present power to the pull side. Works through the ball at first base with some rhythm and fundamental footwork. Throws with long arm action from a high three-quarters arm slot at 75 mph. Smooth around the bag and turning the double play. Also showed the ability to pick it. Pitched from the stretch with a high controlled leg kick into a tall balance point. Stays over back side with clean hand separation and down to out lower half drive. Long, clean arm action throwing from a high three-quarters slot with easy effort. Gets over front side well landing square to the plate with an athletic finish. Fastball sat 73-74 mph and touched 75 mph. Change-up showed nice fade at 65-69 mph and breaking ball had big, sharp 1/7 shape at 61-62 mph.
Jacob Gill LHP/OF Patuxent 2019
Athletic body type and 6-foot, 155 pound frame. Hits from the left side in a balanced, athletic, slightly open stance. Quick, medium sized leg kick load and gets some separation. Showed some bat speed and lower half involvement in swing. Short, level swing path with an exit velo of 73 mph. Line drive type hitter with occasional pull side pop. Works through the ball in the outfield with fundamental footwork. Quick, clean exchanges throwing with long arm action from a low three-quarters slot at 63 mph. Ran a 7.53 60-yard dash. Slight up-tempo side-step wind-up and delivery. Throws with shorter arm action from a low three-quarters slot with regular effort. Creates some arm speed through release and lands square to the plate with an athletic finish. Fastball sat 68-69 and touched 70 mph. Change-up showed slight fade at 58-59 mph and breaking ball had 1/7 shape at 56-58 mph.
Zachary Glast OF/LHP DeMatha 2021
Athletic body type and 5-foot-10, 170 pound frame with room to grow. Hits from the left side in a balanced, athletic, slightly open stance. Short back load replacing front foot in stride. Creates quick bat speed through contact and showed some lower half involvement. Long, uphill swing path with an exit velo of 72 mph. Line drive type hitter with occasional pop. Plays through the ball in the outfield with fundamental footwork. Small glove tap during exchange and showed accuracy on throws to home plate. Throws with long arm action from a high three-quarters slot at 73 mph. Ran a 7.46 60-yard dash. Small, controlled wind-up and leg kick. Clean hand separation, uphill shoulder tilt, and smooth delivery. Long arm action throwing from a high three-quarter, near over the top arm slot with easy effort. Lands square to the plate with an athletic, slightly upright finish. Fastball sat 63-67 mph from the left side. Change-up showed slight dive at 59-61 mph and breaking ball had gradual 11/5 shape at 57-58 mph.
Michael Jarrell RHP/3B Cape Henlopen (DE) 2022
Solid body type and 5-foot-9, 180 pound frame. Hits from a balanced, square stance at the plate. Slight rock back load creating some separation. Short, slightly uphill swing path and compact stroke. Quick bat speed and strong lower half involvement. Keeps barrell in the zone and showed the ability to hit pitches in a variety of locations. Recorded a 75 mph exit velo. Gap line drive type hitter with some pop. Gets to a good fielding position at third base, funneling ball to chest. Quick exchange with with a small glove tap. Throws with long arm action from a high three-quarters slot at 63 mph. Controlled side-step wind-up with a high leg kick into a tall balance point. Clean hand separation with some uphill shoulder tilt. Throws with long arm action from a high three-quarters slot with light effort. Lands square to the plate falling off just slightly to the first base side. Fastball ranged 69-72 mph and breaking ball showed big, gradual 11/5 shape at 54-57 mph.
Ethan Kennedy 3B/RHP North County 2020
Athletic body type and 5-foot-10, 145 pound frame with room to fill out. Hits from a tall, slightly open stance at the plate with feet close together. Medium sized leg kick and short stride to load position. Short, slightly uphill swing path with quick bat speed. Gets good extension through contact with nice lower half involvement. Line drive type hitter with an exit velo was 78 mph. Showed solid fundamental footwork at third base working through the ball. Throws with shorter arm action from a high three-quarter slot at 74 mph. Controlled, deliberate side-step wind-up and high leg kick into a tall balanced position. Clean hand separation and smooth delivery with some lower half drive. Short arm action, throwing from a high three-quarters slot. Throws with easy effort and generates quick arm speed through release. Lands slightly closed with an good follow through and athletic finish. Showed good command and feel for all three pitches. Fastball sat 78-79 mph, breaking ball was 62-64 mph with gradual 11/5 break and change-up was 72 mph with slight dive.
Randy Polanco 3B/RHP All Hallows (NY) 2020
Athletic, solid body type and 6-foot-2, 200 pound frame. Hits from a balanced, athletic, square stance at the plate. Short, quick load creating some separation. Strong lower half involvement and excellent balance throughout swing. Short, slightly uphill swing path and quick bat speed. Exit velo was 83 mph. Took two really nice rounds of BP driving balls in the gaps. Gap-to-gap type hitter with some power. Works through the ball at third base with fundamental footwork and soft hands. Throws with short arm action from a high three-quarters slot at 77 mph. Showed the ability to throw accurately from the side on slow rollers. Smooth, controlled, side-step wind-up and delivery. Big leg kick into balance position. Clean hand separation and strong lower half drive. Throws with long, loose arm action from a high three-quarters slot with regular effort. Lands square to the plate with an athletic finish. Fastball sat 71-73 mph and change-up was 65-68 mph. Breaking ball showed 11/5 shape at 62-63 mph.
Jason Rivera LHP/OF St. Maria Goretti 2021
Athletic body type and 5-foot-10, 150 pound frame. Hits from the left side in a balanced, athletic, square stance. Sinks upper body slightly into a compact position during load. Short stride and strong lower half involvement in swing. Short, slightly uphill swing path and fast bat speed. Whips barrel through the zone with an 82 mph exit velo. Gap-to-gap line drive type hitter with occasional pop. Stays behind the ball really well with good balance and gets good extension through contact. Plays through the ball in the outfield with quick fundamental footwork. Showed quick, clean exchanges and throws with long arm action from a mid three-quarters slot at 78 mph. Ran a 7.06 60-yard dash. Up-tempo side-step wind-up and high leg kick into a tall balanced position. Clean hand separation and strong lower half drive. Throws with long arm action from a high three-quarters slot with easy effort. Lands square to the plate with an athletic finish. Showed some arm speed through release. Fastball sat 77-78 mph, breaking ball had short 12/6 break at 71-74 mph, and change-up was 71-72 mph.
Brett Swift 3B/OF/RHP James M. Bennett 2019
Big, solid athletic body type and 6-foot-3, 215 pound frame. Hits from an athletic, balanced, open stance at the plate. Smooth back rhythm and small leg kick load. Creates good separation and showed strong lower half involvement in swing. Stays behind the ball well with good extension through contact. Short, slightly uphill swing path with an exit velo of 90 mph on the day. Power type hitter with plus power to the pull side. Peppered the warning track and took one out on a really cold and extremely windy day. Works through the ball at third base with fundamental footwork and showed a quick, clean exchange. Throws with long arm action from a low three-quarter slot at 75 mph. Also ran a 7.38 60-yard dash. Starts slightly off-set to home plate with one foot on the rubber. Small side-step rock into a compact balance position. Clean hand separation and down to out lower half drive. Throws with long, loose arm action from a mid three-quarters slot with easy effort. Creates some quick, whippy arm speed through release and lands square to the plate with and athletic finish. Fastball sat 75-80 mph. Threw a breaking ball with gradual 11/5 shape at 61-63 mph and a slurve at 67 mph. Split showed tight 12/6 dive at 70-71 mph.
Evan Truitt RHP/OF Stephen Decatur 2021
Athletic body type and 5-foot-10, 150 pound frame. Hits from a balanced, athletic, slightly open stance at the plate. Short back load and average stride length. Gets uphill at contact and on front side. Showed some lower half involvement and bat speed. Level swing path with an exit velo of 75 mph. Line drive type hitter and took two solid rounds of BP squaring up several balls. Plays through the ball in the outfield with fundamental footwork. Showed clean exchanges throwing with long arm action from a high three-quarters slot at 81 mph. Controlled side-step wind and high leg kick into a tall balance position. Clean hand separation and strong down to out lower half drive. Nice rhythm in delivery generating quick arm speed through release. Gets over front side well landing square to home plate with an athletic finish. Long, loose arm action throwing from a high three-quarters slot with easy effort. Fastball sat 77-79 mph with some arm side run and breaking ball showed gradual 12/6 break at 60-63 mph. Showed good feel and command for change-up that was 68-71 with some fade.
