Jakob Shields (Maize, 2017) is a 6-foot, 160-pound left-hand hitting, right hand-throwing middle infielder. He has a simple and balanced set-up at the plate, with minimal hand load, level bat path. He maintains balance throughout swing, and has a 78 mph exit velocity.
Shields ran a 4.14 home to first base and 7.08 60-yard dash time. Defensively, Shields showed good actions on the infield, good lateral movement, clean exchanges, quick release, connected and under control, smooth arm action with a velo of 73 mph.
Here is a look inside the recruiting process for Jakob Shields.
PBR: Are you looking for anything in particular in a school? (Example: high academics, certain academic program, local, etc.)
Shields: I am willing to travel to other cities and states for college. I'm interested in a school with challenging academics and a strong baseball program. I'm planning on major in business/pre-law.
PBR: How did you do your junior year? What were your high school statistics? And how did your team do?
Shields: I had a really good spring and summer defensively my junior season. I think I only had two errors in both my Spring and Summer seasons combined.
I didn't hit as well as I wanted during my high school season, but fixed a flaw in my swing and had a great summer at the plate, hitting .350, with an On Base % over .500. My high school team won our league as well as our Regional, placing 3rd at the Kansas 5A state tournament.
PBR: What are you goals for your senior season?
Shields: My goals are to continue to improve my all-around game and help Maize High School earn a 5A state title in 2017. I hope to also achieve individual honors along the way.
PBR: What travel team do you play for? Are you playing fall ball with a team?
Shields: I play for the Kansas Cannons out of Wichita in the summer. Since I play High School football in the fall, I fill-in with the Cannons in the fall when available.
PBR: Do you play any other sports?
Shields: I play football for Maize High School.
PBR: What are your ACT and GPA?
Shields: I earned a 26 on the ACT, but am planning on taking the test again. My GPA is 3.7 on a 4.0 scale.
