Top Prospect Games: Middle Infield Analysis

On Sunday, August 9, Prep Baseball Report-Missouri held the Top Prospect Games at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg.  Nearly 100 uncommitted players in the 2016 class from Kansas and Missouri attended. 

Player profiles have been update with times, velocities and videos.  Below is a look at the middle infielders from the event, and overall physical group of players.  In the days to come, we will break down the outfielders, and pitchers. The corner infielders are listed in alphabetical order.  Players rankings will be updated in weeks to come.

Middle Infielders

Jackson Abdon, 2B/SS, Bolivar, 2016
Abdon is a 6-foot 165-pound right-handed hitting shortstop, in the 2016 class.  Abdon ran a 7.54 60 and had an exit velo of 78 mph. Open stance, short stride, level path through zone, consistent solid contact to pull side during batting practice, singled during game action.  On the infield, 76 mph positional velo, loose high three-quarters release, athletic actions, accurate throws.

Michael Davis III, SS, University Academy, 2016
Davis is a 6-foot 190-pound right-handed hitting shortstop, in the 2016 class.  He ran a 7.62 60 and posted a 92 mph exit velo, one of the top for the event. Smooth load at the plate from an athletic stance, no wasted movement, power to pull side, gap-to-gap approach.  Although no hits during game action, three solid contanct ground outs to shortstop.  On the infield, 76 mph positional velo, long high three-quarters release, fields ball in athletic position, clean exchange, fluid footwork, mostly accurate throws.

Nick Dembski, 2B, Liberty North, 2016
Dembski is a 5-foot-9 190-pound right-handed hitting second baseman.   Dembski ran a 7.72 60 and had an exit velo of 85 mph.  Athletic set-up at the plate, pre-swing rhythm in hands, smooth lower half load, level path, quick bat speed, aggressive during batting practice, lines drives to middle/pull side, singled during game action.  On the infield, 72 mph positional velo, quick transfer and release, over-the-top release, works behind the ball, somewhat accurate throws.

Donovan Ditto, MO, SLUH, 2017
Ditto is a 5-foot-8 155-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in the 2017 class.  He ran a 7.01 60 and has an exit velo of 75 mph. Balanced set-up, minimal load, small stride, upper body dominate, level path, infield hit during game, good instincts on base paths reading ball in dirt.  Defensively, 79 mph positional velo, over the top release, athletic footwork, quick transfer and release, one accurate throw after another.

Jack Goodwin, 2B, Rockhurst, 2016
Goodwin is a 5-foot-10 170-pound left-handed hitting second baseman in the 2016 class.  He ran a 7.28 60 and had an 83 mph exit velo.  Athletic set-up at late, smooth load with no wasted movement, consistent solid contact to the middle of the field during batting practice, reached on error in game action.  On the infield, 74 mph positional velo, fluid actions, short over-the-top, quick catch and throw, plays through catch, momentum towards target, mostly accurate throws.

Brandon Green, 2B, Liberty, 2016
Green is a 6-foot 175-pound right-handed hitting second baseman in the 2016 class fro Liberty HS.  Green ran a 7.45 60 and has an exit velo of 86 mph.  Green had a good round of batting practice, squaring up ball to the middle-to-pull side, separates hands and stride, loose hands, level path to extension, power potential, doubled to center field in game action.  During defensive evaluations, 84 mph positional velo, over-the-top release, one of the top velos among infielders, fluid exchange tapping glove, momentum through the catch, fluid footwork, accurate throws. 

Jake Hahn, 2B, Basehor-Lindwood (KS), 2016
Hahn is a 5-foot-10 175-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder.  He has an exit velo of 80 mph and runs a 7.00 60.  Hahn has an open stance and controlled load at the plate, gap-to-gap approach.  On the infield, 77 mph positional velo, short over the top release, plays through ball, athletic footwork, accurate throws.

Hayden Hirschvogel, 2B, Jefferson City, 2017
Hirshvogel is a 6-foot 182-pound right-handed hitting second baseman in the 2017 class.  Hirschvogel runs a 7.75 60 and had an 81 mph exit velo. Had a good round of batting practice, pop to pull side, aggressive approach, loose hands, feel for the barrel, level/quick path to extension, singled in game action. On the infield, 74 mph positional velo, made all the plays cleanly, high three-quarters arm slot, fluid footwork and transfer, mostly accurate throws.

Hunter McMahon, SS/2B, Staley, 2016
McMahon is a 6-foot-1 160-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder. McMahon runs a 7.15 60 and has an 83 mph exit velo. At the plate, starts loaded in back leg, no wasted movements, loose hands, level to extension, gap-to-gap approach, singled during game action.  On the infield, 82 mph positional velo, one of the top velos on the day for infielders, loose over the top arm action, fluid footwork, clean exchange, accurate throws.

Clayton Meyer, 2B, Northwest, 2016
Meyer is a 5-foot-11 175-pound right-handed hitting second baseman in the 2016 class.  Meyer has an 80 mph exit velo and runs a 6.91 60, one of the top times for the event.  Has a middle-to-pull approach at the plate, minimal load with toe tap, long front arm, level path, quick hands.  Defensively, over-the-top release, clean transfer, 67 mph positional velo, fluid footwork, accurate throws.

Brigham Mooney, SS, Blue Springs South, 2016
Mooney is a 5-foot-11 155-pound right-handed hitting shortstop. He runs a 7.13 60 and had an exit velo of 80 mph.  Athletic set-up at the plate, minimal load, early front foot, middle-to-pull approach, balanced swing, repeatable, singled to center field in game action.  On the infield, 80 mph positional velo, long/loose over-the-top release, quick footwork, clean exchange, mostly accurate throws.

Jarrett Newell, SS, Jackson, 2017
Newell is a 5-foot-11 175-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in the 2017 class.  Newell ran a 6.90, one of the top times for the event, 60 and has an exit velo of 77 mph.  Newell had a good round of batting practice, showing power and feel for the barrel, athletic stance, loads hands, middle-to-pull approach, power to pull gap, fast bat path, stolen base in game action.  On the infield, 74 mph positional velo, high three-quarters release, fields ball in athletic position, clean exchange, soft hands, mostly accurate throws. 

Ethan Owens, 2B, Lee’s Summit West, 2016
Owens is a fright-handed hitting 5-foot-10 165-pound second baseman. Owens fan a 6.72 60, one of the top times for the event, and has an exit velo of 84 mph.  Simple swing mechanics with acceleration, minimal load, level path to extension, good round of batting practice, line drives gap-to-gap.  On the infield, 70 mph positional velo, loose high-three quarters release, arm works from different angles, clean exchange, quick footwork, showed range in game action, somewhat accurate throws. 

Harrison Schnurbursch, SS/2B, Lee’s Summit West, 2016
Schnurbusch is a 6-foot-1 165-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder in the 2016 class.  Schnurbusch runs a 7.22 60 and has an exit velo of 87 mph, one of the top for the event.  Schnurbusch used the whole field during batting practice, consistent solid contact gap-to-gap, doubled in game action off the wall in right field, instinctive baserunner, stole third base.  On the infield, 83 mph positional velo, one of the top velos for infielders, athletic actions, quick catch and throw, accurate throws. 

Kellen Sojka, 2B/SS, Blue Springs South, 2016
Sojka is a 6-foot-1 170-pound left-handed hitting middle infielder in the 2016 class.  Sojka ran a 7.44 60 and has an 81 mph exit velo. Athletic stance, simple and repeatable mechanics, loose hands, path has some lift, middle to pull approach, stole second and third in game action.  On the infield, 67 mph positional velo, made all plays cleanly, high three-quarters release, fluid footwork, fluid exchange, mostly accurate throws.

Alex Stevenson, SS, Lutheran South, 2016
Stevenson is a 6-foot-1 170-pound right-handed hitting shortstop.  He ran a 7.02 60 and has an exit velo of 89 mph, one of the top for the event.  Athletic set-up at the plate, smooth load, aggressive hands through extension, gap-to-gap approach, solid consistent contact during batting practice.  On the infield, 81 mph positional velo, one of the top velos for infielders, athletic, hands and feet work together, plays through the ball, loose high three-quarters release, accurate throws. 

Chase Swisher, SS, Lee’s Summit North, 2016
Swisher is a strong 6-foot 200-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in the 2016 class.  He ran a 7.07 60 and has an exit velo of 82 mph.  Swisher has a balanced set-up at the plate, smooth load, level path, arm bar.  On the infield, 70 mph positional, made all plays cleanly, loose high three-quarters release, fluid footwork, fluid exchange, accurate throws,

David Thompson, 2B/SS, Raymore-Peculiar, 2017
Thompson is a right-handed hitting 5-foot-8 160-pound middle infielder in the 2017 class.  Thompson runs a 7.75 60 and has an 82 mph exit velo.  Thompson athletic set-up, smooth load with hands, toe tap, squared up ball to middle of field during batting practice, loose hands, tripled to right in game action. Defensively, 74 mph positional velo, high threw quarters release, quick footwork, clean exchange, plays through the ball, somewhat accurate throws. 

Justin Vochatzer, 2B/SS, Liberty, 2016
Vochatzer is a left-handed hitting 5-foot-10 155-pound middle infielder in the 2016 class.  Vochatzer runs a 7.43 60 and has a 75 mph exit velo. Vochatzer used the whole field during batting practice, quick bat speed, minimal load, level path, consistent solid contact.  During defensive evals, 77 mph positional velo, over-the-top release, quick catch and throw, athletic actions, somewhat accurate throws.

Andrew White, SS/2B, De Soto, 2016
White is a 6-foot 175-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder in Kansas 2016 class.  White has an 80 mph exit velo and ran a 7.22 60. Athletic set-up at the plate, smooth lower-half load with no wasted movements, short path to contact, level path, gap-to-gap approach. During defensive evaluations, momentum towards target, clean exchange, fluid footwork, 78 mph positional velo, mostly accurate throws.

Grant Wood, SS, Jefferson City, 2017
Wood is a 5-foot-11 170-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in the 2017 class.  Wood has an exit velo of 86 mph and runs a 6.82 60, one of the top times for the event.   Wood had consistent solid contact gap-to-gap during batting practice, aggressive middle approach, fast bat speed, smooth load, stays on ball after contact.   On the infield, 84 mph positional velo, one of the top velos among infielders, over-the-top release, throws have carry, quick catch and throw, athletic footwork, mostly accurate throws.
