Yesterday Prep Baseball Report Louisiana began its spring coverage of the high school season with a scrimmage between Holy Cross HS and Fontainebleau HS. The Holy Cross Tigers ended up defeating Fontainebleau, in the unofficial contest, by a score of 11-5.
Below are a few notes on what our scouting staff saw yesterday. In addition, the Louisiana Scout Blog was updated with video and scouting reports (For SUBSCRIBERS).
+ RHP Camden Dusang, a Pearl River CC commit, started on the bump for Fontainebleau, striking out several and showing a quality three-pitch mix that included a fastball up to 88 mph.
+ Usually at this point in the season, pitchers are way ahead of hitters. Dusang was certainly sharp in his three innings of work, but the Tigers put several good swings on him eventually plating 11 in the game. The leadoff hitter for the Tigers, C Cole Nalesnik (2017) took a 1-1 fastball from Dusang and hammered it out of the yard, but it went foul. Dusang followed with a nasty changeup with hard, fading action to punch out Nalesnik. Later in the inning, SS Grant Schulz (2016) took an 88-mph fastball to right-center for a stand-up double, but was left stranded.
+ In the third inning, Holy Cross 3B Cyle Clayton took an elevated fastball from Dusang and deposited it over the left field wall for a two-run homer.
+ Holy Cross controlled much of the game, stretching their lead to 7-1 in the top of 6th. Fontainebleau rallied with walks and a few hits to cut the lead to 7-5 in the 6th. It was all Fontainebleau would eventually be able to capitalize on, although later in the game they rallied again, loading the bases. Left-handed hitting 3B Ryan Zimmerman (2017), a wiry athlete with long levers, took an elevated fastball and hammered it to his pull side for an easy double, which made things interesting, but he was eventually stranded on the bases.
+ Holy Cross scored four more later to put the game away, showing promise to have one of the more potent offenses in the Catholic League this year. The Tigers are a veteran heavy club with a potent middle of order in seniors Grant Schulz, Matthew Muhleisen, and Tre Turner (Arizona State recruit), as well as showing solid athleticism throughout the lineup.
+ Fontainebleau is an interesting club. They have a quality front end starter in Dusang, and some thump in the middle of order with Zimmerman and others.
