Prep Baseball Report Iowa's Fall Underclass event took place on Sunday, October 11, 2015. The event was held at Waukee High School in Waukee, IA. The event featured prospects from the 2017 and 2018 classes who showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff and multiple coaches in attendance.
St. Thomas Aquinas (KS) Bayler Hinz was selected as the top player in the event. Hinz is a physical player at the plate and on the mound and flashed raw power during the B.P. portion of the event. His performed very well on the mound consistently pumping his fastball in the 86-88 mph range with feel for 2 pitches in the zone.

Mason Aschenbrenner, OF, Oskaloosa, 2018
6-foot-1, 155-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 7.1 runner. Leg kick trigger. Drops hands in load. Middle/away approach and stays inside baseball at contact. Solid consistent barrel to baseball. 83 mph exit velocity. Solid athlete in outfield. Good body control with above avg. feet and glove. Short arm action with above avg. carry and accuracy to target. 78 mph arm strength.
Jordan Ball, SS/OF, Troy-Buchanan (MO), 2017
5-foot-10, 152-pound right-handed hitting utility player. 7.47 runner. Spread stance with short stride. Slashy line-drive swing plane. Middle/away approach with solid contact. 71 mph exit velocity off tee. Long ½ pie arm action in outfield. Solid accuracy to target. Tends to field underneath body. 75 mph arm strength. Long release in infield with avg. actions. Solid accuracy across diamond. 73 mph arm strength across infield.
Bret Barnett, LHP/OF, Martensdale St. Mary’s, 2017
6-foot-1, 145-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.6 runner. Simple repeatable delivery with good direction to plate. 2-piece arm action with slight stab on backside. Fastball has avg./ok life with occasional cut action and depth. Curveball has 1/7 shape with flashing of sweeping break. Changeup has above avg. fade and sink in bottom of zone. Athletic set-up in box. Double tap trigger with short stride. Heavy lift in swing plane. Middle/away approach with ok pop in bat. Solid contact with top-spin action on baseball. 79 mph exit velocity off tee. Loose athletic body in outfield. Short arm action with arm-side tail on throws. Solid accuracy to target. 82 mph arm strength.
Jared Booth, SS, Mount Vernon, 2017
5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitting shortstop. 7.44 runner. Front heel turn trigger to swing. No stride. Middle/away approach. Drives ball well when gets weight through at contact. 82 mph exit velocity. Shows above avg. glove in field. Fields across body occasionally. Avg. carry and accuracy across diamond with short arm action and quick release. 73 mph arm strength.
Ethan Chipps, LHP, Ankeny Centennial, 2017
6-foot-1, 195-pound left-handed pitcher. Strong build. Solid rhythm and sequence in delivery. Short balance point with good direction to plate. Shoulder tilt and throws up/ over front side. Avg./ok life on fastball with clean arm action. 12/6 breaking ball shows solid depth with occasional snap on end. Changeup is thrown with above avg. armspeed with flashes of heavy fade.
Matt Culver, C, Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 2017
5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.54 runner. Short stride. Good balance. Compact swing. Short to contact. Gap to gap approach and flashes hard line drive contact. 79 mph exit velocity. Shows ability to receive. Stabs occasionally at balls down in zone. Clean exchanges with good direction to second base. Length in release with short arm action. Avg. accuracy to bag. 68 mph arm strength with pop times in 2.34-2.6 range.
Brody Gannon, 2B, Dallas Center-Grimes, 2017
5-foot-10, 145-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder. 7.22 runner. Front heel turn trigger. Stiff legs in swing using all upper half. Whole field approach. Singles hitter. 76 mph exit velocity off tee. Shows avg. feet and hands in field. Late glove position and fields deep occasionally. One piece arm action with solid accuracy to bag. 72 mph arm strength.
Bayler Hinz, 1B/RHP, St. Thomas Aquinas (KS), 2017
6-foot-3, 200-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.18 runner. Dive bomb hitter with balance. Gathers/delivers weight well through contact. Shows well above avg. pop in bat when extended through contact. Short path to baseball and stays connected well. Gap to gap approach. 88 mph exit velocity off tee. Solid arm with accuracy across diamond. Avg./ok glove at position. Shows avg. actions around bag. 80 mph arm strength across diamond. Slight tuck and coil in delivery. Lands slightly open to plate. Arm action is clean from high ¾ slot and ball comes out of hand well. Fastball has running life at 86-88 mph. Shows solid feel for 11/5 breaking ball with tight rotation and flashes of depth. Stiff at times with changeup with ok fade.
Austin Jennings, RHP/OF, Spirit Lake, 2018
5-foot-7, 130-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.43 runner. Step and turn delivery. Collapse at balance point. Fastball shows shows run from ¾ arm slot with avg./ok life. Curveball has loose spin with flashes of depth on break. Changeup is thrown with good arm speed for strikes. Body load. Short stride. Length in swing with arm bar. Line drive swing plane. 78 mph exit velocity off tee. Long ¾ arm action in outfield. Solid carry and accuracy to target. Above avg. hands and feet with aggressive routes to baseball. 81 mph arm strength.
Adam Johs, 3B, Burlington Notre Dame, 2017
5-foot-11, 150-pound right-handed hitting third baseman. 7.37 runner. Double tap trigger with longer stride. Falls back at contact losing leverage. Out and around at contact with pull approach. 80 mph exit velocity. Late glove position and fields deep in stance. Long release on throws with avg. accuracy to target. 70 mph arm strength across diamond.
Matthew Karnes, C, Norwalk, 2017
6-foot, 210-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 8.5 runner. Simple swing with good balance. Line drive swing plane. Gap to gap approach with consistent solid contact. Shows ability to go away. 79 mph exit velocity off tee. Stiff actions receiving. Length to exchange. Short arm action. 72 mph arm strength with flashes of carry on throws. Avg. accuracy to bag. 2.28-2.55 pop times.
Kyle Oberbroeckling, RHP/3B, Davenport West, 2018
6-foot, 225-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 8.13 runner. Starts up-tempo in delivery. Slight turn and pause at balance point. Lands across body in delivery. Short arm action. Flashes of cut on fastball at 78-80 mph elevated in zone. Slows arm on curveball with loose 11/5 rotation. Cut action on changeup thrown with stiff wrist. Mid/pull approach. Some stiffness in lower half. Slight leg kick trigger to swing. Drops hands in swing creating lift through contact. Solid contact with flashes of strength. 82 mph exit velocity. Fields deep in stance with average range in field. Short arm action with 77 mph arm strength across diamond.
Carson Parker, SS, Mason City, 2017
5-foot-8, 150-pound right-handed hitting shortstop. 7.18 runner. Athletic stance. Good weight transfer through contact. Gap to gap approach with flashes of pop to oppo gap. Consistent hard contact. 83 mph exit velocity. Fields low to ground and out front. Soft hands. Funnels baseball occasionally. Plays through baseball well. Above avg. carry on throws. Good feet in field. 77 mph arm strength.
Evan Salmon, 2B, Johnston, 2017
5-foot-11, 145-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder. 7.22 runner. Athletic stance. Some length to contact. Lift in swing plane with gap to gap approach. 83 mph exit velocity. Fields low to ground and out front. Good actions in field. Works through baseball well. Solid accuracy with above avg. carry to bag. 77 mph arm strength.
Sam Stonskas, SS, North Scott, 2017
5-foot-7, 150-pound right-handed hitting shortstop. 7.16 runner. Short swing. Mostly good balance in box. Line drive swing plane with gap to gap approach and stays inside the baseball well. 79 mph exit velocity off tee. Short ¾ arm action. Quick release on throws. Shows athleticism and quickness. Quick twitch actions. 81 mph arm strength.
Tyler Ward, C, Ottumwa, 2018
6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher. 7.75 runner. Spread stance. Flat barrel path through hitting zone. Collapse in lower half at contact. Middle/pull approach with solid contact. 77 mph exit velocity off tee. Stiff hands occasionally receiving. Good direction to second base. Average carry on throws. Solid accuracy to bag. 73 mph arm strength. Pop times in 2.16-2.28 range.
Casey Zarr, 1B/RHP, Bondurant-Farrar, 2017
6-foot-2, 200-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.31 runner. Shows strength in swing. Translates weight well through contact. Above avg. extension through baseball. Gap to gap approach with above avg. pop in bat. 91 mph exit velocity. Shows ability to start double play. Avg. actions around bag. Fields enough for position. Short arm action with accuracy across diamond. 80 mph arm strength. High leg kick delivery. Falls back at balance point. Lands open to plate. Short 2-piece arm action from OT slot. Fastball is straight on slight downhill plane. 12/6 breaking ball with tight rotation and small break with depth. Shows heavy action and sink on changeup in bottom of zone.
