8/5/15 - McMahon is a 6-foot-1 160-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder and right-handed pitcher. McMahon runs a 7.15 60 and has an 83 mph exit velo. At the plate, starts loaded in back leg, no wasted movements, loose hands, level to extension, gap-to-gap approach, singled during game action. On the infield, 82 mph positional velo, one of the top velos on the day for infielders, loose over the top arm action, fluid footwork, clean exchange, accurate throws. On the mound, McMahon has a smooth delivery, loose arm action, repeats delivery, body stays under control, taps glove at top of balance point. Fastball mostly 83-85 mph, some with late running action, hard 11-to-5 action on curveball 64-68 mph. Change-up at 71-74 mph, arm side run, fastball arm speed, late movement. Build and arm action would suggest a velocity increase over the next year. Struck out three and walked two in outing.
2/16/15 - McMahon is a thin, athletic 6-foot-1, 155-pound right-hand hitting second baseman and right-handed pitcher. Attends Staley HS in Staley, MO. Class of 2016. Hits from a slight crouch, some rhythm in load, strides in place, level path, line drive approach. Exit velocity of 86 mph, ran a 4.57 home-to-first. Light feet in the infield, soft hands, loose high three-quarters throwing motion, accurate arm, top throwing velocity clocked at 76 mph. On the mound slow and simple early in delivery, picks up tempo during knee lift, tall balance point, aggressive move to the plate, three-quarters slot, quick arm, tall finish. Worked both sides with fastball, some arm side run, 82-84 mph, 85 tops. Breaking ball with 12/6 shape, gradual action, 63-64 mph. Change-up runs arm side 72-74 mph. Solid 2016 prospect that has a frame with plenty of room to fill out.
3/2/19: Athletic and projectable at 6-foot-3, 190 pounds, McMahon mostly repeated his delivery, used his hips and blocked well (the hip, modern-day term for throwing against a firm front side is "blocking"). Also landed in good direction to the plate and showed average deception from a high three-quarter slot. Fastball peaked at 94 and maintained 90-91 mph throughout his six-inning start. Occasionally showed power sink, diving under barrels at 91 mph. Overall his fastball had average-to-above average life. Best offspeed pitch on this day was a hard-actioned changeup which he began to use more often the second time through the lineup. Kept down in the zone at 82-84 mph with good hand speed. It projects to be a consistent, above-average pitch in the future. The first few innings McMahon relied on his curveball as the main offspeed pitch. Showed 11/5 rotation at 76-79 mph. The pitch likely has a lower spin rate due to the slightly inverted position of his wrist out of his glove at hand break, which can cause a pitcher to lose the loose "whip" a curveball requires. Wrist position is a tough fix and he may be better off simply switching to a slower spin rate type of pitch...throwing a slider instead of a curveball. Also, showed his competitive side when he appeared to run out of gas in the fifth inning around 65 pitches. He re-fueled and went to his changeup to strike out both the 3-hole and 4-hole hitters to escape a jam. On the day, he threw 98 pitches, 65 for strikes. Originally from Kansas City, (Mo.), McMahon is new to the South Texas scouting scene after sitting out last season at Coffeyville CC (Kan.) after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He will likely receive much consideration for Day Two this June. The consistency of his breaking pitch and continued good health are the two keys for him to move up draft lists. (Seifert)
