With the MLB Draft tonight, PBR Maryland has made its final update to the class of 2016 player rankings. As with any update, there were plenty of changes and this time saw some of the biggest movement in the Top 10. Although there were no players that made the PBR Draft 100 this year, there are plenty of talented individuals that could hear their name called this weekend or could increase their stock in the coming years when they become eligible again.
Heading the list once again and maintaining the No. 1 sport in Maryland is 3B/RHP Matt Mervis. The Georgetown Prep star and Duke recruit possesses ability as both a pitcher and hitter with his power ability at the plate garnering attention. Mervis this spring has made the most stride on the mound after a solid early spring getting more time on the mound along with his development of a slide with potential. Mervis has again mentioned his intent to be a Blue Devil and thus more than likely will not be the first Maryland high school player draft in tonight’s draft. Opinions are split as to whether Mervis' ultimate future lies on the mound or as a position player, but his two-way ability gives him the edge for the top spot.
Following Mervis is talented right-hander Elliott Zoellner (St. Mary’s HS). A Maryland recruit, Zoellner has plenty to like with his lanky frame and fast arm speed. Zoellner still has plenty of untapped potential and could be the first Maryland HS player picked up in the draft.
Pitching takes a strong-hold in the rankings as our top five players have ties to the mound. Brandon Martin stays at No. 3 and the first movement in our rankings is Tyler Blohm of Archbishop Spalding moving into the No. 4 spot. Blohm had an incredible season for the Cavaliers leading them to a third consecutive MIAA championship. The Maryland recruit had been up to 89 mph when we saw him in March with great improvement of his secondary added with a cleaner, more efficient delivery.
Finishing a continued rise through the rankings is Davonn Griffin at Hammond HS at the No.6 spot. Griffin has had an amazing summer, growing from a relatively unknown player into a top talent that is receiving interest for the draft. Griffin has plenty of raw athleticism and we could see his best years to come in the near future as he continues to develop.
Also making a jump into the top ten is St. James RHP Mitchell Wilson. The UMBC recruit pitches up to 89 mph sitting 85-87 with feel and command of a nice change up and potential in the breaking ball. The talent from the western part of Maryland has gone relatively under the radar but has shaped himself into a very nice pitching prospect in the 2016 class. Here is your sneak peek at the Top Ten.
