Game of the Week - John Curtis vs. Holy Cross
April 12, 2021
With only 1-2 weeks left of district play, the 2021 high school regular season is getting set to wrap up. Teams are starting to take their form and are getting prepared for playoff runs. We are heading east for our Week 8 Game of the Week that features John Curtis travelling to Holy Cross on Thursday 04/15/21. The Patriots currently sit at #3 in the Division 1 state rankings, with the Tigers right behind them at #4. Below, we take a look at each club and the key players to look out for ahead of their meeting this week.
John Curtis
Record: 17-3
Current Ranking: #3 in Division 1
Key Wins: Brother Martin, Rummel
Runs Scored: 195 (9.8 runs scored/game)
Runs Allowed: 70 (3.5 runs allowed/game)
Head Coach Jeff Curtis told us before the season, "The goal for us will always be the same....to win a state championship." Well, the Patriots have had a great season up to this point and are certainly in a position to make a run at their 10 state title. On the mound, 2021 Michael Curtis has been super reliable this spring posting a 4-1 record with 1 save. Through 31.2 IP he owns a 1.79 ERA and has given up 28 H, 9 R, 8 ER, with 4 BB and 19 K. 2023 Michael Obrien (Tulane Commit) also owns a 4-1 record this season should Coach Curtis decide to go with a southpaw. Offensively, the team has been lead by 2021 Nyan Hayes (Howard Community College Signee) and 2022 Logan O'Neill (University of New Orleans Commit). Hayes, who hits in the lead-off spot, is hitting .406 with 6 2B, 3B, 20 R, and 17 RBI. O'Neill, a 2020 PBR Future Gamer, is hitting .418 with 2 HR, 3 2B, 2 3B, 22 R, and 20 RBI. 2021 Reggie Bergeron has also been really good this season, as he is hitting .386 with 6 2B, 17 R, and 22 RBI.
Holy Cross
Record: 17-7
Current Ranking: #4 in Division 1
Key Wins: St. Paul's, Jesuit
Runs Scored: 205 (8.5 runs scored/game)
Runs Allowed: 118 (4.9 runs allowed/game)
Holy Cross came into the 2021 season with high expectations and everyone, including Head Coach Andy Cannizaro, knew that 2021 Gavin Schulz (Tulane Signee) would be the catalyst atop the Tigers order and he has not disappointed so far. The SS is hitting .406 with 5 HR, 30 R, and 25 RBI. The offense doesn't stop there either. 2021 Joshua Orr (Loyola University Signee) is hitting .358 with a HR, 5 2B, 21 R, and 17 RBI. 2021 Davis Stephens is enjoying a monster year at the plate as well with a .413 average, 4 HR, 7 2B, 3 3B, 27 R, and 35 RBI. 2024 Brody Forstall was a name that Coach Cannizaro told us to remember coming into this year and he's gotten off to a great start in his freshman campaign hitting .333 with 19 R, and 9 RBI. On the mound, the Tigers haven't been as sharp as everyone thought they would be, but there has still been some bright spots. Orr is 4-1 on the season, while fellow senior Todd Canatella is 4-2.
