Underclass Trials: Pitcher Analysis

The Underclass Trials took place over the summer at Northlake Christian School. The event hosted many of the top underclass talent from around the state in a pro style workout including defensive positional workouts, batting practice and 60-yard dash. To wrap up event coverage, we will release a position analysis of all in attendance finishing up with pitchers.
Underclass Trials: Pitchers
Payton Albert 1B / RHP / Vermillion Catholic , LA / 2022Physical 6-foot-2, 245-pound frame with a larger build. Right-handed pitcher with an easy, low effort delivery, working in-line with a shorter arm action into a ¾ release. Average fastball command with arm side run. Works to all quadrants at 76-78 mph. Flashed a rolling breaking ball with 11/5 shape and average depth at 63-64 mph. Changeup is a solid offering at 74-77 mph with solid arm side sinking action. |
Aiden Colvin 3B / RHP / Benton, LA / 2022Right-handed pitcher with a deliberate delivery, slow-paced rocker step into a controlled, high leg lift into a coiled position. Works from the first base side of the rubber, striding towards the right-handed batters box creating slight crossfire direction. Flashed solid fastball command with late arm side life at 80-82 mph. Slider is a solid pitch, firm with 11/5 shape and late, darting action at 68-72 mph. Showed advanced feel for a 73-74 mph changeup with heavy sinking action while maintaining fastball arm speed. |
Jackson Cowan 3B / RHP / West Monroe , LA / 2023Rankings StateRank: 42 / POS: 4
Physical right-handed pitcher with a flowing, low effort delivery. Works in-line with a high leg lift and a short stride creating solid downhill tilt. Medium arm action into a ¾ slot. Fastball was scattered around a bit at 72-74 mph. Breaking ball flashed solid shape with rolling break at 60-62 mph. Changeup is a nice pitch with quality arm side fade at 65-67 mph. |
Gunnar Gearen RHP / OF / DeQuincy, LA / 2021Right-handed pitcher works from the first base side of the rubber with an in-line delivery. Drop and drive delivery with a medium arm action into an over-the-top release creating some downhill angle on the fastball. Worked in the 78-80 mph range with occasional cut on the fastball. Breaking ball flashed 12/6 shape with average break at 67-68 mph. |
Trey Hawsey 1B / LHP / West Monroe, LA / 2024Physical left-handed pitcher with a rotational, medium effort delivery. Smooth rhythm with a compact leg lift working down the mound with a slightly open stride. Medium arm action into a high-¾ slot. Fastball flashed arm side life at 71-74 mph with average command. Breaking ball flashed 1/7 shape with average depth at 61-63 mph. Also, flashed solid feel for a changeup with quality arm side fade at 60-65 mph. |
Clayton Hebert RHP / OF / Episcopal School of Acadiana, LA / 2022Right-handed pitcher works primarily from the stretch with a simple delivery. Compact, scap load take away into a high-¾ slot with solid arm speed. Lands with an open front toe which causes fall off to the first base side and occasional inconsistencies to glove side. Showed ability to locate the fastball to both sides of the plate at 77-81 mph. Breaking ball flashed 11/5 shape and average spin at 63-68 mph. Also has solid feel for the changeup at 70-74 mph with small arm side fade. |
Tate Hess RHP / 1B / Singer, LA / 2023Rankings StateRank: 11 / POS: 3
Right-handed pitcher with advanced feel to pitch. Balanced, in-line delivery with level shoulders, medium arm action into a high-¾ release with quick arm speed and an athletic finish. Pitched to both sides of the dish with above average fastball command at 83-84 mph. Has feel to spin a curveball at 63-64 mph with 11/5 shape and rolling break. Spins fine and projects to be a solid offering with time. Changeup is an average present pitch with quality arm side fade and well located at 77-80 mph. Three pitch right-hander with a starter profile. |
Hunter Lail RHP / 3B / Lafayette Christian, LA / 2022Long 6-foot-2, 170-pound frame with room to add strength. Right-handed pitcher with a smooth, in-line delivery with a medium arm action into a high-¾ slot with solid arm speed. Showed average fastball command with slight arm side run. Works downhill, attacking the bottom of the zone at 77-80 mph. Flashed a breaking ball that showed a early, rolling break with 11/5 shape and average depth at 66-68 mph. Changeup is a developing pitch with arm side fade and fastball arm speed at 66-70 mph. |
Brandon Levy RHP / SS / Parkway, LA / 2023Athletic right-handed pitcher with a clean, in-line delivery. Drop and drive delivery with uphill tilted shoulders and a long, deep arm action creating downhill angle from an over-the-top slot. Fastball sat 86-88 mph with average command and quick arm speed. Breaking ball showed 12/6 shape with average depth at 67-70 mph. Changeup was commanded well to arm side with quality fade at 73-75 mph. Three pitch right-hander with arm strength. |
Blake Lobell RHP / C / Springfield , LA / 2022Rankings StateRank: 37 / POS: 5
Right-handed pitcher with an on-line delivery, works over the rubber with a slight pause at the bottom of his leg lift. Late hand break with a medium, continuous arm action into a high-3/4 slot. Ran his fastball up to 87 mph while working mostly in the 84-86 mph range. Flashed feel for 70-71 mph breaking ball with slurvy shape and solid depth. Change is a solid third pitch working 75-78 mph with arm side fade and fastball arm speed. |
Kameron Mangum RHP / SS / North Desoto , LA / 2023Right-handed pitcher works primarily from the stretch with an in-line delivery. Long, deep take away with a stab in the back into a high-¾ slot with solid arm speed. Fastball flashed occasional arm side sink when located down in the zone. Average command at 78-80 mph. Breaking ball showed loose spin with 11/5 shape and average depth at 62-65 mph. Also showed a solid changeup at 71-73 mph with average feel and developing action. |
Reed Maples RHP / 1B / Belle Chasse , LA / 2022Right-handed pitcher works primarily from the stretch starting on the first base side of the rubber with a slight crossfire delivery. Medium arm action into a ¾ release. Fastball works in the 72-75 mph range with some arm side sink when down. Sweeping breaking ball with 10/4 shape and early, rolling break at 61-65 mph. Changeup is a developing pitch with fastball arm speed at 64-65 mph, could develop into a solid offering. |
Steele Miceli 3B / 1B / Northshore , LA / 2023Right-handed pitcher works primarily from the stretch with a slightly across body, sidearm delivery with a medium arm action creating quality arm side sink from a low-¾ /sidearm slot. Flashed solid command of the fastball at 71-75 mph with late sinking action. Breaking ball showed solid spin with frisbee shape at 58-59 mph. Changeup had deception with arm side sink and fastball arm speed at 59-62 mph. |
Michael Plummer OF / LHP / Neville, LA / 2023Rankings StateRank: 32 / POS: 7
Left handed pitcher works primarily from the stretch and from the first base side of the rubber. Slightly open strider with a long deep take away into a high-¾ release with quick arm speed. Flashed average command of the fastball at 80-82 with arm side run. Breaking ball showed 1/7 shape with fastball arm speed and occasional, quality late depth at 67-70 mph. Changeup was always down with fastball arm speed and late fading action at 71-72 mph. Projectable left-hander with solid deception. |
Andrew Prejean RHP / SS / Holy Savior Menard, LA / 2023Right-handed pitcher with a simple, athletic delivery working in-line with a clean, medium arm action into a ¾ release with solid arm speed. Fastball flashed occasional arm side life and sink with solid average command at 73-77 mph, topping out a 78 mph. Breaking ball flashed developing spin with 10/4 shape at 63-66 mph. Flashed advanced feel for the changeup with short, arm side fade at 67-69 mph. |

Right-handed pitcher uses a simple delivery with a medium arm action into a high-¾ slot. Worked 74-77 mph with the fastball showing average command. Breaking ball was 64-69 mph with 11/-5 shape. Flashed a solid changeup at 65-66 mph with arm-side fade. |
Ethan Sinitiere RHP / OF / Southside, LA / 2022Projectable right-hander with a slow tempo, in-line delivery. Long levers with a slow, methodical rocker step and leg lift before uncoiling with a medium arm action into a high-¾ release average arm speed. Fastball has good angle, working downhill to the bottom of the zone with solid life at 77-79 mph. Breaking ball flashed solid spin with rolling break 65-66 mph. Changeup is a developing pitch with late sinking action at 65-67 mph. |
